Hello, fellow RealCavsFans.

There was about 5 days left until the Regular Season starts (on October 22nd, 2009), but with the last basketball pre-season game against the Boston Celtics, we were left with a sour taste in our mouths. That's not the only thing we were given.

Mike Brown attempted to play the game like a Regular Season contest and thus gave us our first true return on a "Player Rotation".

Here's some cold hard facts about rotations:

  1. They are never ever set in stone throughout a season, due to many reasons (which are not limited to: injuries, suspensions, affect on a game, etc.).
  2. They sometimes impact how a game is played out (if a lineup is too slow, they will be run to death; if too small, they will be pounded in the post; balance is key).
  3. They have a number of players playing until the score is usually out of the opponent's reach (or until the opponent has separated itself by a wide margin).
  4. Certain players play at a specific time, which usually means that some players are always seen at the end of games (ex: LeBron will usually play close games and be in the game with the last 2 minutes of the game remaining).
  5. Minutes will add up each game so a player is not seen playing so much due to stamina.
  6. Never assume that a coach will stick to something every time, because it worked. Just because it worked against one team doesn't mean it'll work against the other. And if the coach doesn't realize it the first time, he'll surely realize it for next time. That's how a coach can continue to grow.

All of these things should be kept in mind when determining Mike Brown's Player Rotation. And it's also a reason why people should stay calm if we start to do poorly in a game for obvious reasons. Mike Brown has a very high IQ, but he also has a set way of doing things. He sticks to what he preaches, but will adjust it game to game.

Translation:
What we see against Boston on October 27th may very well change as early as the next game and will make us better as a result. And the fixes will continue to be made until we found what works, especially on a losing streak.

Historical Reference:
Mike Brown played this rotation for several minutes closer to the end of the 3rd quarter/beginning of the fourth quarter in the first game of the 2008-2009 Regular Season @ Boston:
Center|Power Forward|Small Forward|Shooting Guard|Point Guard
Lorenzen Wright|Anderson Varejao|Wally Szczerbiak|Sasha Pavlovic|Daniel Gibson

This resulted in a difference in the game score that cost them the game (what works the first time {second quarter rotation} may not work the second time). The Cavs lost by 5 or so points because of this. So how was the problem fixed:

Answer: Mike Brown adjusted his rotation so that Mo Williams would play every minute that LeBron did not. We saw this for a bit in this pre-season game, so that means Mike Brown intends to do it again.

Anyways, I will be attempting to edit this rotation as the season plays out, I will base this off a previous game seen.

--------------------------------------------------

As of 10/31/09 (10:45 PM):

Main Rotation:
Center|Power Forward|Small Forward|Shooting Guard|Point Guard
Shaquille O'Neal|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Anthony Parker|Mo Williams
Zydrunas Ilgauskas|J.J. Hickson/ Zydrunas Ilgauskas | Anthony Parker /Jamario Moon|Daniel Gibson|Delonte West

Notes about current rotation:

  • Mike Brown has Delonte in the rotation. For how long is currently being figured out.
  • Jamario Moon, while not part of the full rotation, is somewhat involved when foul trouble occurs with Anthony and while a team with swingman size is hard to deal with.
  • Anthony Parker currently picks up the small forward position minutes that LeBron doesn't play instead.
  • Zydrunas Ilgauskas is now being used against bigger frontcourts when the situation calls for it. He may not play with Shaq much, but will have an impact and playing time in such a situation.

Close Loss Vs. Boston Celtics (10/27/09):

Minutes Constraints (Close Loss):
Position|Player|Minutes Targeted
Center|Shaquille O'Neal|28:48
Center|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|24:38
Power Forward|Anderson Varejao|32:50
Power Forward|J.J. Hickson|06:13
Small Forward|LeBron James|44:55
Small Forward|Jamario Moon|13:40
Shooting Guard|Anthony Parker|40:09
Point Guard|Mo Williams|35:02
Combo Guard|Daniel Gibson|13:42

This is what I could gather from this game:

