yes... he's just cruising.. quick game too.. going at a 2 hour 15 minute pace..Cal has retired 15 in a row.....
Everybody has a fav stat...usually one that favors their opinion.
But as Mark Twain famously said...
'There are lies, damn lies, and then there are statistics.'
The only 'stats' and opinions that count in the end are those of the FO and Tito.
The lineup, rotation, bullpen, and bench they choose answer all the relative debates.
If Amed is positioned in a way where he's gobbling up a lot of baseballs then it'd be hard to say his defense is hurting the team, no? There's obviously limitations with all these stats but it seems like we know how to at least use him reasonably well at SS.
No one has said he's a bad player. In fact, all but a select few think he's exactly how you described him...........average. If Arias wasn't promoted and ready for an opportunity, Gimenez a far better defensive SS, Rocchio in Columbus and Amed making almost $8M in the last year of arbitration before hitting FA then it wouldn't even be a talking point. Problem is all of those things are true.Ahmed isnt hurting the team. Its a long term thing. Ahmed is an average defender and average hitter, but that is compared to other MLB shortstops. You knwo the most athletic position at the major league level. Average is still pretty freaking good.
Its that more talented defenders and maybe even better bat are coming behind him. We arent going to pay Ahmed 10 mill or whatever he will get when he can be replaced much cheaper at possibly more production, so no room for Ahmed.
But no one should say he is a bad player, just average, players like Jose are the ones the indians pay. I know Straw too, but that was he was looking like a top 3 defender and decent bat.
I have to ask what you think the advantage of having Amed at SS is? He's not as good defensively as Arias or Gimenez and he may or may not be better offensively as Arias. Regardless, if defense is the reason to have Straw as the starting CFer then should that apply to SS as well? I'm not trying to be argumentative here. I'm just trying to understand the logic and when/how it is applied. If Amed is positioned in a way where he's gobbling up a lot of baseballs then it'd be hard to say his defense is hurting the team, no? There's obviously limitations with all these stats but it seems like we know how to at least use him reasonably well at SS.
At what point do the saber metric gurus realize that Cal operates outside of those desired stats? He's at 450 IP and counting of success.Team looks ready for the regular season!! Quantrill is pitching great, Amed is cooking, Bell hitting a dinger, Oscar with two XBHs, Kwan getting on bae, and Straw 0-3 with 3 Ks.
