2021 Minor League Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Can we please keep this thread to prospect talk?

I come in here for farm updates.

If you want to talk about shuffling the roster, there are other threads for that.

Cats isn't 100% wrong with the fact how we deal with Chang effects guys in the minors and some posters have stated maybe Chang should be back down to get everyday ABs...

Which one would you want it in? The convo went from Miller to Chang so in this case half of the convo was 100% relevant while Chang's status effects Miller, Clement etc... If we talked about Bauers vs Bradley in here would that also be irrelevant since they effect each other?

I think Espino is in a class of his own, followed by Hankins, Wolf, and Cantillo. Lenny Torres plays up into that same tier if he gets back to where he was pre-TJ.
Carlos Vargas might be joining this tier of pitchers at some point in the distant future.. perhaps toward the end of 2022. Sam Hentges may also be considered as part of this "wave" of tiered talent who is now coming into his own as perhaps as good of a lefty as the Indians have seen since Sabathia.....

...just like pitchers..

the Indians also have what can only be described as a loaded tier of middle infielders. Many of these guys will play a primary and secondary position.. some three. This grouping includes, but is not limited to Miller, Clement, Bracho Rocchio, Palacios, Tena, Martinez, Freeman, Tolentino, Sanquintin & Arias...

Tier these guys... go ahead!!

So, you don't like statistical analysis, and you ignore lack of results, in deference to so called power.

You see something in Chang that has not been there since 2017 at AA....and you claim that the Indians do, too.

I will tell you what the Indians are most likely seeing in Chang...and every action they are taking shows it.

They see an older non prospect...a warm body in a position to fill a spot on a 26 man roster, while the real prospects prepare to take over soon.

Miller isn't learning to play first base in the very near future, because the Indians are intrigued with Chang's 'power'.

And the Indians certainly don't see more potential in Chang than they do in Naylor, Gimenez, Miller, Freeman, Arias, Rocchio, and Jones...all of which play positions that Chang plays....and all are much younger.

You keep waiting for Chang's elusive power. But its gonna be a long wait, and you will have to watch for it at AAA in some other org. Chang is the definition of AAAA.

Hes here because nobody else is ready, but thats gonna change real soon.
No, actually I don't see the value in Chang either. At least the value I thought he may have has faded severely.

He's not a placeholder anymore than Amed is a place holder. They were hoping to extract some value from that potential, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen.

Who said Miller isn't learning to play 1B? I didn't say that and I don't recall anyone else posting it either, but maybe I missed it. I did say that I don't want Miller to lose his 2B skillset to fill in at 1B for 1 season. He's our 2B no later than next season and possibly shortly after the AS break.

I'm waiting for Chang's elusive power? You need to reread the 1st sentence in this paragraph.

Is it bad if I use your tidbits to sometimes help me decide on what bowman cards I should pick up

Just heard this stat from Andre Knott:
The Indians starting rotation right now had 15 starts in AAA. Total.

So the Indians move pitchers up fast.
AAA is widely populated by guys who failed to make the bigs. So not much to be gained by striking out hitters who can't hit a MLB breaking ball or MLB fastball. Only reason to have them stay there is if they have command issues to work on, and the Tribe targets college pitchers with good command already.

While the fact is true, it is also miss leading.

Bieber was only briefly in AAA due to pitching injuries/ needs on the MLB level in 2018.
Similar for Plesac and Civale in 2019 (barely a cup of coffee in AAA before MLB needs brought them up).
Some guys (McKenzie/Hentges) did not get time in AAA due to the 2020 minor league season being cancelled.

While 15 AAA starts is the number for the current group, it is also true Logan S Allen has 24 AAA starts (6 for Columbus) all by himself and Cal Quantrill has 13 AAA starts himself.

Small sample but Columbus and Akron are a combined 9-1. Things are growing down on the farm.

Edit: I just saw that Mad Thinker posted in another thread that Indians' farm teams went 18-4 the first week. Whoa.

It can't all be pitching and middle infield, right? There's got to be a couple of outfielders that are hitting somewhere.