  • Mo Williams was hit with foul problems. So Daniel was used a little more at the point.
  • Zydrunas and Shaq saw time for 06:05 minutes at the same time.
  • LeBron, as usual, only had 03:05 minutes of rest at the second quarter against a competitive team.
  • J.J. Hickson was not trusted for a large amount of time. In fact, he saw less time than the final pre-season game. This means that Mike Brown lost a little faith in him and he'll have to earn it back.
  • Anthony Parker has temporarily replaced Delonte's role in the rotation as the solid, ball-moving, shooting, combo-guard. Considering his age and disadvantages, this may be the first huge adjustment Mike Brown makes, otherwise wearing out a veteran without Delonte's conditioning.
Blowout Loss @ Toronto Raptors (10/28/09):

Minutes Constraints (Blowout Loss):
Position|Player|Minutes Targeted

Center|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|13:24
Power Forward|Anderson Varejao|24:52
Power Forward|J.J. Hickson|05:21

Small Forward|Jamario Moon|19:16
Shooting Guard|Anthony Parker|38:27
Point Guard|Mo Williams|39:40
Combo Guard|Daniel Gibson|34:11

This is what I could gather from this game:

  • I believe Mike Brown wants to re-live the days of Tim Duncan and David Robinson playing the 4 and 5 through Shaquille O'Neal and Zydrunas Ilgauskas, via the Twin Towers route. There's no actual time-line for how long Mike will fancy this idea.
  • J.J. is still not close to being trusted for big duty.
  • LeBron will continue to get time off the 2nd and 4th quarters in most games.
  • The Twin Towers were used along with Mo Williams while LeBron sat.
  • So far, the rotation has not warranted being stuck, because the Cavs have yet to win a game with such a rotation. So there's still work in progress.
Blowout Win Vs. Charlotte Bobcats (10/31/09):

I missed the Minnesota victory, but since this game and that are both blowouts, I'll combine the date into this rotation, since Delonte has been added to it.

Substitution Method (Blowout Win):
Quarter|Min. Left|Center|Power Forward|Small Forward|Shooting Guard|Point Guard
1st|12:00|Shaquille O'Neal|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Anthony Parker|Mo Williams
1st|04:22|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Delonte West|Mo Williams
1st|Last Minute|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|J.J. Hickson|LeBron James|Daniel Gibson|Delonte West

2nd|04:48|Shaquille O'Neal|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Anthony Parker|Mo Williams
2nd|01:30|Shaquille O'Neal|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Daniel Gibson|Mo Williams
2nd|Last Shot|Shaquille O'Neal|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Anthony Parker|Mo Williams
3rd|12:00|Shaquille O'Neal|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Anthony Parker|Mo Williams
3rd|04:42|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Anthony Parker|Mo Williams
3rd|03:50|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Delonte West|Mo Williams
3rd|02:23|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Daniel Gibson|Delonte West
3rd|Last Shot|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|J.J. Hickson|LeBron James|Daniel Gibson|Delonte West
4th|12:00|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|J.J. Hickson|Anthony Parker|Daniel Gibson|Delonte West
4th|08:47|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|J.J. Hickson|Anthony Parker|Delonte West|Mo Williams
4th|08:22|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|J.J. Hickson|LeBron James|Delonte West|Mo Williams
4th|07:58|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Delonte West|Mo Williams
4th|06:39|Shaquille O'Neal|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Delonte West|Mo Williams
4th|01:33|Shaquille O'Neal|Anderson Varejao|Jawad Williams|Daniel Gibson|Mo Williams
4th|01:16|Darnell Jackson|J.J. Hickson|Jawad Williams|Jamario Moon|Daniel Gibson

Minutes Constraints (Blowout Win):
Position|Player|Minutes Targeted
Center|Shaquille O'Neal|26:44
Center|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|20:00
Power Forward|Anderson Varejao|33:16
Power Forward|J.J. Hickson|13:42
Small Forward|LeBron James|37:14
Shooting Guard|Anthony Parker|30:35
Point Guard|Mo Williams|34:59
Combo Guard|Delonte West|24:14
Combo Guard|Daniel Gibson|14:48
Garbage Man|Jamario Moon|01:37
Garbage Man|Jawad Williams|01:33
Garbage Man|Darnell Jackson|01:16

This is what I could gather from this game:

  • Mike Brown has successfully hid his impulse to pair Z and Shaq together, for now.
  • J.J. Hickson has managed to earn a little more time, but it might have been because of the opponent.
  • Mike Brown once again is re-living the success of last year, playing the starting lineup from 2008-09 (Z/Andy/LBJ/West/Mo) for 07:08 minutes.
  • Shaquille O'Neal is also used to work with that lineup in order for them to get a feel for each other.
  • Delonte and Boobie, Delonte and Mo, and Anthony and Mo are used, but not the combination at the guard spots of Anthony and Delonte. It may change later, though.
  • Anthony has become the small forward while LeBron sits, leaving Jamario out of the rotation, for now.

