Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Barring a trade for Rodgers or Wilson, though, I'd imagine Baker is going to get one more year to prove whether or not he belongs as a starting QB.
I know i will get laughed at for this take, but i still think the browns explore an extension with Baker at the end of the year. However the Browns are going to be offering nothing i would not expect Baker to take. We are talking 25/year with easy team outs, though heavily loaded with incentives. Like i said i doubt Baker would take it so its not really worth us talking about it. However I dont think the browns would simply just let this go through next year without an attempt.

Also this is under the assumption Baker doesnt do shit for the final 6 games. Baker shows up an helps lead this team to the playoffs all predictions are off

I believe this is 100% factual.

If the team makes the playoffs, he gets his. It’s unfortunate but they’ll do it.

They will absolutely look for a team friendly deal versus play the tag game.

If the team gets to the playoffs this year with Baker starting (and finishing) all remaining games surely he merits a deal? Or are we now of the opinion that he should simply be replaced by whoever we can get?

If they win games and he played like he did against Detroit (ie, winning in spite of, not because of), then I don't see an extension. If he plays like he did against Cincinnati for the rest of the year, I still have doubts he gets a lucrative extension, but I think it's more likely.

Don't sleep on Denver when it comes to Russ. They are more enticing if you ask me. Young WR core locked up.
There’s another team where he would fit really well…

With people throwing the low ball offers out there for Russ, would your opinion change if Pittsburgh was a serious contender for him? Because Russ on the Yinzers is probably good game on the division for a while

I was one of those arguing that it doesn’t make sense to boo your own player if they are giving the effort but not playing well.

Baker’s comment today - NOT in the “heat of battle” but after he’s had time to consider how to address this - is completely indefensible and, unfortunately, justifies any boos he gets from the fans. An NFL QB can’t come off like a bitch. This is just pathetic.

He did much better earlier this year when he said he had a “piss-poor performance.” He needs to either acknowledge that his play needs to get better or just shut up. Feuding with the fans is childish and is not a good look.
Yeah I usually defend Baker around these parts, but he came off as a complete douchebag in his press conference today. I encourage you all to watch it. The media scrum there was bending over backwards trying to be nice to Baker and give him the benefit of the doubt for yesterday, and then he was a complete dick in return.

I don’t know what’s going on with him right now, but he definitely doesn’t seem like he’s in a good place mentally.

ETA: And this is what he was like after he had 24 hours to cool off :chuckle:

I think we riot if Russ gets sent to Shitsburgh.

In fairness this was after a devastating loss. Oh wait …

Is this is the new "best Browns QB in the last 20 years"?

I still believe there is an avenue to Baker being here long term but it isn't on the backs of playing like dog piss and having the rest of the team hang on for dear life. He needs to play considerably better for there not to be significant exploration in replacing him IMO.

I'd much rather see Baker play similar to the end of last year and miss the playoffs, than I would watch our team drag his corpse around for 6-7 more weeks and sneak in.

I agree with you.

Whatever the amount is the Browns would be willing to extend Mayfield at, he won't be willing to sign for.

eh? How Baker plays is more important than whether or not we make the playoffs???

Oh HELL no.

1st round picks are not the only way to improve the team. Chubb, Hunt, Landry were all outside of 1st round.

Sure, but first round picks give you that fifth year option, which means you get one more year before you have to give a guy a big payday. There's a reason they're so valuable.

You can definitely find value on day two, and even day three if you're good/lucky, but first round picks essentially have a fifty/fifty hit rate and it drops off a cliff after that. Sacrificing three years of firsts to trade for one guy, even someone as talented as Russell Wilson, makes it very difficult to consistently add top-tier talent around him. That's doubly true when you consider that trading for Russ will almost certainly come with a big-money extension that would hamper the team's ability to add significant pieces in free agency.

Wasn't this supposed to be the year to determine that?
Ideally yes, but we don’t have to pay Baker until after next year. Even then we can franchise him if we need him as a stopgap to get something better. Let’s just hope he balls out next year so we can be done with it.
