Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Still not sure why people think criticizing someone’s play and asking him to get better at doing certain things is the same as saying he’s never going to be able to become a franchise quarterback.

I frequently said we needed to give it until the end of the year to really get a read on him moving forward. That’s why I stopped posting in the Baker thread like 5-6 weeks ago. Why people keep bringing this up or giving me an @ saying I trashed Baker is beyond me.

He improved in every area I hoped and then some. I’m happy he’s the guy. I never actually wanted to go searching for a new QB. I only ever discussed options in the event Baker wasn’t the guy.
The point is you’re cherry-picking HOF QBs like Brees and Wilson or the handful of guys that became Pro-Bowlers to justify where Baker is at. Do some guys get through, sure, but it’d be just as easy to pull 100+ guys who were at the same stage as Baker who crapped out of the league a year later. Also, does Baker have the drive, mindset, and work ethic of Brees, Wilson, Brady, etc? I’m not really convinced of that.

I said it last week and I’ll say it again. With Baker I see a QB with no pocket presence, who can’t recognize simple defenses, doesn’t trust himself, and consistently delivers the ball late. He essentially can’t throw from the pocket as of right now. That’s not just based on the Steelers, that’s based on the season as a whole. That’s a hell of a lot to overcome at any stage in development.

I hope Baker overcomes his issues because I really don’t want to have to find another QB, but I just don’t see the progress. We can’t use Covid or the shortened offseason as an excuse either. Everyone is dealing with it and we‘ve seen other players make strides in spite of it.

Really the biggest thing that concerns me about Baker is his attitude. His reluctance to seek outside help is worrisome. The guy has a big ego which is good in some instances, but if he feels he has all the answers to his problems and doesn’t need additional help, he’s not going to get it.

It's much more like you didn't think a young 22 year old QB would improve at all.... There's way more where this came from as well.

EDIT:

Here's a real fucking doozy. You for sure weren't trashing him here... in week 12.

Baker just isn’t good. The quicker people come to terms with this the easier it’s going to be to move on.

We’ve played the 5th easiest schedule this year and through 10.5 games he hasn’t even cracked the 2000 yard mark. No matter how you slice it that’s horrible.

I’m not asking him to light the world on fire, but when you start air mailing wide open WR on a semi-regular basis it’s time to go.

In that first post, he doesn't make the conclusion you suggest--but it's not like that surprises anyone at this point. I'm just happy the frequency is dropping to a couple times a week instead of a couple times a day.

In that second post, I'm willing to bet @Bob_The_Cat would admit it's a bad take... right?

I love how YOU can make assumptions on the conclusions everyone is trying to reach through an internet message board but not me.

Just stop being a fucking weirdo trying to police all my posts.

I think there should be a rule on this board that anything said in a game thread is inadmissible in arguments outside of that thread.

Nobody is making assumptions. He literally does not state what you claim. This isn't a difference of opinion. This is you, repeatedly, making shit up in order to try and grandstand.

I'm so sorry you have this deep-seated issue with anyone who dares call you out on your bullshit. But, you're going to have to get over it at some point. The other option, if you don't like people calling you out for acting cunty, is to stop acting like a cunt to begin with.

Wait, you think people should be able to say "Whoops, I said that because I was heated. It was emotional and I don't actually feel that way"?

Baker is playing well and has established himself as the guy moving forward. This should make everybody happy. Spending time on old takes is a waste of time and energy.

It's so fucking bizarre:

"I just don't see the progress" and "we can't use COVID shortened season as an excuse. Well that is clearly fucking complete bullshit, because the COVID shortened season and new system clearly, CLEARLY, played and INSANELY massive role in Baker not feeling comfortable early in the season. A lot of people, including me pointed that out relentlessly and Bob brushed it off as bullshit.

Really the biggest thing that concerns me about Baker is his attitude. His reluctance to seek outside help is worrisome. The guy has a big ego which is good in some instances, but if he feels he has all the answers to his problems and doesn’t need additional help, he’s not going to get it.

Talking about Mayfield's attitude being shit, and the fact he refuses to seek outside help. Big ego. That's also fucking bullshit. He didn't need outside help, he has coaching inside our organization.

All of this is so stupid. Stop policing, and let other people defend their dogshit fucking takes and quit speaking for them when it comes to shit I write. You clearly have a vendetta you're pushing along.

Baker sucked.

Now he doesn’t.

Does this help everyone?

He didn't suck. He never sucked. His situation wasn't good, and he took a while to learn a new system in a COVID shortened season.

But you saying his ceiling was "mediocre". That, that sucked.

He still needs to work on things obviously but he sure looks like the guy.

Its funny, earlier in the season we were all like "he needs to fix x,y,z he is already in his 3rd season."

But now that he has shown so much improvement in so many areas, we are all like "he still needs to improve x,y,z, but he is only in his 3rd season" lol

Look, you can label it "policing," a "vendetta," "cringe," "butthurt," someone "having a hard on for you," or any other juvenile term you continue to resort to. It doesn't change reality.

@Bob_The_Cat never said he "didn't think a young 22 year old QB would improve at all."

The only bizarre thing is how you continue to make awful takes, false claims, and then lash out at anyone who calls them out. It's not just me dude. When are you going to realize the common thread through all of this is you?

He alluded to replacing Baker Mayfield all season "if he doesn't improve" and then in week 12 said he just flat out sucks and people should sooner realize that the better.

I mean thanks for being daddy and coming to his rescue since I guess he can't speak for himself? He needs you to do it for him and interpret what he meant by those posts?

I'll make sure to tag you in every single one of my posts going forward so you can come defend everyone against me.

Well no, you're just making up an excuse for him.

I don't really care what the excuse is, he sucked.

We all watched it, I don't need your over-the-top rendition of dancing around it.

Honestly, Baker's passing is so much different this year than it was during his first two seasons. Maybe I am just an idiot - very possible - or terrible at predicting/evaluating QBs, which is even more possible. But I really could not have imagined this transformation.
