Fuck all this debating. Some fun games right now. Iowa-Kentucky and Okie State-Notre Dame are both very enjoyable.
We don’t “clearly” know anything. I hate that people think we we know stuff “clearly” based on a handful of games.I’m fine expanding the playoff, but that’s not the argument being made. Why is having two teams from the same conference and/or a potential rematch a deal breaker for you when it comes to the 4-team playoff?
It’s silly to think that two of the four best teams in the country can’t be from the same conference or have previously played each other. Also, would it be better in your eyes for a team like UGA to lose to a team outside of the Top 4? UGA’s sole loss coming to Alabama in the conference championship shouldn’t be a bad thing when they clearly looked like the best team in the country up until that game.
I don’t like the SEC as much as the next guy, but it’s pretty clear this year that Alabama and UGA are above the rest of the competition. Yesterday’s outcomes further proved the point.

And this isn’t about conferences. We’ve only had one time where 2 teams played each other in the regular season and both made the playoff, and that was last years very unique situation.
2017 having 2 teams from the sec made more sense because Georgia and Bama never played.
Like, if Georgia wins by 1 after Bama beat them soundly, are we supposed to believe a Georgia is “better”?
Yeah, I changed that back I the original post. Easy to mix up “played each other” vs “same conference”. 2017 in the sec was a unique year where the 2 beat resumes didn’t end up playing each other . I think that’s a lot easier to stomach. This is about conferences… your quote I replied to was “For a 2 or 4 team playoff, 2 teams from the same conference is dumb.”
No worries, though. This is definitely an agree to disagree argument and I’ll stop cluttering up the thread with replies.

It doesn’t make sense to replace Georgia with an inferior team just because Georgia lost to Alabama in the SEC championship. Sure, they got routed by Alabama. Georgia just routed the #2 team in the country. They’re pretty clearly one of the four best teams. Notre Dame’s the only other 1 loss team in the country, and they’re disqualified using your criteria because they lost at home to Cincinnati. So, next up is a 2 loss Baylor team. You really think it’s better for a 2 loss Big 12 team to be in the playoff than a 1 loss SEC team?We literally saw them play a game ago and Alabama won by 3 scores.
I guess I just find it odd we need to see if Alabama can slap them around again.
I’m not against the notion two teams from the same conference can be two of the best……but if you lose by 3 scores, on a neutral field, in the last regular season game you played, I kind of don’t care if you might be one of the 4 best teams. You had your shot and got pushed around.
When only 4 teams get a crack, I don’t see how it makes sense for a team to get soundly beat by 1 of the other 4 reps and then get another chance to beat them a week later. Maybe people disagree with that.
You dont want a SEC championship repeat? Be better
We're fans, so "being better" really doesn't apply. And as a fan, a repeat of the SEC (or any other conference) Championship game just seems less interesting for some of us than would a matchup of teams that didn't play just 2 games ago.
It is supposed to be a match up of the 2 best teams in the country,
If you were a 1 loss OSU and a no loss Mich and OSU didnt make the playoffs because of some no 2 team from same congerence rule, you better believe OUS fans would be bitching a storm.
I just dont see the issue...and i am not a UGA or Alabama fan at all.
You could make the same argument with the "better" NFL team getting knocked out in the divisional round, but saaying they should be in the Super Bowl anyway because after all, they're the better team and that's what the Super Bowl is all about.
I just think the conference championship games should be viewed as the first round of the playoffs. Lose, and you're out. Probably would have stopped the coming super conference consolidation, too.
No right or wrong answer, just personal preferences as to what some fans would rather watch.
Will this bring his draft stock down to the Browns?Matt Corral being carted off the Sugar Bowl field........damn.....
There’s just too much disparity between the conferences for that, imo. An SEC conference championship game isn’t the same as a PAC-12, ACC, or Big-12 championship game. Even the Big 10 championship game isn’t the same with how mediocre the West is thanks to the horrible job the conference did separating the divisions. You could make the same argument with the "better" NFL team getting knocked out in the divisional round, but saaying they should be in the Super Bowl anyway because after all, they're the better team and that's what the Super Bowl is all about.

The SEC circle jerk gets excessive but it’s the best conference.
Then there’s the issue of what to do with teams not in conferences. Do they leapfrog a team that lost in a conference title game even though they sat at home? An SEC rematch is boring but I can’t get mad about it because they’re very likely the two best teams this year. I disagree with your NFL analogy because there’s far more uniformity in the NFL. No one has to decide who the best teams are because you make the playoffs based on your record. You don’t have that in college obviously so I don’t have a problem with the committee trying to pick the four ‘best’ teams, even if two are from the same conference.
Here's how I look at it: Alabama just beat Georgia. Now suppose Georgia turns around and beats Alabama. Why is one win more important than the other when they're literally two games apart? Shit, if 'Bama loses, I could see them using a "best two out of three" excuse.
Georgia had a chance to prove they were the better team, and failed. Move on. Too many of the non-playoff games already don't seem to matter. Going into a conference championship game like Georgia did knowing that they were still in if they lost just seems lame to me.
