Did Koby Altman nail the rebuild?

The bottom line is neither Koby or JBB had any concern about actually winning in the first round of the playoffs, their goal was satisfied to just get there. It was more important to them to get there with their young core that apparently has miles of "runway", and Love had no place with that group since he's in the swan song of his career.

I can't agree that they didn't "have any concern" about winning the first round. I'd agree that their minimum goal was just to make the playoffs, but "no concern" about whether they win or lose makes no sense. Going further always gives you better/more valuable experience.

And I could understand the argument about "playing the young guys" more if they hadn't gone out and signed Danny Green, with the expectation that he'd be in the playoffs rotation as a shooter. Or if they had a young 4/small ball 5 on the roster to take Love's minutes. But they didn't.

They just wrongly evaluated players 3-4 players. They wrongly thought Wade, Green, and Rubio all would play better than they did, and they thought Love would be worse.

I also think Love's attitude bugged JBB, but that's just a guess.

I would be inclined to agree with you but Koby sounded pretty Kumbaya about everything today in his presser. It came off strong that just getting into the playoffs was the main goal, and they had close to zero expectations beyond that. Koby's actions and words at the trade deadline conveyed the same message, and based on how the team failed to compete in round 1 that message came through loud and clear to them. Low expectations on the players and head coach was the vibe, and Koby got what he asked for.

Well, what would you expect him to say after his team got his butt kicked? It's a young group of guys and he didn't want them to get depressed or down on the team. Just because Koby didn't blow the few assets we have remaining on a marginal player doesn't mean he wouldn't have liked to have advanced in the playoffs.

To be honest, I don't know how you'd even coach guys not to care. Of course they cared, and wanted to win. Koby wanted them to win, JBB wanted them to win, and they failed. So Koby puts the best face on that disappointment that he can, and moves on.

Koby has been setting this tone since the trade deadline if not sooner.

I bet he's going to regret waiting until January next year to fire JBB. He's too loyal. The type of guy who lets his wife cheat and then begs for her to come back.
Unfortunately they just gave a new 4 year extension to JBB and the first year of it begins during the '23-24 season. I've never heard of a head coach getting fired before he even starts year 1 of a new contract. Not to mention his father is also part of the front office. Once '24 kicks in I would assume JBB will be on the hot seat if we don't see him suddenly learn how to manage a rotation on game day.

I saw the quotes from Koby's end of the season presser. The most disappointing thing is he was acting like they were happy just to make the playoffs. I'd understand those types of quotes if they hadn't made the Mitchell trade but he put them on the contention clock after making that deal.

I would've been sad but fine if we lost a close first round series. 7 games, closely contested and just losing because our guys got outplayed. Rhat is not what happened. I am not loving what we are hearing from Koby right now

At least Kerr won championships jbb just flat out ducks and his job is safe we have to deal with him for another year Jesus Christ. I hope I’m wrong but I just don’t see it with Jb

Whining about coaches is universal. Can you imagine the privilege of whining about a coach who had won you four championships? We’re whining about a coach who has won a grand total of one postseason game

I can only assume you're probably one of the people who wanted Love gone a long time ago, this move met your preference, so you're going to condone it and put it completely on Love because it fits your narrative. Because it's crystal clear any objective observer that Love was given no choice if he wanted to ensure he would get a chance to remain viable as a player for as long as possible.
If you mean I wouldn't have given Love the near max contract in the first place; nor would I have given the $6M/year contract to Wade which contributed to Love's benching, you are entirely correct. I also notice Love's contract over the past four years vs. his performance is not mentioned in your analysis. I (and I suspect the Coach as well) would have been satisfied with the 6th Man of the Year contender production we saw the previous year, but this was obviously not the case.

Cavs could have used him in the playoffs but he was not available because he requested and received a buyout. It simply is what it is.

Between this series and the Indians' continual cuckage at the hands of the Yankees + the Cubs series, it's sickening to not once be able to make these asshole big market media members choke on their words.
wait until Browns season starts

Yeah, if what Koby is saying is actually how he feels, he's as bad if not worse than JBB and people should be protesting for him to get shit canned too.
koby has a boss that might have a different opinion. They we can get a twofer as they both are sent packing.

I just dont like Altman declaring to the press that cavs would basically stand pat when he went all in getting Mitchell. When he traded all those picks it signalled that this organization is ready for post season success. Being status quo goes against all that. I wish he would have some introspection and said we would do everything to take the next step. While i believe JBB can improve as a coach, the cavs dont have the luxury of time especially with Mitchell's desire to go to NY. If Koby wanted this team to grow organically, he shouldnt have traded the farm for immediate success and waited for the core of DG/Mobley/Lauri/Allen to develop/mature along with this coach.
