Game Thread | Game #31 | Mavericks @ Cavs | Dec. 17, 2022

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I’m sorry neither of them know how bang and establish position inside and are pushed off their sweet spots very easily
They're not banger bigs. They are switch and rim runner bigs.

In fairness people described Ty Lue the exact same way when he took over for Blatt. The game threads here hated him. Now he’s considered one of the best coaches in the league.

Not saying JBB is headed there lol he’s clearly not.

I still can’t get over that inbounds to Allen…

Lue is a championship coach because he is a fucking maestro with that clipboard and he has a way with connecting to the biggest stars with the biggest egos.

The man kept Kyrie/LeBron/Love together for a really great 3 year run where we won a title against the 73-9 Warriors.

And I called him A-Ty-O. He just consistently dialed up gold out of timeouts. He would have never in a million years inbounded a ball to Allen AFTER A TIMEOUT.

He would have had 1 big man inbounding, he would have put in Mitchell, Love as the screener Garland and honestly probably LeVert or Okoro for speed as an outlet. OR maybe Neto. But it would have been an entire play specifically designed to get the ball to his best shooters. Lue could almost ALWAYS get the ball to Kyrie late in games to ice them if he had a timeout.

We went 9-36 from 3 (25%) and missed 9 free throws. None of that has anything to do with coaching. Tired legs on the second night of a back to back.
Yeah, this should have been a routine win if we could only shoot free throws. I can understand the 3-point shooting on the second night but all those missed free throws?

Love sucks. Missed 3's, bad passes that were stolen, and slow on D. We need Wade badly.

I love Allen's defense but he has no touch around the rim. If he can't dunk it the ball is not going in. He needs to shitcan that left-handed jump hook. And why are we inbounding to him in a critical situation?

Christian Wood had 26 points and 14 boards after 32 and 14 last night. That guy is a hell of a player.

Mitchell and Garland were 2-for-15 on 3's. Hard to believe, even on the second night of a back-to-back. It's not like they had to travel last night.

Garland blew an uncontested layup on a breakaway that would have won it in regulation time.

Great defense by the Cavs; 99 points for Dallas in 53 minutes. And after Walker hit a 3 to start the overtime they were scoreless for the last 4:31.

Ugly shooting by the Cavs but a win's a win. Lucky we escaped with a W considering how badly we shot the ball.

Just catching up with this game. From the scoreboard looks like a rough one to watch. At least we came out with the win. Don't know that I feel super good about it. Even on a b2b, the Cavs really should be putting games like this away instead of needing OT to scrape by a team without half their core rotation.

I honestly think we may have comfortably beat them with Luka and their starters in tonight. We would have taken things more seriously plus their starters played a back to back and had to travel last night but most of their reserves were very fresh and ready to battle.

Was hoping for Okoro to do a different pose in the group pic…

Tired legs perhaps exacerbated by having to work too hard to get shots, and/or not playing Neto and Cedi consistently to give the starters more of a break. Coaching always has a little something to do with it, whatever “it” may be.

At the game. They’re reviewing the goaltending call (or it may have been one of the challenges…can’t remember), but during this time Jason Kidd is in the huddle talking to his players (ya know, coaching) and JBB and the rest of the bench spends the entire time watching the Jumbotron.

Next possession, two of our guards hesitate on a ball-screen for Kemba, unsure if they’re supposed to switch.

Garlands gotta break out of the shooting slump.
He was the best Cav on the court tonight. If instead of getting the ball back with 3 seconds on the shot clock 30 feet away from the basket, he was actually getting good looks, I'm sure he would've shot better.

The guy who had an atrocious shooting night was Mitchell.

Wild game. I paused everything for an hour or 2 before watching it, and I read the game thread as I caught up on the game. I have some different conclusions, and some of the same conclusions.

Dallas played guys with fresh legs, our legs were tired. Kemba looked like prime Kemba tonight, maybe resting for most of the season did him some good.

We couldn't hit threes. We sucked at the foul line. But we ultimately won with defensive effort. Almost everyone's shot was off. Mitchell, Garland, Allen, were atrocious and missing stuff that is usually almost automatic for them. Everyone was below par offensively.

But we did move the ball pretty well. Lots and lots of passing, on some possessions too much passing as we ran out of shot clock. We needed better shot clock awareness at times, and needed to be more aggressive taking shots. But we kept moving the ball looking for a wide open shot and Dallas to their credit wasn't giving up many of those.

The inbounds play to JA was mind numbingly stupid, and I agree- why was JA in the game at that point? I want to hear what JBB says about that post game.

A win is a win, even this ugly, I'll take it.

Doesn't help that shorter players are permitted, for inexplicable reasons, to push them in the act of shooting.
That’s why when they go inside they to play stronger. Throw their bodies into those shorter players!!
