2021 Series #18 | Indians @ Orioles | June 4-6, 2021

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Andres Gimenez has a higher slugging percentage than Yandy Diaz this year

He's a good player and got screwed while in Cleveland, but I don't understand why so many people are losing sleep over that trade. We got Santana's best season of his career in 19
Diaz has yet to play 80 games in a single season, and will be 30 years old before the 2021 season is over. Besides 2019, his total number of home runs is 4 in 177 games. If he was on this team right now, a good chunk of the posters here would be bitching about his lack of production.

Yandy Diaz has a .382 OBP% so having him lead off, I think would have taken some pressure off of Hernandez and whatnot to get on base. Plus he is batting .368 with runners in scoring position. I don't think we would be complaining too much about that compared to Bauers...

After taking a deep breath...

Sundays game was a bad as it gets, and its difficult to find a turning point in a 15 run drubbing, but...

In the second inning, with one run in and the bases loaded, Harold allowed a shallow fly ball to drop in front of him that allowed a run to score. That play was routine for even an average CF. Quantrill then botched another routine play, which opened the flood gates.

In our next at bat, Bradley doubled in a run. At that point the score should have been 2-1, instead of 7-1.

Quantrill, while very shaky, would have been around for the third inning, and the game thread would have had posts talking about how he limited the damage by getting a pop up and ground ball to the mound to end the inning.

Yes, the pitching sucked and the lack of defensive fundamentals continued after the game became a route, but we can't win by continuing to put players in the field who are incapable of playing the position they are put in.

Harold is a left fielder, if there is a position he can play. Eddie is a left fielder. If Naylor is not at first, he is a left fielder.

First things first. We need solid defense that can provide support for our young pitchers. Without it, no amount of improved offense is gonna help much.

We need to bring back Gimenez and play him every day at short. Tell him, 'Kid, don't worry about the bat, just play D.' We need to put Amed in center every day. We need to put Naylor at first every day. We need to ride Bradley while he is hot at DH. We need to play some combination of Harold/Zimmer/Luplow (when he returns) in right.

If we want to platoon Bradley at DH, use Harold. Anybody not okay with Harold instead of Chang?

Maybe we can't have both offense and defense at the same time, but its time to make a choice...and with our young pitchers learning on the job, the choice every day should be defense.

I would make the Encarcion-Diaz-Santana-Bauers trade again....even though many choose to forget that it wasnt Diaz for Bauers.

We got out from under the $22 mil we owed Eddie. We got a Silver Slugger 1B that we had to pay $4 mil less, and we got an additional $4 mil to help pay that. And we got a top 100 prospect. All for a kid that played a position which we already had filled by maybe the best in baseball, whose second position was played by a Silver Slugger who could also play defense.

But for a moment, forget the most important part of that trade and focus on Diaz for Bauers.

Bauers was rated as the 45th prospect by BA in 2018, exactly the same spot as Nolan Jones today. Bauers had a FV of 50, exactly the same as Jones.

If Yandy is so good, would you trade Jones and $4 mil for him right now?

Or look at it a different way...

Josh Naylor was rated 99th by BA with a FV of 45. So far in somewhat less than 600 MLB PAs, he has a .692 OPS with an 87 OPS+. At the time we got him, Bauers had a .700 OPS and 92 OPS+ in just under 400 PAs.

Would you trade Naylor and $4 mil for Yandy today?

Let's also not forget that half of those HR's in 2019 came in the first month of the season.

Revisiting Owen Miller's stats with Columbus to start the year, the warning signs were there with a .500 BABIP and 50% ground ball rate in 70 plate appearances

Not overly concerned with his prospects going forward, it seems like rookies are especially struggling to start the season this year.

Boy have tides changed quickly in here.

It was just a couple weeks ago I was getting lit up by a certain someone for saying something positive like "Owen is likely a better player than Chang" instead of worshipping him as a deity.

:chuckle:

I think you're spot-on here. Miller isn't going to hit .400. He also isn't going to be the worst batter in baseball. He's still a 2B/utility contender moving forward and I'd still be fine with trading away Cesar and letting Owen play every day at 2B (I believe Owen is worse than Cesar right now, but I don't think Cesar is going to be here for our next contention window).

Miller I think needs to go back to the minors personally and it's more of the, you got your feet wet, so work on the issues you saw, so you can improve for the next time you get a shot. I feel like he's gotten away from what made him good in the minors and needs to get back to it.

Bradley already got his feet wet in the pros. This is his time to prove he belongs here at the end of the day. Yesterday was a good start for him, so I hope he keeps it up. A slash around .240/.310/.480 is the best I ever expect him from so I hope he can do that plus more honestly...

I generally agree with that, just don't know who will take his spot really. I'd argue Gimenez is still doing that and Clement has been struggling. I guess if Luplow will be back soon then we can just wait for that but I don't know if that's even the case.

If Bradley ever turns into a true talent .240 hitter I'll be shocked.

IMO - I don't see much value sending Miller back down. Just keeping plugging him in for now. Now if you feel Gimenez is ready to return, then OK do it. I however do not feel he is and rather have him work on his game down there.

It makes a lot more sense (to me) for Miller to work it out at the ML and for Gimenez to work it out in AAA.

I see that the Mariners sent Kelenic back to AAA ball after he was mired in a 0-39 slump.. Kelenic is the #3 rated prospect in all of MLB. So no shame in sending Miller back to Columbus.

It makes all kinds of sense to put Gimenez at short, Amed in center, Harold in right (gotta keep Eddie in left), Naylor at first, and Bradley at DH. Miller is the odd man out so you basically replace Miller's bat with Gimenez (probably an improvement, at worst a wash) while improving three positions defensively. When Reyes gets back we'll figure out who gets benched, possibly Naylor, who's puttering along at .251/.693 and on pace for less than 50 RBI's, not what you need from a corner OF.

Zimmer is also out but he's 5-for-22 since coming up, all singles, so he needs to go, especially after swinging and missing seven times in nine swings Sunday.

Luplow can platoon with Bradley at DH or better yet put him in right field against lefties and Harold becomes the DH.

That's just service time manipulation with Kelenic, his agent needs to sue.

The dude is 8-83. Austin Hedges looks like Rod Carew compared to him right now. Would you be happy with the Tribe keeping a guy like that in the lineup regardless of his prospect ranking?
