2009 NBA Draft Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
1. Speedy point guard
2. Athletic swingman
3. Big capable of playing center

At 30 you won't be able to find any of those really. There aren't many speedy point guards in this draft.

Athletic wingmen depends on your definition but Omri might be the only one available. There aren't any Centers in the bottom 10 worth taking (Mullins goes around 20 thabeet goes lottery)

Well Mills is now going under the radar. He's not getting the same hype since the Olympics. There are mocks where he goes as far as 29. If he slips to 30 then he'd be the "Speedy Point Guard" people are looking for.

That would be a great result. This board would be taken to e new level with an influx of Aussie Basketball heads.

In all seriousness, Mills quickness would have a role on this squad. His on ball pressure defensively and ability to to push the ball up court are attributes this team needs. Whether he can do this on a NBA level is to be determined.

if we can get him, i'd like to get a backup PG for this year first, season Mills this year...

something like this...

I think in this draft we're going to go for someone who will come off our bench and GET BUCKETS. At any position. Our bench was so devoid of individual scoring punch it's shocking we kept LeBron on the bench for so long...and we paid the price with Delonte West and Mo Williams shockingly high minutes totals (a factor in their 3 pt shot vanishing late in the year?)

Guys who fit this bill and are projected on average from the 25-35 range (for now) are Marcus Thornton, Wayne Ellington, DaJuan Summers, everyone's favorite Sam Young, Damion James...to name a few

Summers and Thornton are particularly exciting prospects at #30, IMO

I would also keep an eye on both UNC wing players...I wouldn't mind either of them in the second round.

DaJuan Summers, Sam Young, Damion James all are quite athletic wings ready to play right now, who should be available at 30. These are guys with more than just a little bit of experience playing in tough-as-nails conferences...all very solidly built physically, with a level of polish to their games...

Or, if you prefer an extremely high upside and intriguing pick (who does have some nice skills right now), consider Austin Daye from Gonzaga. A 7-foot SF type who is a pure scorer. He is quite thin and weak though, and has quite a ways to go to develop a level of physicality to his game. But he is quite the scorer from that SF spot, unconscious shooter and very solid putting the ball on the floor...unbelievable matchup problem coming off the bench. He used his length very well on defense and can guard SG's to PF's

But he is quite far away physically...most teams won't take a flyer on someone that far away physically, but at #30, do you say no this kind of talent?

Or do you go with someone who is solidly built with degrees of polish and power to their games, but with much lower upside?

I pose this question to yall.

He cant shoot nor does he finish well.

You might need to take into consideration his injury number one, and the school he played at number two. Two of my friends from highschool were recruited to play at his school. They weren't even close to being big time prospects.

Granted I haven't seen enough of mills to make an astute evaluation. I have seen his advanced numbers, and I can see where you are coming from, but there may be other factors at play as to why #1 he didn't shoot impressive percentage,s and #2 why he couldnt finish as well as expected around the hoop.

Mills can shoot albeit a touch streaky. This has as much to do with the lack of quality team mates which seen his have to force some tough looks. His finishing inside is a concern as he doesn't get the line with any frequency.

Still though he has some strengths which are this team weaknesses. At #30 it isn't a bad selection should he last that long.

As I said before...

Jermaine Taylor is the answer to this question.

Awesome 3 point shooter. Awesome mid-range shooter. Ferocious dunker.

Jermaine isn't a perfect basketball player but if you're looking for instant offense off the bench, that is the name of his game.

I would rather have Darren Collison then Mills

I just don't know how well Damion James will be able to get buckets early on in his NBA career. he is a guy who has a very shakey perimeter game and at 6'7 could stuggle some in the post. he is very athletic and could develope into a nice player but I wouldn't count on him much as a scorer early on. as far as guys who could be scoring threats off the bench I think you are looking at Thorton, Ellington, Douglas, Christmas(more on a 2nd rd guy then at 30), Budinger, Brown, Summers, Taylor...and Casspi sounds interesting although I haven't seen him play. I think Young will be able to score but his best asset will be his toughness and defense. again I haven't seen him play but Beaubois seems to have the potential to put the ball in the hoop from what I read.

I think this would be a solid pick and give a little more size in the backcourt. The recaps from Portsmouth had him as the best player there. The good news is that he reportedly visited with the Cavs early in the process, something that happened with JJ Hickson as well.

As for a second rounder, I might like to see Alade Aminu, another prospect who looked good at Portsmouth. He gives us length and might develop into something as he gets bigger and stronger. We will have to see if he has the heart.
