2024 Cleveland Browns Off-Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Turner would be an absolute no go for me. Pretty much sucked in Washington all three years he was OC there and got fired.

Kubiak and Stefanski have worked together quite a bit in the past and Klint was relatively successful in his lone season as an OC with Minnesota, but I just don't see how he's bringing a whole lot different to the table unless we think he's gleaned a ton from his one year with Kyle Shanahan.

Robinson is the guy I'd be most interested from the three that MKC listed by quite a bit.

He's got five years experience in McVay University and the McVay Tree is already pretty strong - Packers HC Matt LaFleur, Bengals HC Zac Taylor, Seahawks OC Shane Waldron, Kentucky OC Liam Coen, Washington HC Jedd Fisch, Vikings HC Kevin O'Connell, Vikings OC Wes Phillips, Panthers OC Thomas Brown among others.

The obvious downside/risk to Robinson is that he's never called plays before and it would very likely take a promotion to play calling OC to get him away from the Rams.

Zac Robinson, now that's a name I haven't heard in like 15 years.

Dude was a baller at Okie State. Lowkey NCAA Football god back then :chuckle:

Cool to see he's coaching now

If he had college overlap with Brandon Weeden, I'm out. Can't have an offensive coordinator who spent any time with Brandon Weeden.

Klint Kubiak is the one and I bet it is already done. The rest are just window dressings.

The
Mary Kay name drops the following for the Browns OC job.

Rams quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Zac Robinson
49ers passing game coordinator Klint Kubiak
Raiders passing game coordinator Scott Turner

The bigger story here is MKC suggesting Stefanski giving up play calling duties is seriously being considered, pending the candidate..

If he's going to do this for anyone, its going to be Kubiak, whom he trusts and has a pre-established level of connection with.

The fit here makes too much sense.

I don't really have a huge issue with Klint Kubiak in a vacuum. He has called plays before. He worked under Kyle Shanahan this past year. He has several years under his belt working directly for/with Kevin Stefanski.

A Kubiak hire, however, would definitely push back against the whole notion of "they got rid of the old staff so they could get fresh new ideas in place" idea that a lot of people (myself included) have openly speculated was the reason for all the changes.

And maybe that wasn't the reason for any of the changes, we don't know and will probably never know exactly.

But unless Kubiak has gleaned Shanny's entire system in one season, he's basically bringing a longtime knowledge and execution of the concepts and ideas that Stefanski's already been using his entire career.

Preseason MVP Austin Watkins signed with the Eagles.

What a loss.

I think you have to go back to why Alex Van Pelt was brought in originally. He is a career quarterback coach who works with young highly drafted investments at the position. He was supposed to refine Baker.

Is he really a good fit for our current needs on offense? He's working with a finished product in DeShaun Watson and a fascinating backup project in DTR.

Maybe AVP just didn't think his career strengths served the franchise too well, and he could go off and fix Justin Fields or Bryce Young.

If that is what helps foster continuity of system, eliminate pre-snap penalties and communication efforts that will go toward reducing turnovers....

That wins.

I don't really need some misnomer about "fresh ideas" or whatever, KS is pretty fresh in terms of how his offense can adjust and create new ways of beating you.

If their goal is "optimize the things we already do" then Kubiak is absolutely a fine choice. No argument from me there.

If their goal is "we want to bring in coaches with extensive experience with both run and pass concepts we haven't been extensively using" then it doesn't feel like Kubiak really provides that as much as other candidates would.

Just my two cents. I suppose it boils down to how a person views the operation as a whole on offense. Is it fundamentally broken or does it mostly work fine and they just need to smooth out a few bumps here and there?