Lynchburg pitchers:

Daniel Espino - he's going to out talent hitters for a while unless they get aggressive with his assignments. Consistent mid-90s with good run, nasty slider that he throws hard and early/behind in counts, good curveball when needed, and his change-up gets better every time I see it though it is used sparingly at the lower levels. He was overthrowing early in his 1st start, didn't exactly get hit hard when he got hit. I expect start #2 to be cleaner for him.

Josh Wolf - also sat mid-90s with his fastball consistently, not quite as much snap on his FB as Espino. Good 12-6 curve that will K a lot of lower level hitters, worked in a decent hard slider and a meh change-up. Somehow gave up a run without a ball put into play that reached the outfield grass. He's going to need his slider or change to improve as he moves up, and the Indians track record at developing off-speed stuff speaks for itself. Think there is some untapped velocity in him due to mechanics, will see if they change throughout the year.

Lenny Torres - if ever there was the stereotypical "first appearance post Tommy John" he had it. No idea where his pitches were going, but the same live arm he had before the surgery. Nasty slider, 92-94 on the gun. Going to be cautious with his workload early, especially if the weather stays cold for a bit longer, so the stats probably won't blow people away. He looked healthy though, will be exciting to see what he is doing in the middle of the summer ~10 starts in.

Xzavion Curry - been so excited to see him in an actual game. Watched 2 years of bullpens waiting to see him in real game action and he didn't disappoint. So much of what he does reminds me of Civale. Not overpowering, 90-93, moves his fastballs both directions, throws anything in any count, and has a plus breaking pitch that I think if he adds just a touch more velocity will be a plus-plus pitch. He won't be long for this level.

Sergio Morillo - one of many kids at this level that more people will have never heard of because he was stateside for all of ~20 IP 3 years ago. Mid 90s fastball, touched 98, with late arm side life, power slider, but no 3rd off speed pitch with much consistency (he has a split-change that does not much right now). He'll mow down this level with his fastball and slider alone, but another guy who needs a 3rd pitch to stick as a starter.

Those are probably the 5 notable prospects currently. Jordan Jones was impressive but is a 2 pitch guy at 23. Civale's old teammate Andrew Misiaszek looked very good as a lefty out of the pen, but Daritzon Feliz and Miguel Vinicio are the reliever prospects to watch out of this group. Feliz is a lefty that throws 95-97 with a good slider. Vinicio is a righty, 93-95, with a plus curve and plus slider.

Lynchburg hitters:

C - Yainer Diaz - his receiving, blocking, and game calling has improved noticeably. Still some fundamentals that need a lot of work, specifically his footwork when trying to throw out of the crouch. Ho-hum start with the bat, but he's the 2nd best hitting prospect at C behind Naylor. Terrific eye, gap-to-gap approach, puts the ball in play, and developing some HR pop.

1B - Jhonkensy Noel - such a simple, smooth swing that generates monster power. They have 5 of those bats in this lineup, which is hilarious at this level. He has a real old-school power hitter batting stance which I love. Drives the ball anywhere, puts the ball in play, doesn't chase many pitches. His make or break will be hitting breaking pitches at the higher levels and finding a defensive position to stick at.

1B - Will Bartlett - big, athletic kid with another simple swing that generates huge power. More strikeout in his swing than Noel, but more raw power and he can really move for a 6'4 220+ lb 1B. Wouldn't think he had just turned 20 looking at him, looks like a grown man. Lived in Goodyear once minor leaguers got the okay to use the facilities again. Same as Noel, his make or break will be breaking pitches, but I think his natural swing drives pitches the opposite way so he has a good chance to be effective vs them.

2B - Christian Cairo - 4th round pick from a few years ago that really struggled as a teenager. Has very quick hands at the plate and generates a lot of bat speed, but can get him in trouble when he is behind in counts. Good eye, aggressive swinger, and the best defensive middle infielder in the group.

