2021 Minor League Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The other Logan Allen followed Gaddis with another similar start. Sits 90-91, touched 93. Throws a really good circle-change that you don't normally see from lefties and he throws it a lot. Lot of drop and fade away from righties. Mixed in a pretty good curve that he is throwing harder than he did in college. Good command, repeats his mechanics, moves pitches wherever he wants to. He will be yet another fast moving college arm in this system.

Lavastida called another good game. A highlight of his athleticism as a C, he stole his 4th base of the season already last night after beating out a single hit up the middle to the 2B. He's just a solid all-around C. Does nothing spectacular, just does everything well.

Valera was pulled as a precaution in the 4th. Aggravated something on a groundout in his 2nd AB.

Jose Tena is a solid SS prospect in system loaded solid SS prospects. Didn't have much action defensively (LC pitchers K'd 15 of the 27 outs), but he swung the bat incredibly well. Smooth swing, simple approach. If the power he showed last night sticks he bumps up a tier for me. His only downfall is he is a righty fielder, lefty hitter which this organization has had troubles developing lately.

Tough game for Naranjo, but those are going to happen as mentioned yesterday. Put up good ABs, but K'd in the end.

Ray Delgado had a nice game at the plate and at 3B. If he starts reverting back to his normal self he is yet another good MI prospect for this system to have. Switch hitter with sound mechanics from both sides of the plate, good frame to add strength/power as he matures, and can play any IF spot.

Other than that, not a lot of the "prospects that matter" got PT. The older college guys like Schneemaan, Brennan, and Wade all got the starts last night and their older relievers finished the game off after Allen.

There's a lot of young talent here in the position player pool. Things you usually never see from young groups like that in the minors is clean defense. 2 straight games I've watched them and they play exceptionally clean defense for this level. Mix that with the pitching staff and they'll win a lot of games, even with the inconsistency they're going to see from the bats.

I think I've seen ten...if I have counted correctly...position prospects with positive comments, on this thread and the other minor league thread, that are R5 eligible in December. Thats not counting the pitching prospects.

Sounds like the ML club, except for the clean defense part.

Curious to hear your take on Will Brennan. I realize all the age/level position players get the prospect love, but this is Brennan's first full season gig too after being a two way player in college. He had CLE pick written all over him with his exaggerated BB/K ratio in college. He's been very consistent so far and has a solid hit/speed mix. Will (!) he stick in CF?

Wow, do you think we ought to consider trading some of them?

Positive as prospects, sure.

But positive enough to stick on an MLB roster for an entire season? Not quite.

Never fun to leave guys unprotected, but teams are making huge mistakes if they use roster spots on these guys next year. Some of them are a long ways off.

I know what you're alluding to. Prospects like Tena, Planez, Noel, L. Torres are several years away and as a contender, you can't stash more than a couple or max handful of them on your 40.

Otoh, we've seen the trend from rebuilding teams of selecting raw kids from lower levels, even bats, so there's risk leaving them unprotected.

We are about to see an unprecedented amount of "top prospects" from the lower levels left unprotected this year leaguewide. I think how many guys who will be eligible is a valid concern, just the Indians will more than likely protect every guy with an actual chance to be taken and the pool is going to be so heavy that it won't be as bad as people think.

There will only be maybe 3 fully blown teams (Tigers, Rockies, Pirates) that could potentially offer an active roster spot to low level players and stash them on their bench/bullpen all season long, but after that you'll more than likely see picks like Stephan or Tom. AA/AAA guys who are just blocked in their current organization. On top of that, it is a rarely seen huge free agent class too.

It'll definitely be interesting to watch.

How many guys do you think we will protect/Who do you think we have to protect?

I know the Pirates aren’t going anywhere but how much longer could they hold onto Oviedo he getting torch......Clearly not ready, I know people will say the same thing about Stephan but he doing a lot better in the same amount of inning

Well I wonder if we can get a player from them for Oviedo? We have a ton of pitching and a ton of guys who are rule 5 eligible next season. If we can get a prospect with upside that isn't rule 5 eligible any time soon, I would do it probably.

I like that ideal..

I like that ideal..

That would allow the pirates to send him to the minors while we at least get something for him... But sadly this isn't OOTP, I really doubt that would happen...

Something to keep in mind: Before the Pirates/ CLE could make a deal (which allows Pirates to send Oviedo to the minors), the Pirates would need to expose Oviedo to waivers & the other 28 clubs would need to pass on selecting Oviedo.

Remember: it was the NY Mets that selected Oviedo in the R5 draft. Although the Mets dealt Oviedo to Pitts, the roster limitations were still in place.
For all we know one of the other MLB clubs is laying in the weeds & waiting for the chance to snag Oviedo on the cheap..

FWIW - I don't think Oviedo is struggling that bad all things considered.. Take a look at Quantrill's actual stats. They are as bad if not worse than Luis's. only difference is Cal has been lucky.
