- Haha, Olivier was in full force, practicing for the Q.
- Anthony Parker looks like he had a sweet stroke going. I loved his pump fake to get a bird, and then he knocks one down for 2.
- That put back dunk by Danny Green was sick.
- Nice oop by Boobie to JJ.
- LOL at Andy and Boobie at the end.

Shaq's Gold squad outshines LeBron's
By Brian Windhorst

This round of "Shaq Vs." was unofficial, but he did finally get a win. The opponent happened to be LeBron James, but James didn't mind.

Shaquille O'Neal was the highlight of the annual Wine and Gold Scrimmage on Saturday afternoon at a packed Rhodes Arena at the University of Akron. Fans who started lining up two hours before tipoff, a line that eventually stretched several hundred yards, gave O'Neal a standing ovation when he came on the floor for warm-ups.

He responded by delivering a crisp and agile performance along with most of his teammates. O'Neal made 6 of 8 shots and led all scorers with 12 points as his Gold team beat James' Wine team, 54-38. O'Neal moved well, showing he's in good shape. At one point he even finished a fast break with a layup.

"They weren't doubling me and I'm only shooting 60 percent lifetime," O'Neal joked. "So I'm just taking my time."

James looked a little rusty, especially shooting the ball. He made just 4 of 12 shots and 2 of 7 free throws to finish with 10 points. He also didn't have an assist, a true rarity, in 18 minutes on the floor. But with O'Neal playing so well, James wasn't concerned at all about himself.

"We've still got some work to do, it is still early," James said. "He's doing a great job. He's in shape, he looks great, he's getting up and down the court and he's playing defense. That's what we got him for."

Here are some other things that were seen in the 32-minute game:

•The Cavs were certainly showing some effort in starting the offense with James off the ball. In the first five possessions alone, James posted up twice and another time caught an entry pass off a screen on the other side of the floor. Several times he also looked to post up when moving in transition. James said he's been working at his post game and the Cavs are obviously focusing on putting plays in for it.

•One interesting change is the way the Cavs appear to play defending side pick-and-roll plays. Last season this became an issue in the playoffs against the Orlando Magic when Hedo Turkoglu and Dwight Howard ran them repeatedly. In the scrimmage on those plays the Cavs were forcing the screen setter toward the baseline, which is an option they didn't use much last season. If executed properly it can make it harder to execute the play.

It was clear this has been a point of emphasis in practice. The offenses also ran a bunch of side pick-and-rolls to let the defenses work on it.

•Rookie Danny Green and second-year forward J.J. Hickson both were impressive. Hickson was aggressive in going to the basket, scoring 11 points with five rebounds. Green scored 10 points, though he took 11 shots, but was active and playing with confidence at both ends of the floor.

•Free agent pickups Jamario Moon and Anthony Parker each played reasonably well. Parker didn't shoot the ball effectively but had five assists and two steals while playing good defense. Moon had nine points, five rebounds and three steals plus two thunderous dunks in transition. Zydrunas Ilgauskas was also smooth, scoring six points with eight rebounds.

•Mo Williams did not play because of a mildly strained groin. He has not missed any practice time and the team held him out mostly for precaution.

All-in-all, it was a positive experience for the team.

"First thing in winning a championship is belief," O'Neal said. "And everyone knows we were one piece away last year from getting it done. Now that piece is here so everyone has that belief and the team has that belief."

Re: Wine and Gold Scrimmage this year?

Danny Ferry quote: "I don't know that it was the right time for him to come," said Ferry, who deferred comment about West's situation for several days.

If the first two days of camp weren't the right time for West to come in then why did they continually call his absence unexcused?

Probably trying to teach a little bit of a lesson. The front office doesn't want this to become a re-occurring theme with Delonte (year after year), so maybe if he gets fined this year, then next offseason he'll make sure he's doing what he's supposed to be doing and be able to come to camp on time and without and controversy.

Touch and go situation would be my guess. Also, still keeps that whole accountability thing in perspective. They probably figured it wasn't right for Delonte after the fact. Walkin that line.

That doesnt make sense. How can you teach someone with a chronic mental illness a lesson? His fine will be a couple of thousand. That's nothing. I find that statement by Ferry an admission that the team mishandled that situation.

He will always have problems. The drugs dont stop everything. Stable isnt cured.

Erring on the side of caution? Maybe the doctor he's seeing suggested limited exposure to the media would be in Delonte's best interest ...

Re: Wine and Gold Scrimmage this year?

Looks like Anthony Parker is gonna be our starting SG, I wouldn't be surprise if he actually is. He is one of the best spot-up shooters in league, it's not that often you see him miss a wide open 3-pointer.

Re: Wine and Gold Scrimmage this year?

I guess we will have a better perspective on the situation Tuesday night.
Let's see if Delonte will be with the team then.
If so, will he start? come off the bench? Or be a DNP - Coaches Decision, DND.

I wouldn't be surprised if was more of a message to the team as a whole, not just to Delonte. In the mold of Ferry telling West "If you need time, take time, but you're still going to be held to the fine schedule."

So, the absence was 'accepted and understood', but not 'excused' from the usual consequences.

Re: Wine and Gold Scrimmage this year?

This team has me more hyped than any Cleveland team since the 97 Indians.

Delonte West works out as team plays scrimmage
By Brian Windhorst

As they try to analyze what happened with Delonte West last week, without going into details the Cavaliers have concluded West wasn't ready to begin training camp when the rest of his teammates were.

That sounds vague, and that is the point. The team is obviously being careful what it says publicly about West, in addition to protecting him. It explains why there was another West absence Saturday at the Wine and Gold Scrimmage at the University of Akron. This time, however, he was excused.

Instead, West stayed at Cleveland Clinic Courts and had a private workout.

"I made the decision not to rush things and be patient," Cavs General Manager Danny Ferry said, talking about West's troubles over the last week for the first time.

"From a basketball perspective, getting him in shape and ready to roll is very important. I think that was probably the right step for him today. I think he's going in the right direction."

Though he said he's spent quite a bit of time talking to West this week, Ferry declined to discuss what kept the guard from making the team's first four practices of training camp. However, those absences remain unexcused and West is in line for a hefty fine from the team.

"I don't know if [last Tuesday] was the right time for him to come," Ferry said. "We've communicated a lot over the last couple days and I think things are going in a positive direction."

There is no doubt Ferry and the rest of the organization is in a tough spot. Ferry carefully chose his words in front of six television cameras and dozens of other journalists following the scrimmage.

West suffers from bipolar disorder and during the summer he said he was sometimes off his medication. That may have led to his arrest on gun charges last month. Ferry said West was getting treatment for the condition but also didn't completely dismiss West from blame.

"It is important for every player in this organization to see that we'll help and give the resources to get them better on and off the court and that's the approach we are taking with Delonte," Ferry said. "Along the same path, there has to be a level of accountability, there's going to be ups and downs with that for sure."
The team isn't making final plans, but West will likely practice Sunday and Monday. If things go well those two days there is an expectation that he could play in Tuesday's preseason opener against the Charlotte Bobcats at The Q.

Re: Wine and Gold Scrimmage this year?

Personally, I don't think West will be with the Cavs by the time the playoffs roll around.

I don't have no reason for thinking this....just a "gut" feeling.

I don't know about that. If he was on his was out, he's be out already. I see nothing but support from the Cavs organization, and they are willing to help rather than just put him to the side and leave him to fend for himself. The thing about depression is that you can't get over it yourself. Loneliness is your worst enemy and Ferry seems to understand that.

Why was Lebron wearing 6 at the scrimmage?