2B/SS - Yordys Valdez - 2nd round pick from a few years ago, another kid who struggled his first action as a pro and was the only hitter who struggled this week. He's fundamentally sound at the plate from both sides, but chases a lot of pitches which is always concerning at the A level. Think he needs as many ABs as possible for the experience, him being able to play every position on the infield helps.

SS/2B - Angel Martinez - I love this kid. Organization was aggressive with this assignment, he had never played stateside until this week. Culture shock, language barrier, and a group of people he was 1 level behind and hasn't played with. He can flat out hit from both sides of the plate. He got a little jumpy with runners on and K'd on some pitches he normally doesn't swing at. He's starting to fill out a little but hasn't lost any speed. You can tell he'll have to adjust to the speed of the game a bit defensively, had a few errors where he relaxed on the ball and got caught by surprise. For my money, he's the best prospect on this team, including the pitchers.

3B/SS - Gabby Rodriguez - swing is as smooth as ever (he looks like a miniature JD Martinez) and man did he have some bad luck this week. Hit at least 4 right on the nose but right at someone. Like a couple of the other teenagers, he was way too aggressive after all the time off. Just needs to settle down and he should have a big year at this level. Looks good at 3B, good at SS. This is more of a learning year than a production year for him.

OF - Alexfri Planez - like Gabby Rodriguez, teenager who was swinging out of his shoes, which he doesn't need to. He generates a lot of pop with his swing to all fields with minimal effort. His size works to his disadvantage and he will K at a higher rate because of it. Recognizes pitches well and doesn't chase a lot of bad pitches. Can play all 3 OF spots as well. Like Rodriguez, when he put the ball in play everything was hit hard but right at someone the majority of the time.

OF - Johnathan Rodriguez - amazing how forgotten he has been, a 3rd round pick in 2017 as a 17 year old who is still just 21. He has a beautiful swing and great hands. Another tall, lanky OFer with a longer swing so he Ks a bit more, but he also tends to work in decent amount of BBs and has a good feel for hitting. Think he ends the season in High A.

OF - Julian Escobedo - not much of a prospect, but he can just flat out hit, albeit for not much power. He is this wave of prospects version of Andrew Calica. Table-setter for the middle of the order guys.

OF - Korey Holland - another kind of forgotten HS draft pick from a few years ago. Overhauled his mechanics and swing during the stoppage, body filled out, and he is fast as hell. Hope to see some pop come out of his bat, as his previous swing was built for line drives/groundballs and utilizing his speed. He's short and stocky, but has a lot of bat speed.

There is just a shit ton of talent here right now. It's not surprising anyone in the organization how they manhandled their first opponent.

Good stuff, thanks.

Knew about Feliz, but forgot about Morillo and didn't know Vinicio yet.
The depth is crazy. Talents like Brauny Munoz and Mike Garcia are age blocked back to AZL. One of my day 3 darlings Nic Enright needed an opening to get a chance. And there are so many injuries already to fill an entire pitching roster.

Any word on Ray Burgos? He's not on any roster on IL. Ramping up in Arizona? Marman?

And what about org depth arms like Francisco Perez and Ponticelli who seem to seize their opportunities in AA so far. Anything follow worthy there?

Is JJ Rodriguez still switch hitting? I've stayed on him despite outlets overlooking him, because he's kept hitting decently above average at every stop. If the power comes, he's a legit prospect.

Angel Martinez is one of my favs too. Had him Top 10 before the year.
Noel is quickly turning into an untouchable, not because of his performance, but because of his batted ball profile, low SwStr% and monster power is screaming HUGE upside.
Really liked the Cairo pick. He was overmatched in AZL after the draft, but I expected better results with physical maturation, much like Jose Fermin did.

You didn't mention Micah Pries. Both performance and peripherals look great. He needs tested in A+, the power/speed profile and D II background intrigues me.

Lake County hitters struggled a bit, as expected. Lots of young prospects got pushed there. Reinforcements from Lynchburg will come during the season.

Akron with more forgotten or overlooked bats in O. Gonzalez, Kwan, Palacios.

Some of those offseason decisions will be tough. I hope they trade as much as possible proactively during this season.
