Denzel Valentine: Get lost

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
A GM should always be seeking to improve the talent on his team; with a focus on the team becoming a team that can win more and more. The end of the roster shouldn't be throw-away spots, but lottery tickets (developmental, vet culture guys, single-skill guys, etc). Valentine is none of those.

Guys they could've gone after instead: Svi, Servydas, James Ennis, Hutchison, Mathews, Gerald Green, etc.

Svi - Team showed interest he didn't want to come here.
Servydas - Has shown nothing in the NBA for Pistons and sucked in SL for Pistons.
James Ennis - Is likely waiting for a end of the bench spot on a contender he's old now.
Chandler Hutchison - Is same as Denzel Valentine. He's not developmental. He's not a vet culture guy. He has no skills.
Garrison Mathews - Cavaliers have shown interest but Mathews may not want to come here per reports.
Gerald Green - Really?

Yeah I don't disagree that we shouldn't waste roaster spots but all those guys are worthless too. And how do you know any vet would want to come to Cleveland? We aren't exactly a destination location or situation. Come on.

At least one of those guys is still unsigned, by 29 other NBA teams...I don't think you are going to find any needles in the haystack. It's why I like the signing of Pangos, we at least know he doesn't already suck in the NBA so that's something.

And by all accounts Rubio is about as good of a vet leader you could ask for and we made a decent investment in him.

Shit people were complaining about Prince on the wing. You think we are going to get anyone half as good as him?

Agree...I guess you can criticize Koby for not prioritizing wing players, but there has been a strong lack of actual suggestions as to who he could have gotten. Every team in the league wants 2-way wing players. And no one has criticized his draft picks in a vacuum.

Also, best case scenario is that one or more of these things happen: Windler has a redemption year, Okoro continues to mature and proves capable of being a 3, and Cedi goes back to high 30's in 3pt percentage.

I would rather any one of those things happen (and giving the guys the chance to make it happen) than signing a guy who might give us 8ppg instead of 6ppg.

Not to mention Lauri probably getting minutes at the 3, Llamar being an adequate 3-4 guy for depth, maybe even Mobley getting time at the 3. Or fuck it stick Tacko there.
Okoro will never be a capable wing player at 6’4 or 6’5 (whatever he is….he’s not 6’6)

I don't think we have any intention of keeping Rubio or even playing him. If we did, you wouldve expected Altman or JBB to reach out to him by now.

All of the guys I listed are absolutely end of the bench/questionable. The difference is, they're all sized appropriately for the position we need the most help at.

If you need something and are dumpster diving, at least pick the thing that most closely resembles what you need, not something thats trash *and* not what you need.

Slow down there, tiger. Where did you read the front office hasn't reached out to Rubio?

Rubio said 95% all the right things in a recent interview, but did admit he thought he would be playing for more of a contender at this stage of his career.

That's a vastly different thing.

He said he is excited to see what his role in Cleveland will be. That sort of implies he hasn't been told what his role will be.

Koby really shouldn't be relying on free agency to get better with wings. Even getting a wing via trade seems like its going to cost us alot.

When Koby has been sitting on as many future second round picks as he has, that's where I point to how he should be attempting to get better. He could have used some of those future second round picks to move into this year's or last year's draft. That's where he could have possibly found talent to grow in the same window as the rest of our core.

The draft where we brought in Garland, KPJ, and Windler should have been the norm of this team for draft strategy not the outlier. Maybe we don't get two players in the back end of the 1st round but attempting to find talent in the second round would have helped.

I see a big jump there.

He may not want to tell the media exactly how he will be used and is biting his tongue. He is a guy in his prime surrounded by very young guards who haven't won much as pros.

I’m not expecting him to bring any veteran influence, and I pray he rarely sees the floor.

At best, he’s just one less guy our coaches have to worry about teaching the ins and outs of the NBA to.
But why give him guaranteed money?

I have never seen a player so resoundingly shit-canned here as Valentine has been. Even Anthony Bennett was given a lukewarm welcome compared to this. Love is given chance after chance.

What we know about Valentine is this. He had an extraordinary college career. His professional career blows. But he has had injuries, and missed a ton of time.
Word is now he's healthy. His competition on the Cavs is minimal. Can we at least see what he can bring to a new organization?
Or should we just boo when he is introduced?
I’m tired of the team either acquiring short wing players, or ignoring wings altogether. Okoro was supposed to be a 3; he’s 6’5” in shoes. Valentine is even shorter. If there aren’t any wings with size available as FAs, then trade for one. At least don’t trade any AWAY. Our 1970s roster isn’t winning more than 20 games, and it’s an insult to the fans.

The very same article mentions that he hasn't really spoke with JBB in length at all. So I don't see it is as that big of a jump.

I see your perspective. I have to admit, I don't want to believe what you are saying. It's so counter-intuitive to trade for Rubio - an extension of the coach wherever he has played - and then not create that bridge.

Here's my ranking of the Cavs off-season:

1. Draft Mobley, didn't get cute.
2. Trade for Rubio.
3. Ummm...
4. Resigning Jarrett Allen was actually cool.
5. Uhhhh...
6. I heard Len Komoroski received some recognition for business leadership.

Everything else is pretty far down on the list.
