2022 Season | Series #48 | Guardians @ Rangers | Sep. 23-25, 2022

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The Guardians have a 10-game lead and are the only team in the division over .500. If anybody predicted this on Sep. 4, when we were tied with Minnesota and one game up on the White Sox they'd have been laughed off the board.

When we went to bed on Sep. 4 the Guardians had just lost five in a row at home to Baltimore and Seattle by scores of 4-0, 3-0, 6-1, 4-0, and 6-3. The combined score was 23-4. They looked like the Little Engine that finally ran out of steam when they ran into teams that featured pitching and power.

But the next series was in Kansas City and the G's got their mojo back, winning 18 of the last 21. The three games they lost were started by Hunter Gaddis (1) and Cody Morris (2) - guys who spent most of the season in Columbus. The last time we lost a game that was started by a member of the regular rotation was over three weeks ago.

The White Sox have lost six in a row, including getting swept by Detroit at home this weekend. They've scored 10 runs in their last five games. They appear to be just going through the motions.

Their last nine games consist of six against Minnesota and three on the road against San Diego. The Padres are fighting for a wild card spot and need to win. The Sox could easily lose six of their last nine or even more. Talk about crumbling.

The Twins have lost 9 of 11 and are five games under .500. They're also going through the motions.

This is a September nobody could have predicted.
The collapses of Minnesota and Chicago were just weird. The fact that we swept both of them in their ballparks was remarkable. We essentially took their souls, but they also willingly GAVE us their souls. They didn’t put up that much of a fight. They both continued to fall apart against really bad teams.

This is not taking away from what our Guardians have accomplished at all, but I feel that the Twins' performance was dramatically influenced by the number of injuries they sustained. We've experienced the very same thing fairly recently. Staying healthy is part of the game and I'm sure being the youngest roster in MLB has something to do with it so I'm not going to claim good fortune. The Guardians have a pretty solid team, but it's not as good as it's going to be IMO. Super excited to watch this team mature and get better while also enjoying this very moment. The best of both worlds.

It just seems like Oscar has native ability and an infectious enthusiasm that will never see him down.. Now if he could only react better to balls off the bat, take better routes to balls hit into the air and send the ball to the cut off man (it's his job to line up with where the ball is supposed to go, albeit to 2nd base or home) every time.. Then, he'd be playing the entire game..

Offensively, he's got to stop chasing the ball off the plate, a la Jhonny Peralta..
Defensively, put in the work.. even then.. the instincts are not there putting him in harms way..

not the otto preminger version.... thoughts?

Completely agree with this. We do basically have a DH slot wide open though. With Brennan, Valera, Benson all as RF options we definitely have the defense covered there so whoever shows the best offense will likely be able to grab that spot and push Oscar to DH. If we were still relying on Franmil at DH this would not be a luxury we had but we do have it.

It's really just annoying that a guy who is so fast with a strong arm is not a competent defender though. I wonder if it's more a matter of focus, or instincts but either one can be sort of innate. Someone like Kwan clearly has laser focus and never misses a beat. Not saying OGonz has ADHD or anything but he does not seem to have that same level of focus. Perhaps it also comes out in plate discipline.

I don't think Oscar Gonzalez has the correct type of speed to translate into a plus defender in the outfield.

He's "fast" in the same way Derrick Henry is "fast." He's a freight train that takes a few steps to get up to speed.

What translates into special defense is guys who are quick. Kwan and Straw are quick. To stick to the football analogy, give me that Austin Ekeler quickness in the outfield. Sure, Derrick Henry might have the fastest top speed tracked by Statcast, but Ekeler gets up to speed much quicker.

Yeah or even Rosario/Gimenez might illustrate that. Rosario is fast but Gimenez is quick. Who makes the better defender is pretty obvious.

It's just history and tradition. The fact that it was the team name during my entire childhood and while growing up. I know in our culture today things like tradition and history are almost seen as negatives and change is always superior but when it comes to sports especially tradition means alot.

No, I don’t believe you actually have an emotional attachment to a cartoon mascot. I don’t buy that the history of the team is encapsulated by a racist cartoon in a state where we eradicated Native Americans , but rather the “history and tradition” is represented by the actual players themselves.

Muhhh tradition and history!! Cancel culture!!

Crying these same boring tropes is history and tradition, at this point. It’s been repeated so many times it’s pathetic and boring…

We win the central and we’re still complaining about the team name. Jesus Christ. Move on.

It's not 100% abnormal around here sadly...

@HammerGold sincerely talk baseball, this is a winning team and they just went and did something no one outside of Cleveland expected them too. Past and whatnot is irrelevant right now, what it relevant is we are in the playoffs!

If you want to talk about something else then go to a different section and speak your piece...

Which native tribes were eradicated? I know natives were forcibly moved but I don’t know about being eradicated. Just asking…

I’ve been staying out of this. But this one…..WHAT. Even if you just went by them being moved look up Trail of Tears. Some people need a history lesson.