Comeback Win Vs. Washington Wizards (11/3/09):

A new category has been added for when the team is playing from behind (even in the first and second quarters only). Despite it being a blowout, the team had to play differently, and this is the result of that.

Substitution Method (Comeback Win):
Quarter|Min. Left|Center|Power Forward|Small Forward|Shooting Guard|Point Guard
1st|12:00|Shaquille O'Neal|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Anthony Parker|Mo Williams
1st|04:39|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Delonte West|Mo Williams
1st|02:49|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|J.J. Hickson|LeBron James|Daniel Gibson|Delonte West
2nd|12:00|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|Shaquille O'Neal|Anthony Parker|Daniel Gibson|Delonte West
2nd|07:35|Shaquille O'Neal|LeBron James|Anthony Parker|Daniel Gibson|Delonte West
2nd|07:01|Shaquille O'Neal|LeBron James|Daniel Gibson|Delonte West|Mo Williams
2nd|04:00|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Anthony Parker|Delonte West|Mo Williams
2nd|01:20|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Anthony Parker|Daniel Gibson|Delonte West
2nd|Last Minute|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Jamario Moon|Anthony Parker|Daniel Gibson
2nd|Last Shot|Shaquille O'Neal|LeBron James|Jamario Moon|Anthony Parker|Daniel Gibson
3rd|12:00|Shaquille O'Neal|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Anthony Parker|Mo Williams
3rd|06:24|Shaquille O'Neal|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Anthony Parker|Delonte West
3rd|04:52|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Anthony Parker|Delonte West
3rd|03:50|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Delonte West|Mo Williams
3rd|02:30|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Daniel Gibson|Delonte West
3rd|01:28|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|Shaquille O'Neal|LeBron James|Anthony Parker|Daniel Gibson
3rd|Last Shot|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|Shaquille O'Neal|LeBron James|Jamario Moon|Daniel Gibson
4th|12:00|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|Shaquille O'Neal|Jamario Moon|Daniel Gibson|Mo Williams
4th|09:32|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|Anderson Varejao|Jamario Moon|Daniel Gibson|Mo Williams
4th|06:02|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Daniel Gibson|Mo Williams
4th|04:53|Shaquille O'Neal|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Daniel Gibson|Mo Williams
4th|02:49|Anderson Varejao|LeBron James|Anthony Parker|Daniel Gibson|Mo Williams
4th|01:38|J.J. Hickson|Jawad Williams|Jamario Moon|Anthony Parker|Daniel Gibson
4th|01:20|Darnell Jackson|J.J. Hickson|Jawad Williams|Jamario Moon|Daniel Gibson

Minutes Constraints (Comeback Win):
Position|Player|Minutes Targeted
Center|Shaquille O'Neal|28:32
Center|Zydrunas Ilgauskas|21:03
Combo Big Man|Anderson Varejao|31:34
Power Forward|J.J. Hickson|04:27
Small Forward|LeBron James|35:59
Combo Swingman|Anthony Parker|28:13
Point Guard|Mo Williams|30:50
Combo Guard|Delonte West|20:50
Combo Guard|Daniel Gibson|26:39
9th/10th Man|Jamario Moon|08:55
Garbage Man|Jawad Williams|01:38
Garbage Man|Darnell Jackson|01:20

This is what I could gather from this game:

