I like Rubio a lot but we didn’t lose an all-NBA guy. Levert can probably be acquired. We are chasing a skill set for this year to make a little noise in the playoffs.

Simmons turns the roster on its head. We aren’t trying to win it all this year, realistically. Before or after this injury. Seems drastic imo.

LOL, okay.

I absolutely don't think we should be trading any prized assets for Simmons -- but I do think the Rubio injury changes the calculation a little.

We suddenly have a lot of minutes for somebody who sort of matches Simmons game (strong defense, good distributor with suspect shooting). Obviously Rubio is a better shooter than Simmons, but he isn't in any way a spacer.

This gives us a chance to have a trial period with Simmons now (if we can get him at the right price) and then try to trade him again later if it doesn't work out. Simmons value has pretty much cratered at the moment - if we can get him at a discount we might be able to extract all the benefits if it ends up working out, while taking very little risk long term if we end up having to trade him come the offseason.

Very little risk? He’s got a max contract for three seasons after this one. This is one of the worst contracts in the NBA.

Also, Rubio is a decent shooter. Simmons does not shoot from over ten feet and stinks at the free throw line.

It is not one of the worst contracts in the NBA - Morey wants a kings ransom and has backed himself into a corner.

But a bad contract is a contract that nobody would want to take on for free. There are 20 teams in the league that would take that contract if they didn't have to trade anything to get him.

Wow ,some of the trade ideas in here remind me of the old trade deadline explosions that posters just throw out.
While this team has a big problem right now, they have been playing well together. I don't want to see that broken up. Not for Simmons.

Right.

The hatred of Simmons by many members here has led to some interesting takes, which I understand. But Simmons very clearly isn’t anywhere close to the worst contract in the league.

He’s still an elite defender, can get wherever he wants on the court with the ball, and can finish around the rim strong. He has a very useful skill set.

He’s also heard all the same criticism about his game as the rest of us. The stigmas about his game and personality won’t be easy to shed, but I know I’m intrigued to see how his storyline plays out.

For me, he’s not my top option of targets, but if Koby pulls the trigger, I have faith in him that he’s done his intel and believes Simmons can recover in new surroundings.

Simmons isn't the worst deal, agreed. He's not a good fit for the Cavs though. Cavs need all focus on Mobley/Garland/Allen and _____ the guy who fits the _____ w/those 3 is the guy you are looking for. That guy is a shooter who can create in isolation from time to time. Markk is doing an OK job as a stand-in, but you probably need more consistent shooting, and Okoro isn't there yet.

Lmaoo this is why I don't take the opinions of armchair Gm's on this site seriously anymore. How could an perennial 1st team all defense player and arguably the best perimeter defender in the NBA and a top 5 playmaker who's only 25 years old be the worst contract in the league?? :celb (13):

No, there aren’t. There are more than 10 teams that don’t have cap space for him. They’d have to trade big contracts to get him, and for some teams that makes no sense. For example, would the Lakers trade one of their big 3 for him?

Also, I wouldn’t take him for free. If we added him to our team how can we afford Garland and Mobley down the road? Simmons sucks up a max slot and he doesnt fit our team in any way, shape or form.

At this point Morey will be lucky to get what we got for Kyrie.

Simmons isn’t just a skill set in a vacuum. He is a head case who has shown the willingness to blow up his team, refuse to play, refuse to work on the flaws in his game, and in general act as a destructive force to a good team that showed him all kinds of loyalty. Can’t believe people here want to give a max to a ticking time bomb like that.

Also, he is untradeable- have people not been watching the Sixers try and fail to trade him for months now? So he’s a huge risk in that sense too. You get him, you’re not getting rid of him.

For Westbrook????! Have you checked social media lately? Lakers fans will drive him to the airport for Ben Simmons :celb (13):

He will get less than what we got for Kyrie -- for sure.

Obviously, when I said 20 teams would take him - I was disregarding the specific year to year salary cap issues that most teams would have taking a max player on during the midseason. By that metric, only about 10 teams would be "willing" to take Giannis on right now -- so it's a dumb way to evaluate things.

Won’t shoot past 7 feet, can’t play in critical playoff games, refuses to meet with teammates, acts out in practice, expects to get paid for not playing, won’t be held accountable for his shit, makes up bullshit mental health problems when it’s convenient. He has fatal flaws that wreck his talents. I’m quite willing to die on this hill because I live in Philly, I’ve seen his act up close and this guy is an expensive pain in the ass.

Yeah, and LeBron would be thrilled to have Ben’s shooting and spacing for the next 3 2/3 seasons. Actually I’d love to see Simmons for Westbrook to completely frustrate LeBron.
