2021 Series #18 | Indians @ Orioles | June 4-6, 2021

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
We talk a ton about our offense but we're carrying around Nelson, Maton, Quantrill, Hentges, Stephan, Parker, etc. Our top bullpen arms are pretty good but once we get past that it's kind of sad. Quantrill, Hentges, and Stephan have live arms but haven't figured out what to do with them yet. The problem is the pitching depth isn't really depth and is just AAA players. And on top of that we DFA'd Oliver Perez for no real good reason as far as I know.

I do hope we at least looked into Kazmir because right now we have 2 SP, and while Karinchak and Clase have generally been good and Sandlin and Wittgren and Mejia at last look like MLBers the rest are very questionable. Not really a great situation when some of them have to start now.

What a clown show. The defense is horrible, especially on the mound. Quantrill spikes an easy force out at home and Hentges can't figure out where first base is just like Mejia the day before. Pop-ups are dropping all over the place. Runners coming home from third on plays at first base. Outfielders overthrowing cut-off men allowing runners to move up. Even Manning commented on the shoddy play, saying the Indians needed to go back to Fundementals 101.
Quantrill showed he belongs in the bullpen. Hentges proved he belongs in the minors; nine hits in under two innings. Let's go with McKenzie and Mejia as the 4th and 5th starters and pray they are decent.

The pitching was horrid - all those hits on 0-2 pitches. What a joke. At least Stephan looked good. He was throwing 98 and 99 with a nice slider to go along with it. He probably has a lot more development to get to where he's going but obviously there's a huge arm to work with. He throws harder than anybody except Clase. No way the Yankees are getting this Rule 5 pick back.

Well, we finally got Mullins out - on a line drive. What an amazing series he had - nine hits, a couple of walks, and a spectacular diving catch in center. I can't remember an opposing player having this good a series against the Indians. Maybe Miggy in his prime, but even then I don't think he ever had nine hits including three homers and a double.

When Mullins tried to stretch that double into a triple I'll bet he was thinking about hitting for the cycle. He already had the single and home run.

The silver lining is the hitting of Bobby Bradley, who went 4-for-5 with a home run and two doubles, using both right and left fields. By my count Bradley swung at 10 pitches the last two games and only missed one - the first one. His problem has been strikeouts but he was definitely making contact this weekend. I don't want to go overboard on five at-bats but man did he look good. If Bradley is the answer to our first base problem then this was a successful weekend.

In 2019 Bradley struck out 20 times in 45 at-bats. For him to take ten swings and make contact on nine of them is pretty exciting. Even the one time they got him out was on a hard hit ground ball. The oppo home run off a lefty may have been his most impressive swing of series.

Time to bring McKenzie back and get Mejia stretched out.
What’s really shocking is giving up 18 runs while Mancini was hitless. Now that’s embarrassing.

In the second inning with the score 1-0 Quantrill had one out and runners on first and second with the #8 and #9 hitters coming up. He needed to attack both of them because Mullens was up after them and the last thing we needed was Mullens up with men on base. At that point he had seven hits in a row.

So Quantrill goes to a 3-2 count on the #8 hitter and hits him with a fastball. Unbelievable. But the #9 hitter was 0-for-8 on the season so a double play still gets Quantrill out of the inning trailing 1-0. He gets ahead 0-2 and then throws three straight pitches right down the middle. The first two are fouled off and the third is a single to center and it's 2-0 O's with the top of the order coming up.

Quantrill has been very good this year with RISP but not today.

Probably shouldn’t be any surprise but I totally believe there going to be some player movements tomorrow, Hentges, for sure and probably Owens who’s, clearly not ready , and maybe Nelson.....We should see

Didn't get to watch the game. Working nights this weekend and my son had a double header so I caught as much of his games as I could.

Clearly it was a terrible game having given up 18 runs. That just doesn't happen very often and every team is susceptible to it. All you can do is chalk it up to a bad day.

On the brighter side of things, it's good to see BB get off to a good start. Clearly he won't or can't keep this pace up, but it certainly appears that he will be an upgrade. Even if he strikes out at a 30% clip in the end he can be a productive bat with that power. It may not be ideal, but it's an improvement over what we had.

All in all the bats are starting to wake up a bit. Be nice to have a C that could hit and play D though.

2.30 WHIP for Hentges. That's pretty miraculous. Hitters are feasting on his fastball

I know Zimmer look bad yesterday, but I would like to give him the Owens treatment and give him , straight 5 to 6 game start and CF and see how determine he’s about trying to stick with the big club, at minimal his defense would be a major improvement......

It was a 3 team deal but yes, the tribe traded Diaz for Bauers. The Indians also pocketed money, I'm thinking 5 million or so.
You’re leaving out the key part of the deal, which was Encarnacion and cash for Santana. The Indians received cash and Bauers from Tampa for Diaz, and then traded that cash and Encarnacion to Seattle for Santana. The trade was never about Bauers and always about getting out from Encarnacion’s contract/upgrading 1B with Santana. Diaz was blocked here and became the asset that helped the trade go through. Bauers was essentially a throw in who needed to play LF (which Diaz wouldn’t/couldn’t) in order to even get a shot here initially.

Who replaces them in your opinion Cliff?

Good question making that statement without looking at the 40 man roster, when I did look at it, it was pretty scares, especially the pitching......I could see Clement for Owens who’s is clearly pressing......

Who the fuck is "Owens"?
