2021 Minor League Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Richie Palacios getting run in CF. First of many infield prospects who will get moved to various spots around the field.
He played a fair amount of LF in college if I recollect correctly.

And kudos to @Tondo for calling this one earlier this spring.

This is the 2nd game for Bracho at 1B.
The announcers are saying Bracho is looking much better this game compared to his 1st start.

Overshadowed by Miller, Arias has "quietly" had a great offensive start in AAA (.439 OBP/155 wRC+). If Gimenez continues to struggle with the bat I could see them swapping places later in the year. Supposedly they have comparable gloves?

Edge on paper for defense was slightly to Gimenez but it wasn't enough to matter a lot. It's like saying one is a 70 and the other is an 65, both work out just fine in the end...

With the fact Gimenez and Changs playing time decreased on the road trip, something is up (either a mild injury with Gimenez) or they are making changes once they get back to Cleveland. It is past the service time thing, so if they are going to call up AAA guys like Miller, Arias etc, it would be soon...

No injury - there was a report they're working on fixing Gimenez's swing and want him to spend a few days in the cage. Apparently the Mets changed it last year to try and give him more power. The Indians want to change it back. Duh.

I just saw a video of Gilbert Arias hitting an opposite field home run. First time I've seen him and I didn't realize how buffed out he is. I assumed all Venezuelan shortstops are built like Omar Vizquel. He's listed at 6'1", 217, which is what you'd expect from an NFL running back. Is he going to stay at SS?

It looks like Arias and Owen Miller could be our middle infield starters next year. But then we have Freeman (.368/.888) and Fermin (.348/.858) at Akron. The amount of bat talent playing SS and 2B at AAA and AA right now is insane.

I especially don't think there should be a rush to call up Arias but it is interesting how many walks he has drawn so far when the red flags on his profile always were regarding his plate discipline. If he really did successfully patch up that issue it would seem almost miraculous with how quickly he was able to do it. I just don't think there's enough room at the moment for both and Miller seems to be getting trained for some kind of "super-utility" role (he has already played all IF positions in AAA).

My guess is that Miller would take Chang's role but with close to every day playing time shuffling him around the diamond and Arias gets the call when they're ready to plant him at SS every day. Arias does seem like a very high ceiling guy with an already great glove, some pop, and some hitting issues which he may have already significantly addressed. Given his potential he should never be warming a bench anywhere.

We have a surplus of middle infield talent, but that's not a terrible thing because we can always trade in the pieces that we don't have a spot for. I feel the organization is moving Miller away from middle infield primarily because of this with Freeman likely to be a contender for every day 2B next year and it'll hard to imagine both Arias and Gimenez being busts and even if they are there's options (assuming Rocchio is on more of a 2023 pathway). It'll be interesting to see what happens with Cesar though who has a $6M 2022 option which in a vacuum probably wouldn't make sense to pick up but for other teams it may, giving him some trade value. I could see flipping Cesar mid-season to some team who needs him, opening the door.

So it actually wouldnt be out of the question if Gimenez ended up back in AAA for a short stint for everyday ABs while we call up Miller/Johnson to take his place in a sense...

I said Arias is closer to a Correa while Gimenez is closer to a Vizquel. Hence why I felt he could be at 3B if we don't keep JRam... I haven't seen any scouting report say he cannot stay at SS at all. It's gonna be more of, if Gimenez is hitting at a solid clip, whomever is the better fielder will end up at SS and the other at 3B on paper.

Freeman should end up at 2B... Hence why at one point I predicted Miller at 1B. So it's going to be a fun time with so many MIF and likely some that could be traded..

G. Arias is probably our top prospect right now, in a group with Espino, Freeman, Rocchio, Valera, A. Martinez and Miller.

Jones and Naylor K way too much for my liking, can't be explained away by age/level, but there's more hope/time with Naylor.

Tena, L. Allen, Burns, Noel, Lavastida, Bartlett, Cairo, Melendez, J. Rodriguez pushing up the rankings.

Y. Valdes, Planez and G. Rodriguez proving to be the suspects I feared they'd be.

Arias appears to have taken criticism/instruction to heart. Very encouraging.

Naylor and Planez off to very cold starts. Have faith Naylor is going through a cold spell, he looked pretty good this spring.

Dark risers - Pries and the forgotten J.Rodriguez. If Fermin keeps hitting like this, he is another one. Oscar Gonzalez who seems like he has been around forever is still only 23 and popping them over the fence at a rate he has never done before..

And of course Will Benson, who's current OBP is over .400. Maybe he turns into an Adam Dunn-lite with wheels or Mike Cameron?

No minors games for me this week or the next. But I have some Lake County items coming from this past week, so bear with me.
I do not know if it is part of the coming report from Bimbo (perhaps Bimbo can confirm it or communicate the correction), but I heard something re: George Valera.

According to Jeff Ellis (Locked On Indians Podcast, 5/17/21 episode) Valera is dealing with an oblique issue.

Only sharing what I heard (and the where/ from whom)..

He is. Him and Lavastida both tweaked something on throws. Valera labored a throw in from the OF, stayed in, hit a weak grounder the following half-inning and was pulled.

Shouldn't be anything too serious.

What do we think Gabriel Arias ceiling ND floor are?
