2009 NBA Draft Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This draft is pretty weak....although as we get closer to it, people start to think some of these mediocre guys are actually the solution to the Cavs problems.

Take some of this Daniel Gibson talk for example.

Gibson has his faults, but you aren't going to find a better player at 30 then Gibson, plus Gibson at 23 is not much older than some of these guys in the draft.

However, this time of year it's all about NEW faces....and sometimes fans just want to see a new face, even though the guy is actually a worse player.

I'm not really expecting much from the draft to be honest. Picking as low as the Cavs are in a weak draft like this, if they find a guy who can even play a little, it will be a surprise.

There do need to be realistic expectations for this draft. When you're picking at #30 in an average draft you can't expect to get an impact player. I'm just hoping the Cavs can find a player who can develop into a rotation player. I wouldn't expect a player drafted this year to make any significant contribution next season.

Players I have my eye on at #30 who have a good chance of being on the board are Derrick Brown, DaJuan Summers, Omri Casspi, and Darren Collison.
I wouldn't have a major problem with Patrick Mills. I do think there's a lot of potential there although the perimeter shooting is a concern. Mills is still only 20 so isn't fully developed as a player though.

no doubt this draft is thin and the odds are not in the Cavs favor that they are going to get a guy that turns into much more than a role player. the reason this draft is thin is because of a lack of quality bigs but I do think the Cavs can find a PG who can come in and be a legit back up. I do also think there could be some wing players in the 2nd rd where the Cavs pick that have a chance to catch on and play a role.

the thing that is interesting to me is if the Cavaliers grab a guy at 30 like DaJuan Summers or Derrick Brown they are getting a guy that scouts have said has lottery player type ability but will they ever be able to get those guys reach their potential. with the 30th pick it seems like that would be the best case scenerio. I know he has things he needs to improve but I really like the idea of getting a guy like Summers. if he works out he can give you a lot of line up fexablilty.

I'm intrigued the kid Draft Express has us taking to be totally honest... Not #1 on my list but definitely really intriguing:

Rodrique Beaubois

I think this would be a solid pick and give a little more size in the backcourt. The recaps from Portsmouth had him as the best player there. The good news is that he reportedly visited with the Cavs early in the process, something that happened with JJ Hickson as well.

Size is actually one of his negatives, IMO. He was listed at 6'4 throughout college until just recently when he was listed at 6'5. Not horrible, but you wouldn't want him to be much shorter.

I wouldn't mind Rodrigue either smooth. He would be an interesting prospect for us to pick up.

6'10" wingspan? Those are some long arms on a guy who is 6'2". His game looks good, especially fighting through picks and contesting shots. Only thing is that compilation video shows way to many 3's. He could give the magic an instant hard on.

Ferry, for all the crap he gets on here sometimes, is not a dumb guy.

The whole entire league is going to be watching the Cavs this offseason.

Forget the Lakers and the Magic, all eyes are going to be on the Cavs once the Finals end.

NOBODY wants to make this team any better than it already is. NOBODY.

I'm not sure that's true. On an intuitive level I agree with you -- it feels like the whole league will be against us since we had the best home record and finished with the best overall record in the regular season.

But in reality there are a lot of teams that need cash...A LOT OF THEM!

And if a GM sees a deal that will help him improve his teams position, and possibly save money as well, then they'll trade with anyone.

For this offseason Ferry has two choices: (1) the good, (2) and the best

There will be lots of good choices, and many possible deals, but we need to make sure that we take our time and get the best possible deals that will put this team in optimum position to get better. I trust Ferry because the pressure of losing Lebron after this next year will force him to be at 100% efficiency.

He seems to be like a Leandro Barbosa but may have the ability to be even better. A 6'10" wingspan on a guard sounds like a Mike Brown type player.

This guy got a quick trigger...kind of reminds me of JR Smith the way he pulls up off the dribble from deep. He is kind of smallish, though, but the 6'10 wingspan couldn't hurt (that is even more than Delonte's correct?), and if he is a solid one on one defender already, or if we can teach him how to defend SG's...this could be a very good pick for us. French players have also had a nice track record in the league in recent years, with Parker, Pietrus, Turiaf, Diaw (although it took him a few years), and now Batum having success in recent years

Delonte's wing span is 6'6" so yes this kid has stretch Armstrong arms compared to D-West. He does have a quick trigger, but he looks fast as can be, good on the ball defender, distributes well and can finish at or above the rim...looks like a quality pick at #30!

First, let me say someone spent an inordinate amount of time syncing that video to "Thriller"

Beaubois is built alot of like Rajon Rondo. Its funny, Jonathan Givony was talking about him during the last DX podcast and he said 2 years ago Beaubois couldnt dribble, shoot or speak English well but now he can dribble, shoot and speaks much better English.

He didnt shoot the three or FTs well at all in his French League and Id like an updated scouting report on him before really beginning to form an opinion on him.

Delonte had a 6'6" wingspan standing 6'2.75"

Just for Comparision sake.

Gilbert Arenas 6'2.25 6'9.5 Wingspan.
Fred Jones 6'2 7'0 wingspan
Mo 6'2 6'5 wingspan
Ben Gordon 6'2 6'8 wingspan
Rashard Wright 6'1 6'10 wingspan
Rashad McCants 6'4 6'10.5 wingspan
Monta Ellis 6'3 6'2 wingspan (alligator arms much?)
Eric Gordon 6'3 6'9 wingspan

I enjoyed the Thriller mix greatly. I was also a bit nervous about his free throws and 3pt percentage, but at pick 30 I would gladly take him as a bit of a project. I do see a bit of Rondo in him, he is a better shooter at that stage in his career, and I would greatly love to have our own true point guard who can shoot, score, assist, rebound and bring all the things that a true point guard brings to the table. I would say this kid's max potential is probably Rondo or below.

A better offensive version of Rondo would look great. I think im willing to take a chance on him at #30.

Draft express compares him to Ronnie Price.

I think he is a combo of Rondo and Gilbert Arenas (just not as good of a shooter).
