I did get a chance to see the summer league game last night. I just had a few comments. Danny Green has a pretty nice spot up game. Plus, he looks to be a solid defender as well. It is still to be determined if he is athletic enough to create his own shots. He'll need to do that if he wants to be anything more than a bit player. Unlike JJ, Green has a good work ethic and solid BB IQ. I think he'll pick up the system quickly. I could see him contributing as a role player this coming season.
As for Eyenga, it was pretty grim. He truly is a project. Ball Handling, Decision making, Jump Shot, it all needs work. Frankly, I just can't see him ever amounting to anything in the NBA. Basketball is a tough game at the elite level. It takes a lot more than raw athleticism to make it. It is safe to say that he'll be stashed away in Europe for at least 2 years. It really would be interesting to know who in the Cavs organization pushed for this guy. Was he really the target for them? Or, did they just grab him as a fallback knowing he could be stashed away? Who scouted this guy? The answers to those questions would be quite interesting.
I didn't see the game, but are you seriously gonna judge a 20 year old kid (probably nervous as hell) based on his first summer league game? Give him a chance. The summer league is about development...it's not supposed to be pretty.
Can the Cavs let Eyenga play in the D-League without signing him to his rookie contract? I know W&G posted shortly after the draft that he was gonna lobby to keep Eyenga in Erie, close to Cavs brass so they can effectively monitor his progress.
The Cavs can do that, but I don't see Eyenga's agent advising him to do that. The D-league pay is really low. He could make 10 times as much money in Europe.
The D-League pay scale is broken down into three segments.
- The "C" level players make between $12,500 and $14,000.
- The "B" level players make between $18,000 and $20,000.
- The "A" level players make between $24,000 and $26,000.
