Still not sure why people think criticizing someone’s play and asking him to get better at doing certain things is the same as saying he’s never going to be able to become a franchise quarterback.
I frequently said we needed to give it until the end of the year to really get a read on him moving forward. That’s why I stopped posting in the Baker thread like 5-6 weeks ago. Why people keep bringing this up or giving me an @ saying I trashed Baker is beyond me.
He improved in every area I hoped and then some. I’m happy he’s the guy. I never actually wanted to go searching for a new QB. I only ever discussed options in the event Baker wasn’t the guy.
The point is you’re cherry-picking HOF QBs like Brees and Wilson or the handful of guys that became Pro-Bowlers to justify where Baker is at. Do some guys get through, sure, but it’d be just as easy to pull 100+ guys who were at the same stage as Baker who crapped out of the league a year later. Also, does Baker have the drive, mindset, and work ethic of Brees, Wilson, Brady, etc? I’m not really convinced of that.
I said it last week and I’ll say it again. With Baker I see a QB with no pocket presence, who can’t recognize simple defenses, doesn’t trust himself, and consistently delivers the ball late. He essentially can’t throw from the pocket as of right now. That’s not just based on the Steelers, that’s based on the season as a whole. That’s a hell of a lot to overcome at any stage in development.
I hope Baker overcomes his issues because I really don’t want to have to find another QB, but I just don’t see the progress. We can’t use Covid or the shortened offseason as an excuse either. Everyone is dealing with it and we‘ve seen other players make strides in spite of it.
Really the biggest thing that concerns me about Baker is his attitude. His reluctance to seek outside help is worrisome. The guy has a big ego which is good in some instances, but if he feels he has all the answers to his problems and doesn’t need additional help, he’s not going to get it.
It's much more like you didn't think a young 22 year old QB would improve at all.... There's way more where this came from as well.
EDIT:
Here's a real fucking doozy. You for sure weren't trashing him here... in week 12.
Baker just isn’t good. The quicker people come to terms with this the easier it’s going to be to move on.
We’ve played the 5th easiest schedule this year and through 10.5 games he hasn’t even cracked the 2000 yard mark. No matter how you slice it that’s horrible.
I’m not asking him to light the world on fire, but when you start air mailing wide open WR on a semi-regular basis it’s time to go.
