2016-2017 Indians Off-Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
O'Flaherty already re-signed with Atlanta.

What are the chances he actually sticks on the 25 man roster all year for Baltimore?

It is injuries that stopped him from progressing in the minors, and last season was the first time he was healthy all season. He hit 20 HRs in 128 games so he has some pop and started to play some 1B as well, but I am thinking that was the Indians testing him in other positions. I would honestly say it is on the slim side, but sometimes people do well when given the change and he always hit well when healthy. Tony Wolters last year we tried to waive and he ended up sticking in colorado even though he didn't play above AA, so we never know until the at bats.

I am honestly surprised we lost a position player and not a pitcher in the Rule 5 since we have some fairly good RHP in the minors who were Rule 5 eligible, but the Yankees actually lost 4 players to the rule 5 and I am not sure if I have seen that before to be honest especially from a weaker from system

I wasn't actually referring to getting him, just a player like that who is trying to revive his career and those are the guys we often sign in the offseason, though outside of bringing in veteran relievers, I don't see use doing a whole lot of minor league deals.

Depends on what they do with the rest of the off-season.

Right now they're in on guys like Dyson, but they only have three guys as locks for the outfield in Jones, Kim and Rickard.

That's a large jump, I wouldn't expect him to stick but you never know.

Yeah, I'm very aware of Santander's development and production due to the contributions of @BimboColesHair and @AZ_ in our minor league thread in addition to my own research. It's just odd to pluck a hitter from A+. This isn't really a Wolters situation where his value is in the field, so it doesn't matter if he hits. Santander's value is all at the plate, and it seems unlikely that he's prepared the succeed at the major league level given his experience.

I am surprised that Santander got taken in the Rule 5 since he has never played above A ball. I cannot find a whole lot on Hoby Milner when it comes to his actually pitching ability. He was a converted starter in the minors and got his first set of innings last season at AAA, so I am wondering what they see in him. He will be competing with Crockett, Cooney (if healthy) and Escobar for the last spot in the bullpen.

Yea not really any Phillies forums that are saying much just that he seemed to find something late last season at AA

Milner dropped down to a low sidearm angle as a reliever, where he found a lot more success missing bats. Any scouting report you find on him before 2016 is going to be outdated given his overhaul.

Seems like he's really taken well to the bullpen. His K9 jumped to 10.9 and based in the video it's turned that slurve into a workable pitch along with his changeup.

Tough road for him to stick, because he just doesn't throw hard at all. He's basically Randy Choate, a guy who needs to be pinpoint in order to get big league hitters out since he's only going to work the fastball at 87-88.

Just browsing stats after seeing the selection, the K/9 bump was the first thing that jumped out at me. Given it was likely the result of him dropping his release point, I'm interested to see if he can actually contribute this year. It'd be really nice to find a second lefty for that pen.

I have a soft spot for Kyle Crockett, so I hope his 2nd half carries over, and he can be that guy. Really though, I just hope we can find somebody for that role to take some of the workload off Andrew Miller.

I was wondering about that one since i saw pictures of both the higher and the lower slot. I would think that Callaway and Francona saw something in him hence why they took him and Crockett only throws 90-91 on his best days. Also his new release point and action is fairly similar to Crocketts as well. He did essentially what Joe Smith we had for a few years did. He lowered his release point to try and extend his career and it worked for him. I am thinking that his velocity though may go up a little more in due time, but not a whole lot. We shall see once spring training starts.

The issue is with this site his mechanics have been completely overhauled so some of the information is usable while the rest is not. Also I haven't seen the Indians in awhile take a guy in Rule 5 (which is a bit surprising in my mind) So this is a surprised we actually picked someone up. I am thinking the changed mechanics is what could possibly make it stick in the pros.

God. Fucking. Dammit.

It's a good thing we kept Michael Martinez on the 40 man an extra day though!

LOL

Am i the only person questioning with Aguilar, Almonte and Baker are still on the 40 man roster? I would rather see guys like Jeff Johnson and Yandy Diaz on it.

Why is it a questionable decision that Almonte is on the 40 man? As we stand right now, he's in line to have a fairly large role next year...wouldn't make any sense to DFA him.

And who cares if Diaz isn't on the 40 man. He's still protected from the draft and he'll be on it when he gets the call...weird thing to be questioning...

And if you want to know how big league teams feel about Jeff Johnson, take a look at how high he went in the Rule 5 today as an unprotected player...oh, wait...his splitter is his only MLB caliber pitch IMO. Not to mention the questions with his health/size.

The bad one to me was Martinez. Clear as day he was going to get non-tendered, cause he isn't worth 600K. They did the right thing with Gimenez and got him off the roster to protect Mejia...but I still don't know why we kept him on the 40 man through the deadline to protect eligible players...was a questionable decision then, it looks like a terrible decision now...

Don't get Aguilar or Baker, but Almonte actually was solid last year. I'd like to keep him on the roster.

Baker was put on the 40 man before his recent injury. Guy absolutely has MLB reliever ready stuff, but has a geriatric league body...it only looks bad because he got hurt again.

And people view the 40 man as only pertaining to the MLB roster...Aguilar is as good of MILB depth as you will find throughout baseball...that's why he is on the 40 man.

Only one that is blatantly bad was Martinez, because it was clear his contract was getting severed.

I am not overly fond of Almonte and if we bring back Rajai Davis (which i think we should do) he may end up being the odd man out, it would be him or Naquin who would be. Diaz to be should be on the big league club since I feel his bat is major league ready, but I guess I am one of the few who feel that way, lol

Jeff Johnson has been really good in the minors the last few seasons, and I think he will get a shot to get the last spot in the bullpen since Manship was released. Josh Martin is another guy who will be competing for a spot as well. The guy who went in the Rule 5 draft for the Indians I don't think anyone would have expected to be so you never know what the teams are thinking.

I am sure Gimenez was offered a minor league deal by the Indians so you never know if he doesn't sign elsewhere he could be back with us. I am wondering if they kept him so long since they were trying to make a deal for a player. I am still not ruling out a trade for a starting 1st/CF if we don't find anyone in free agency. I am not sold on Naquin
