2020-2021 Cavs Season General Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Maybe we can still joke that Thibs is going to run guys into the ground? I'll have to check my notes.
the up side is Thibs would definitely trade a promising young player for a "know what I'm getting" vet.

Maybe there's legs to RJ after all!

After seeing a couple of interesting stats I did a little analysis of the 17 games the Cavs have played since sitting Drummond down.

Their record is 7-10.

The Cavs are 5-0 when leading at the end of the first quarter; 1-2 when tied, and 1-8 when behind.

The Cavs are 7-2 when shooting over 30% on 3's and 0-8 when shooting under 30%.

I also looked at turnovers and assists but didn't see as much of a correlation. The Cavs were 7-4 when they got 23 or more assists, 3-6 with 22 or fewer.

The Cavs lost games where they had 6, 8, and 10 turnovers and won a game where they had 26.

So when they're ahead after one quarter they win every time. It you throw out the three games that were tied after one quarter then the team that is ahead after one quarter wins 13 out of 14 times. When they shoot over 30% on 3's they win 78% of the time.

So the Cavs' winning formula is simple; start strong and win the first quarter and make at least 30% of their 3-point shots.

This is one of the most silent trade deadline in rcf... I remember the days that the site would crash during trade deadlines....
not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing?

Not really... Just reminiscing the safari days, lol
i know what you mean. i was a long time lurker before RCF required user registration. there is almost, always a big trade happening during the deadline, and the forum would just crash due to the rumors pre-deadline, and the rants and praises right after.

Someone explain to me why Lonzo Ball is being hyped so much right now.
When I see him play, I'm not impressed.Seems like a player trying to improve but nothing special.

I think it is more on a compatibility thing with Sexton, you need an oversized PG to partner with an undersized SG... kinda makes sense but we don't know if it would work unless the 2 gets together

No I was talking about national media.. talking heads saying this or that team needing a PG need to go after him.

Looking at Hartenstein's individual stats on Cleaning the Glass, which shows where he ranks in specific areas against other centers, reveals he has a couple of strong points but overall is a pretty bad player.

This is his third year in the league. His usage rate went from the 6th percentile his rookie year to the 23rd percentile last year and the 61st percentile this year. So as a rookie he just tried to stay out of the way but the last two years his confidence has grown and now he's more involved in the offense than the average center when he's in the game.

This increased involvement has resulted in a decline in productivity. Last year he was in the 97th percentile in points per shot attempt and the 93rd in effective field goal percentage. With numbers like that I suspect the only shots he took were uncontested dunks. This year the numbers are 16 and 20, respectively. He's not just taking easy shots anymore and his efficiency is way down as his usage rate goes up. His usage rate needs to go back down a bit.

He's also a turnover machine, scoring in the 3rd, 6th, and 7th percentiles in turnover rate his first three years. He's improving, but very slowly. Lots of turnovers and missed shots compared to other centers.

One thing he's good at offensively is getting fouled where he ranked in the 73rd, 79th, and 87th percentile his three years in the pros. He's a poor shooter but for some reason he gets fouled a lot. Unfortunately, he's only hitting 59.4% of his free throws this year so those fouls don't help the team much.

He's a strong offensive rebounder and getting better. He ranked in the 55th, 88th, and 94th percentile his first three years. As bad a shooter as he is and as much as he turns the ball over he shouldn't do anything on offense except rebounding.

Defensively he's pretty disruptive. In block percentage he was in the 91st, 58th, and 90th percentiles among centers. In steal percentage it was 79, 80, and 85. Lots of blocks and steals per minute played. However, he's too aggressive as he ranked 0, 6, and 3 in foul percentage. In his eagerness to block shots, steal the ball, and crash the offensive glass he's a foul machine.

Whether the coaching staff can improve his shooting percentage, teach him to reduce his turnovers, and stop fouling so much is the question. If they can get him to league average in those areas he could be a serviceable backup center, IMO.

Garland for Lonzo???
Garland and Sexton both have so much more value then the JAG's and trash that were traded today. We should all remember that before even trying to put either of our guards in the trade machine. Carter JR was taken one pick of Sexton in the draft and was just a throw in today. No team was willing to trade any real value for Lonzo. Alot of teams don't even own their picks anymore since Presti has been hoarding them. At this point the Cavs would be best served to find some way to make the Sexland pairing work by adding the right surrounding ingredients around them.

I didn't want to start a new thread, but,,,
Where Do We Go From Here.
The roster is now what it is.
Next season we will likely have 2 massive contracts in Love and Allen.
I believe Sexton will be in his contact year.
The biggest addition to the roster will likely be our draft pick. Probably pick #5-7 with the Cavs luck.
Improvement from young players on the roster should continue, but no major jump.
There are no significant unrestricted free agents likely to be attracted here.
Our most attractive trade chip might be Larry Nance Jr.
So can anybody offer a plan to make us competitive?
Ideas welcome.

Here's something I'll throw out there:
Offer our #1 pick (assume#5) and the choice of anyone on the roster for the first pick in the draft.

There is a good chance kuminga or mobley will be there. If not, kispert, barnes, williams and jalen johnson fits positions of need.

This is a deep draft and i don't see the necessity to trade up.
