2020-2021 Cavs Season General Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I didn't want to start a new thread, but,,,
Where Do We Go From Here.
The roster is now what it is.
Next season we will likely have 2 massive contracts in Love and Allen.
I believe Sexton will be in his contact year.
The biggest addition to the roster will likely be our draft pick. Probably pick #5-7 with the Cavs luck.
Improvement from young players on the roster should continue, but no major jump.
There are no significant unrestricted free agents likely to be attracted here.
Our most attractive trade chip might be Larry Nance Jr.
So can anybody offer a plan to make us competitive?
Ideas welcome.

Here's something I'll throw out there:
Offer our #1 pick (assume#5) and the choice of anyone on the roster for the first pick in the draft.
hopefully the scratch ticket pays out in the form of a top 2 or 3 pick.
if not, you still can find a guy in the draft (there are always guys in the draft who can be good up and down the board.. always).
Beyond that, it could be the time to make a tough call on Sexland.
The Kevin Johnson/Mark Price battle eventually netted the Cavs Larry Nance Sr via trade.
I just don't see a trade like that out there. Not sure anyone has a place for Sexton or Garland or an asset to match their value.
I'd like to see a stress on fit.

Where do we go? Dont get me wrong, I'm a big fan, but I think we have to keep trying to move Kevin Love. I'm not sure when a buyout becomes a viable option but we have to start considering this when the time arrives.

I think we have to start looking at the coaching. "Grit" is not a basketball strategy. It's something that can be relied on, and can win you some games, sure... but players need a fucking system to fall back on when the grit lapses. We shouldn't *have* to play harder than the other team all the time. Some nights it should be easy because your coaching and preparation is good.

I think we have to hit a homerun this draft, which means that whoever is responsible for the Okoro and Windler picks should be sent packing. Not that they aren't NBA quality players (although Windler is looking a little bust-tastic), and Okoro could have just as easily been Obi Toppin (ugh)... but IMO our talent evaluation absolutely has to improve. And in a hurry, because this draft is closing in fast.

Also, whoever made the call on those city jerseys needs their ass kicked.

cannot believe how people are just giving up on okoro at 19. Just do not get it. I think he will wind up to be solid NBA player. He is out of position for now. Windler was not exactly a top 10 pick
agree on the uniforms. Hideous

Hartenstein has a 1.7mil player option for next season which I assume is very likely he opts in, so he is our back up center for the next little while.
I can see him playing 10-15 mins a game while also a small boost to Wade's minutes who should be ahead of him in the rotation as a much more versatile big who has earned his playing time.
Honestly I dont know much about Hartenstein, his highlights on youtube are very basic, he has had a few big games during his time in Houston playing off Harden.

not me.. love Okoro. He's 19/20 but plays a mature game already. I think he makes a big leap over the next year and a half. He plays super smart and he's got ++ athletic ability, needs a consistent jumper. I still think Jaylen Brown level isn't out of reach.

Not giving up on him, but one or two other guys probably should have been the pick if they were looking for a 3.

Haliburton was the other choice. Those other guys aren't great.

Naw I'm fine with Okoro esp from that weak draft. I think he ultimately falls somewhere between Cavs great Bobby Phills but not quite to the Jaylen Brown level of wing player. The guy taken just ahead of Okoro, Patrick Williams, looked even more raw the other night. Deni has been playing horrible for Washington and even making some low IQ Cedi type mistakes. We can rehash Haliburton over and over but after taking Garland they were hell bent on not picking another PG..like it or not.

He's not obviously better. He's a better rebounder. I'm surprised he isn't even the better passer
No, I wouldn't say obviously better... but I think if the Wiz played him 30 minutes a night his numbers would probably be better than Okoro's. Might be wrong, but it certainly seems that way (Deni's last game notwithstanding).

His numbers should be waaay better than Okoro's adjusted by possession based on the fact he has been a pro for years. They aren't. He is supposed to have a polished game, while we expected Okoro to be Raw.

Seeing Okoro finish and hit 3's being more aggressive lately, I wouldn't trade them straight up right now.

I'm glad the Sexton hamstring injury turned out to be an actual (minor) injury and not a trade.

With this mega-draft looming where any of the top 4 spots could yield a legit franchise player, I think it makes most sense to figure out Sexland this summer. If we can draft Green, it may make sense to move Sexton. If we draft Suggs, it may make sense to move Garland. We're not winning anything this year anyway.

While the negative side of drafting BPA has been well-documented here, there is a positive side too: We have legitimate young talent that gives us great flexible and great trade assets to form a team that makes more sense when we have an actual franchise player and are ready to win.

I can understand not trusting Koby to properly manage the assets and build a winner given how he mostly botched the 2018 season. But purely based on this rebuild, and despite some of the optics, he's done really well at drafting and accumulating assets -- to me, the two most important parts of a rebuild that has not received any lottery luck yet.

I don’t think anybody is giving up him as player but a lot of people don’t see him as a solid bonafide starter for this team. The kid is young and he’ll get better but the question is at his height which is nowhere near the listed 6’6 or 6’7 reported is he the starter we need at SF. And the resounding answer is NO.

Well he was the same exact height as Jaylen Brown coming out of college although Brown is now listed at 6'-6" and Okoro as 6'-5" (they now list the heights barefoot). I think it's possible Okoro could grow another inch at his age but still don't think it's enough reason to pigeonhole the kid at this early juncture of his career. I definitely agree they need to add a big toolsy 6'-8" forward type in this next draft though.
