Regardless of what the Cavs do in the playoffs this year, they will have some rather insignificant - yet important decisions to make in the off-season. We all know about Anderson Varejao and his contract. He will opt out and the first big decision is figuring out how to keep Andy long term. Its hard to tell what kind of contract it will take to keep him considering the economy, limited buyers, and teams wanting to wait for 2010 to make a splash. Hopefully Ferry and Dan Fegan (Andy's agent) can work out a deal that will keep him here for 3-5 years.

The Cavs can use the mid-level exception (roughly $5.5 million) and bi-annual exception (roughly $2 million) to entice an unrestricted free agent out on the market. The Jason Kidd rumors in the Plain Dealer is an interesting one. Kidd would be taking a 75% pay cut and come off the bench, but he apparently sounds somewhat interested. Kidd has yet to win a championship (went to the Finals twice) and we know that at his age that winning will be his main focus. The guy has made more than enough money and should be fine with the MLE. Besides, nobody is going to offer this guy a multi-year contract for $10 million a year or anything.

How would Kidd fit on the Cavs? That would remain to be seen. But he would be maybe the top point guard off the bench in the NBA.

Another guard who I think would love to take the MLE (and could even take the bi-annual) is Flip Murray. The former Cav is having a very solid season with the Hawks. He is only making 1.5 million this year, so either of these exceptions would be a raise. Flip would be that first guard off the bench that could play either the '1' or '2.' Flip is a much more productive and consistent insurance policy to fill in for Mo/Delonte than Sasha or Boobie.

The Cavs have two big men (Andy and Joe) in their regular rotation that will be free agents. The Cavs could use one of the exceptions to keep Smith around for another season. If they lose out on Andy, using one of these exceptions for a big man is a MUST! If they keep Andy and Smith goes elsewhere, it would be nice to get another big so Hickson/Darnell Jackson aren't forced to be the 4th big man next year. Some bigs that I would consider throwing one of the exceptions at are Chris Andersen or Antonio McDyess.

In my perfect Cavs world, the Cavs would resign Varejao, draft a big guard, and use the exceptions to get a solid guard off the bench (either Flip or Kidd) and another big man (Smith, Andersen, or McDyess).

-Re-sign Anderson Varejao.

-Re-sign Joe Smith.

-Draft Jermaine Taylor (UCF).

I want to bring Andy back, see what's happening with Wally and especially Joe Smith, and then if he's interested add Kidd for cheap. After that either make a trade or focus on the draft.

Too bad we'll get the last pick. :king:

Keep Anderson. Thats all I can think about right now.

He has skyrocketed his value during Ben's absence.

Between he and Joe, Fegan is licking his chops.

Here are some of the other front court free agents that will likely be on the market next summer. Some of these guys will be available on the cheap if the Cavs lose Andy or Joe Smith.

Aaron Gray
Brandon Bass
Carlos Boozer
Channing Frye
Chris Wilcox
David Lee
Drew Gooden
Glen Davis
Hakim Warrick
Johan Petro
Lamar Odom
LaMarcus Aldridge
Linas Kleiza
Marcin Gortat
Marvin Williams
Melvin Ely
Patrick O'Bryant
Pops Mensah-Bonsu
Radoslav Nesterovic
Rasheed Wallace
Ryan Hollins
Shawn Marion
Shelden Williams
Walter Herrmann
Zaza Pachulia

Ofcourse resign Anderson. Wally should be a given since we have his birds rights and i dont think he will cost that much. Joe will take the mle to resign, I would love him here, but not sure if he stays. An interesting aspect of this summer will be the virtuallye xpiring contract of Sasha. If we resing wally, and keep terrence,...sasha is not needed. He can bring back a player making as much as $6.25 million and offer immediate cap and luxury tax relief since his contract is only gurnunteed for a million. Last year, denver got rid of camby to save such money. Not sue who we could get.

As far as Kidd goes, if he wants to come here, he can play for the bi-anual. We need to use our mle to attract a 4 or a 5...preferebly someone that can play 5. Darko might unfortunetely be the most realisic option out there. I also would like to see about drafting a legit center with our first round pick this year.

Sum it up:

Keep wally and Av with birds right

sign Kidd with Bi-anual and Darko with mle (or any modereately talented player that can play center)

Trade pavs for ? and keep TK

Sign center with 1st round pick and any tallent we can find with 2nd.

I liked Flip when he was with the Cavs but he often disappears or over dribbles in 1/2 court sets. The Pistons regretted signing him for that exact reason. The Cavs had the ability to make him an offer before and decided against it. I don't think that decision has changed.

From those on Douglar's list there are 3 names that stand out more to me. I'd prefer to add a player with some size who can play minutes at C.
Channing Frye would bring a big who has solid shooting range. He is a little soft as a player but there is a need for another skilled big man.

Zaza Pachulia would bring a true C who's still young. I doubt he would sign here though. He seems to always play pretty solid against the Cavs and is someone who will play physical inside.

Marcin Gortat is kind of a sleeper. I think someone will make him a decent offer. When given minutes he usually puts up soild numbers.

Darko Milicic is still under contract for next season and will make $7.5 million. I have far less interest in him than I used to. I have seen very little growth or improvement in his game and he's now completing his 6th season in the NBA.

Darko's not a FA.. but like the general idea. It also might be hard to get a center with our pick.

Bosh trade, re sign AV, sign Kidd, championship.

Since 2006, Flip Murray has played with four teams. The only team he struggled to get effective offensive production was with Detroit. I think Flip would fit in well on this team. We have shooters, Flip's ability to get in the lane and finish is better than any guard on the Cavs. As I mentioned before, he would be a great 3rd guard and could fill in effectively if either Mo or Delonte went down. If we could get Flip with the bi-annual exception, I would hope Ferry would be all about it.

Wine and GOld mentioned us looking at a more defensive orientated center. But Channing Frye would be my number 1 on that list. Not sure whether he can be a full-time starter at center in the future or not, but hes talented and would be in a much better situation here than behind Oden and Aldridge.

Brandon Bass

Bass reminds me of a larger Leon Powe and I have thought for many years now that is what the Cavs need. A big body who is just looking to dunk. Period. Someone like Bass is a mediocre player on many teams but he could be even more valuable to us than Powe is to the Celtics - and anyone who's seen a Celtics' game knows how good they can be when Powe is muscling around down there...

JJ could turn into this type but with a reliable jumpshot, but it all depends on JJ's fate with us this offseason.

EDIT: Seriously if you type in "Brandon Bass" on GoogleImages all you get is pics of him dunking, after you get passed all the male body builders named Brandon Bass - and there's alot.
