Regardless of what the Cavs do in the playoffs this year, they will have some rather insignificant - yet important decisions to make in the off-season. We all know about Anderson Varejao and his contract. He will opt out and the first big decision is figuring out how to keep Andy long term. Its hard to tell what kind of contract it will take to keep him considering the economy, limited buyers, and teams wanting to wait for 2010 to make a splash. Hopefully Ferry and Dan Fegan (Andy's agent) can work out a deal that will keep him here for 3-5 years.
The Cavs can use the mid-level exception (roughly $5.5 million) and bi-annual exception (roughly $2 million) to entice an unrestricted free agent out on the market. The Jason Kidd rumors in the Plain Dealer is an interesting one. Kidd would be taking a 75% pay cut and come off the bench, but he apparently sounds somewhat interested. Kidd has yet to win a championship (went to the Finals twice) and we know that at his age that winning will be his main focus. The guy has made more than enough money and should be fine with the MLE. Besides, nobody is going to offer this guy a multi-year contract for $10 million a year or anything.
How would Kidd fit on the Cavs? That would remain to be seen. But he would be maybe the top point guard off the bench in the NBA.
Another guard who I think would love to take the MLE (and could even take the bi-annual) is Flip Murray. The former Cav is having a very solid season with the Hawks. He is only making 1.5 million this year, so either of these exceptions would be a raise. Flip would be that first guard off the bench that could play either the '1' or '2.' Flip is a much more productive and consistent insurance policy to fill in for Mo/Delonte than Sasha or Boobie.
The Cavs have two big men (Andy and Joe) in their regular rotation that will be free agents. The Cavs could use one of the exceptions to keep Smith around for another season. If they lose out on Andy, using one of these exceptions for a big man is a MUST! If they keep Andy and Smith goes elsewhere, it would be nice to get another big so Hickson/Darnell Jackson aren't forced to be the 4th big man next year. Some bigs that I would consider throwing one of the exceptions at are Chris Andersen or Antonio McDyess.
In my perfect Cavs world, the Cavs would resign Varejao, draft a big guard, and use the exceptions to get a solid guard off the bench (either Flip or Kidd) and another big man (Smith, Andersen, or McDyess).