  • As each game passes by, Mike Brown tries to change the minute sheet from here to there, further showing proof he's a by-the-minutes and systems guy, but also tries to improve, something that fans don't see or realize as much. The proof is that you see players being subbed out 7 seconds from the previous game, either in the future or earlier. He inherits he Spurs coach mindset.
  • Jamario isn't completely out, but is used based on the situation. Clearly was needed when Parker had trouble, but Moon is used in the last minutes of each quarter regardless.
  • Z and Shaq were used in the twin tower set. This time, I believe it was based on the situation. With Blatche and Haywood out there, neither player relied on outside shooting and was long, so it was the perfect matchup. Additionally, it might not be an everyday thing from now on, based on the previous game against the Bobcats.
  • J.J. is in and out of the rotation somewhat, but seems to be given at least 4 minutes every game to try. Not as good as getting 10, but as the situation calls for it, he may get more or less from now on.
  • Delonte had some problems and probably was benched a little more because of it. But he still made an impact, so it shouldn't be too bad. It's similar to the Milwaukee Bucks game last year at the beginning of the season, where Delonte was feeling more emotional and was not getting support from the referees from the tough matchup on Michael Redd.
  • Slowly but surely, the rotation is being set in place and Brown does indeed use situations based on circumstance, even though he makes mistakes in judgment. He learns, which is what you can ask of a head coach in the NBA.
--------------------------------------------------

I will update this rotation chart when I have a chance to do so.

The top 3 things that could be asked of the posters on RealCavsFans would be:

  1. Stay true to yourself. Don't let such games get out of hand. You'll know the Cavs will get better as will Mike Brown. This is especially true when the going gets tough and DEMANDS changes. But don't get cocky from the wins either for that matter. We saw Twin Towers in Washington but not in Charlotte, that's the proof.
  2. Don't let the pressure of bad games get to you. They will be corrected and will happen occasionally, just not at the rate of winning games. But if a losing streak occurs, it's not the end. But they will happen on occasion, since nobody's perfect. In fact, if there's a problem in a single quarter, you'd expect things to be corrected as the games go on.
  3. Rotations have a big impact on the game, and don't expect Mike Brown to get complacent with how things roll. Expect some changes as early as the next game. Perhaps some players will get more time or less as a result of a certain set. Moon saw 1 minutes against Charlotte, but 8 against Washington, see what I mean?

I just wish he could stray a little from his script sometimes based on matchups and player momentum. His in-game adjustments have always been his biggest flaw and although I hope it will get better, I don't really expect it to...

Great job, Rabman - that's really good info.

It might be useful to talk about MB's season goals for Minutes Per Game per player as well - IMO, that fits right in to this discussion.

On the Mike Brown show today on 1100 WTAM, he mentioned that he would like to keep Shaq around 28 mpg, and Z around 22-ish. He also said that he sees lots of situations that the two of them would play together, which I really can't wait to see against certain matchups.

Great point about Mo's playing time last year. My guess is that MB would like to see that lower this year. I guess that all depends on how well Gibson and Delonte play. What do you think?

Lessening Mo's minutes will do more with how Gibson and Parker play. West was racking up major minutes last year.

love these rotation charts rabman!

my belief is that with delonte out, either mo or lebron have to be on the floor at all times. i just don't see how we can realistically compete with boobie at the point. i think we've given him every opportunity to turn into a pg, but he just doesn't have it at this level. he is good at what he does, but i just don't see how he can turn into the backup pg we'd like him to be.

if delonte comes back, then we have more space to have him running backup point, but as long as boobie is in there with parker, lebron has to be in to run point forward, along with some ball-handling help from boobie and parker.

if delonte can't return for some reason, we need a backup pg. if he can return, then we'll be fine. maybe that's what ferry is thinking about waiting on these free agents? see what happens with delonte first.

Rabman, you really need to cut down on the awesome posts. Seriously now.

this charts shows how huge delonte is to our success. if Boobie is replaced by delonte in all but 2 or 3 minutes of that chart i'd feel much better.

Maybe, we'll see delonte close out the half against Boston on Tuesday (last 4:30 on your charts) with the starters rather than Gibson and Mo. If he's ready of course, but it would be nice to work him in with the starters to get comfortable again.

Nice post Rabman.

I feel like Rabman is going to challenge Wine and Gold for most thanks in a post sometime.

Brown uncertain about his rotation

Brown still revising Cavs' roster rotation
By Jodie Valade October 23, 2009, 9:32PM

CLEVELAND -- Three days before the Cavaliers play their first game of the regular season, Mike Brown is still thinking, still tinkering, still making lists.

