2021 College Football Season/Playoff Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Not sure the hate. They are clearly the best 2 teams in the country. You dont want a SEC championship repeat? Be better
Woke up tired and hungover when I made my snide comment. It is what it is. They are both really good teams and as several of you have noted, seemingly the best two teams. I am just not that interested in watching the game, so I won't. :)

But if it was a repeat of lets say OSU/Mich most on here wouldnt care. They have been clearly the best teams this year and i am all for UGA to beat Alabama who seem to win every year.

Oh totally. I'd be all over that game! :chuckle: I definitely would like UGA to get the win. Prefer the underdog generally.

If we're throwing out our preferred CFP expansions, here's 2 of mine:

The first one is my favorite, but can't see them implementing anything like it anytime soon

16 teams. All 10 conference champs get auto bids, just like the basketball tournament. 6 at larges. I would think, in most years, the #13-16 seeds would be the champs from the MWC/MAC/SB/CUSA, so there still is a an impetus for a top 4 seed. First round on campus, then probably neutral sites/bowl sites for last 7 games.

I am guessing to make this feasible at all, you'd need to shorten the regular season and push Championship weekend to Thanksgiving weekend. Taking away a home game is probably a non-starter. But I like the idea that a) every teams has a path to the playoff, just win your conference b) In most years, you have 12 power 5 teams in, so anyone who's good enough to win it all is probably in the CFP and c) Finishing in the top 4 probably means a much easier first game, so it's still important.

Second proposal, which I think is more likely

12 teams. Power 5 and top rated Group 5 champ get in (I'd be fine if they guaranteed 2 spots for Group 5 teams). 6 at larges. Top 4 get byes. First 2 rounds are on campus, and I'd probably re-seed after the first round (and I would buy re-seeding after the second round). Accomplishes much of the same of the first proposal, although limits Group 5 access.

He's not coaching today, and hopefully he has nothing to do with this performance. 350 yards passing for Jack freaking Coan at halftime... woof
Even if we was full coaching this game, I wouldn't care.

Okie State's D improved pretty drastically as soon as he came one. I wouldn't let 1 bad game undo 4 years of data.

I can't speak for most, but heading into the 2006 game, I was against a rematch.

For a 2 or 4 team playoff, 2 teams edit: who played each other is dumb.

Look how boring both semi-final games were though. The only team this year that compete with eachother are Alabama and UGA. It is what it is.

I havent figured out yet if NIL will help or hurt competitiveness. Texas for example hasnt been shit, but they are paying their OL 50k each. Should help them get the top OL in country, so maybe they factor in in a few years?

We will see. Should be a 8 game playoff. No byes, just the 5 conference winners and 3 at large.

No, hes saying the guys before Hurts (or as I said pre Hurts) were mediocre. Now that Bama is developing NFL QBs better than anyone, they are even scarier.
This is correct.

That's a robust sample size of .... 2 games.

One of Bama or UGA will be champ. That doesn't mean they are 'clearly' the best 2 teams.

Which team, Alabama or Georgia, would you have withheld from this year’s 4-team playoff and in favor of which other team?

Georgia and Purdue because I dont care they were the best 2 teams clearly this year, I want to see my Bolers in no matter what.

Then just give Alabama the trophy now. Or have Alabama’s starters play the backups. :chuckle:

Cincy didn’t give them a game. Neither would Michigan or Iowa or Ohio State or Oklahoma or Baylor or Clemson or Notre Dame.

A&M got them, Auburn, UF, LSU came close…. Georgia could fair better this go around…

I’m just not sure who qualified for the playoffs would give them a game other than Georgia ?? (Cincy got waxed and Michigan got outclassed by a team that couldn’t hang with them a month ago).

Even if you removed Georgia and inserted a team that didn’t make the playoffs —who would give them a game…

I don’t care who wins… I just want a close, competitive game…

It is embarrassing tho how even the 2nd or 3rd best teams in that conference is better than all the other teams across the country

Georgia's front seven is absurd. They have a chance against Alabama and could certainly win. OSU is the only other team with the offense that could beat Georgia (by getting the ball outside), but of course we got waxed and our defense wasn't good this year. Michigan would have fared much better against anyone else but Georgia, who has that front 7. They showed that Michigan won "offensive line of the year" and Georgia just completely dominated them.

I don't think the SEC is very deep year in and year out, but their top 2 is the best top 2 this year, and I think Pip is right - these are the best teams and if you don't like that, then knock them off the throne.

I mean, if I’m being truthful, I have a bigger playoff so it’s not an issue. If we’re only gonna allow 4 teams, don’t have a rematch. It’s why I was against ND making last year, too.

I would’ve been fine with Baylor. I think Georgia is “better” than Baylor, but I also think a couple teams are “better” than Cincy that had no shot. I honestly think ND was more deserving, but same I don’t think a rematch in the playoff should happen. Underlies how stupid the process has become.

I’ll repeat that thinking we know who is best is foolish. Expand it.

Definitely a rational position, and one which I very much hope proves to be correct. I confess I'm just a bit down on the program in general, probably irrationally. Losing to Michigan and being a fan of the Cleveland Browns during the pandemic is just bad for ones' mental health lol.

I’m fine expanding the playoff, but that’s not the argument being made. Why is having two teams from the same conference and/or a potential rematch a deal breaker for you when it comes to the 4-team playoff?

It’s silly to think that two of the four best teams in the country can’t be from the same conference or have previously played each other. Also, would it be better in your eyes for a team like UGA to lose to a team outside of the Top 4? UGA’s sole loss coming to Alabama in the conference championship shouldn’t be a bad thing when they clearly looked like the best team in the country up until that game.

I don’t like the SEC as much as the next guy, but it’s pretty clear this year that Alabama and UGA are above the rest of the competition. Yesterday’s outcomes further proved the point.
