Anyone think we sign Kwan or maybe even Gonzalez to a long term deal if next season is similar to this one?
Kwan maybe. The front office seems to want to replace Oscar at the first opp, he was a nice surprise but the minute he scuffles he will be shipped off to make room for Valera.

Yeah it would make no sense for either side to engage in extension talks with literal rookies.

Cleveland usually works an extension near arb 1 timeline... Gimenez is close enough while Kwan isn't anywhere near. I expect TMac, Naylor and Gimenez to have discussions/maybe an offer...

Also just glancing at the payroll... essentially Cleveland has only JRam (at 14 million), Straw at (2.9 million) and Clase (at 1.9 mil). Quan and Bieber are going into arb 2, and I think so is Naylor (but I could be wrong about that) while Plesac, Civale and Karinchak are supposedly Arb 1. Rosario and Maile are going into their last year of Arbitration. At the moment our payroll looking to be around 66 million, give or take some with me estimating Arb raises. That's including Rosario, but not Shaw. With Shaw would be about 70... Would be less than 60 if we move Rosario...

We have room to negotiate an extension or three... lol

Has there been discussion here about playoff roster yet? Does it deserve it's own thread?

I do wonder if the extension timeline is getting earlier with the increase in expected salary in arb 2 and arb 3. You are seeing more players extended way out very early, sometimes with very negative results. I don't see Cleveland extending guys before they have played in the majors, but after a season or two of high performance, that may be the time to do it if you want to buy out free agency years. Gimenez seems to be the prime candidate. Pitchers, because of injury, are a bit more scary.

The early pre-arb extensions are just the new 1st year arb extensions that Cleveland popularized back in the 90s that small to mid-markets are using to keep talent long term.

Significantly more risk with them, because there is a long list of players who have good rookie seasons and never get any better or get worse. But for your can't miss guys like Tatis, Franco, and Rodriguez it makes a ton of sense for markets like Tampa and Seattle who wouldn't be able to compete for those same players on the open market.

Had this had precedence back in 2015, think the same thing would have happened with Lindor before the 2016 season. They approached him about the largest pre-arb extension in MLB history (at the time) as is anyways.

Any chance they approach Civale for an extension? I'd argue this would be a great time to "buy low" and get one or two extra seasons of control via team options.

I'd trade Plesac, go year to year (wouldn't mind a small extension) with Quantrill and extend Civale and McKenzie

With his injuries history including in the minors, I would never approach Civale with a extension, actually I would try to sell high on him if there’s a market for him……Not to mention with the rich of pitching prospects we have coming.

I'd think they would like to keep him long term, but with his injury history, it just doesn't make much sense too...

Agree 100% -- thought Civale was an excellent candidate for a but low extension....still do. He is at the least a very serviceable starting pitcher, with still some "#3" type potential. Can he dodge the injury bug moving forward? There would be the risk, but if the price is right...