The other day, the Cavaliers head coach wrote down about five or six different "minutes sheets," his plan for how much time each player will receive in games. He concocted some rotations using eight players. He had others using 10.

Usually, by the start of the season, Brown knows exactly how much court time he wants for each player. But this season?

"The reality of it is, I'm still not sure," Brown said Friday. "Whether it's because of sickness or injuries or whatever, I'm still not sure what I'm going to do rotation-wise. We'll experiment for a while."

Beyond a starting five that certainly includes LeBron James and Shaquille O'Neal, the Cavaliers' rotation remains in flux. The backup point guard position, in particular, has as many as four possibilities -- but no clear answer.

Daniel Gibson has made a case for playing time at that slot, even if shooting guard is a more natural position for the fourth-year guard.

On a team that has James, who is just as apt to bring the ball up the court as any guard, running the show isn't always a necessary skill for a point. Scoring is just as important, and Gibson did fine with that part in the preseason, knocking in 40 percent of his 3-point attempts and averaging 9.5 points in 24.5 minutes.

The early accuracy is a result of doing exactly nothing in the off-season -- rest that was needed after suffering with a painful toe injury all last season.

"That's really been the whole thing with me," Gibson said. "Last year my feet were messed up. It made it harder to do anything. Being a smaller guard, I need all my legs to shoot."

This preseason, he missed two games with a bruised tailbone, but proclaimed himself healthy Friday. That means he's the automatic backup to starting point guard Mo Williams, particularly if Delonte West is not available to play against the Celtics on Tuesday.

Brown said he still is not sure of the status of West, one of last season's starting guards, as he battles personal issues. West was at practice Friday, and coaches and players are hopeful he will be cleared by General Manager Danny Ferry to play in Tuesday's home opener against Boston, but nothing is certain.

"He's a huge part of our team," James said. "He's just as important as I am or Shaq is. He's a really, really big part of our team."

With West's return uncertain, though, Gibson will keep shooting -- even if that's not the primary definition of a point guard.

"He naturally scores the ball well," Brown said. "Usually it's harder to have that type of scorer on the point because you want the point to run your team and distribute the ball. But in the same breath, you know he can shoot the ball, so you want to try to give him some looks.

"At times, when you have a guy who is as talented a scorer as Daniel, you get caught in the in-between."

Re: Brown uncertain about his rotation

[Insert Cleveland Browns QB joke here]

Re: Brown uncertain about his rotation

I'm having a tough time figuring out what our eight man rotation would be, assuming that Delonte is part of it...

Mo, Parker/Delonte, LeBron, AV, Shaq as the starting five.

Then you have Parker/Delonte off the bench, Moon, and Z; that makes 8. But then that means Boobie gets 0 minutes and Delonte plays all of the backup PG minutes, and AV, LeBron, and Moon take all the PF minutes and most of the SF minutes (perhaps Parker would get a couple minutes at SF).

I think a 10 man rotation is much more likely, with those 8 plus JJ and Boobie. I fail to see how JJ doesn't get playing time with his performance in the preseason, and Boobie should see plenty of time with his ability to knock down 3's with LeBron and Shaq demanding double teams in most situations.

What will be interesting is to see how Powe is inserted into the lineup if JJ is playing well and not making many mistakes.

Re: Brown uncertain about his rotation

I don't think we're coming out of training camp nearly as prepared as we have been in past seasons. Not even as well as we were two seasons ago, when we had our poorest training camp up til that point, of the Mike Brown era.

Lots of contributing factors. From Delonte, to having numerous players coming down with the flu bug, to having new pieces that the head coach hasn't really fast tracked into a team system.

Not overly pleased with some areas of the team, particularly team defense. Seems very poor at this point.

Hope my feeling aren't indicative of a slow start out of the gate this year, but I have a feeling we will have some rocky areas that need addressed befoe we hit a positive stride.

Just no real sense of urgency exists with this team, at this point in terms of getting ready to hit the road running when the season starts.

Re: Brown uncertain about his rotation

If Delonte is out, a 9 man rotation seems pretty likely to me:

Mo, Parker, LBJ, AV, Shaq as starters; Z, Boobie, Moon, and JJ off the bench.
