2024 Cleveland Browns Off-Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If their goal is "optimize the things we already do" then Kubiak is absolutely a fine choice. No argument from me there.

If their goal is "we want to bring in coaches with extensive experience with both run and pass concepts we haven't been extensively using" then it doesn't feel like Kubiak really provides that as much as other candidates would.

Just my two cents. I suppose it boils down to how a person views the operation as a whole on offense. Is it fundamentally broken or does it mostly work fine and they just need to smooth out a few bumps here and there?

Would have a hard time convincing me that Stefanski's system is broken in any way after picking Joe Flacco up off the couch and closing pretty strong.

I think the balance of errors we've seen from this offense aren't structural, but rooted in pre-snap penalties and the user-error of turnovers. Some of those being generated by guys being out of position or inconsistent timing.

Things which could be viewed as a function of prep, position coaching units.

I would be okay with them hiring Klint, but I was hoping they would incorporate more presnap motion in the offense next season. I had thought removing AVP would mean they intended to bring in someone who can implement that.

If Klint and Stefanski have chemistry then it's not a bad move. Just comes off as him bringing in his guys now that they are available.

I love Callahan, but it would be totally fine if he plans to leave and Dickerson gets hired.

I recognize that offense and defense aren’t the same thing so there’s a level of apples to oranges here, but I also remember a few years back that people were lauding how much the last former coordinator turned 49ers position coach turned Browns coordinator gleaned from his short stint with San Francisco.

That was Joe Woods.

Pretty disingenuous comparison.

Offense and defense aren’t the same thing was literally the first thing I said :chuckle:

The overarching point I was trying to make is that I am weary of just automatically assuming a coach has learned a bunch of new stuff just because they spent one season, which is ultimately a tiny fraction of their overall career, recently coaching in an elite system.

I would be weary of somebody like Darrell Bevell for the same reasons. Does his short time with Mike McDaniel supersede the 20+ years of NFL coaching not under McDaniel?

Like I said already in this thread, it will be awesome if Kubiak or Bevell ends up being the OC and they have learned everything there is to learn from Kyle Shanahan and Mike McDaniel and can bring that knowledge here.

I just think it’s a little dangerous to assume that is all.

Sure this would be awesome, but it’s also a bit hyperbolic for what we actually need.

I can see value in someone who Kevin shares background and comfort with…who also just so happened to get a year boot camp under the most innovative coach in the league who also came from a similar background.

If Klint can come in under his buddy Kevin and just share/emulate how Kyle is approaching innovation off of their familiar base concepts, beautiful. He didn’t do nothing for a year, nor did he transform into Shanahan after a year.

Idk, feels like a weird discussion now with no purpose. And I blame you for bringing that bum Woods into it. :chuckle:

As @AZ_ said and I agree with, we don’t know and aren’t really ever going to know exactly why Stefanski made these coaching changes.

Many people who break down a lot of the X’s and O’s of what the Browns do, did quickly jump on the idea that Stefanski was looking to bring in people with more experience with concepts that Stefanski has not used very extensively like RPOs, condensed formations, varied shotgun run concepts and expansive presnap motion. All things that also theoretically better fit Watson’s skill set too as he has shown a reasonable amount of uncomfortableness both playing under center and fully turning his back to the defense with the style of play action that Stefanski used with success with Mayfield, Brissett and sometimes Flacco (it was most varied with Flacco) taking the snaps.

Now, based on some of the rumored candidates who may be getting an interview, perhaps the reasons some folks thought the coaching changes were made aren’t really the case at all?

Ultimately they’ve interviewed just one person so far and we’ll have to see who they end up going with before we make any sort of tangible judgements.

But if the Browns are generally happy with their operation and are primarily looking to clean up some of the more noticeable execution-based issues like pre-snap penalties/turnovers and want to bring in somebody who has a lot of experience with Stefanski and with what Stefanski already does, that’s completely fine.

It just flies in the face of what a lot of people, myself included, assumed were the reasons for the changes in the first place.

But you know what they say happens when you assume…

Per MKC, Browns have offered Duce Staley the RB coach role but so have the Jets..

I would assume the jets offer comes with an AHC title. Ours is used by ventrone

I was gonna say the Browns offer comes with Nick Chubb, but then I remembered they have Breece Hall...

The Browns don't have Aaron Rodgers bogging shit up, though!
