2019 Browns Head Coach Candidates

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I actually had my initial statement backwards.

Meant to say Marty Hurney and not Dave Gettleman, whom replaced Gettleman when Carolina let him go.

Gettleman is fine as a GM candidate.

Marty Hurney owns one of the two sports radio stations in Charlotte, and was a regular host. Man, his football analysis was terrible. No hyperbole.....it was just so mundane, non-insightful, and overall, just awful to listen to. When I heard he got the "temporary" GM gig I literally LOL'd.

Let's take a step back then. It seems people are arguing against retreads, correct? If there is a different thesis, I'd like a specific statement people stand for rather than general bitching. I can understand a specific thesis.

If the argument is against retreads, I agree to a certain degree. Norv Turner as an OC had his last truly great coaching year carrying an average Miami offense in 2003, yet he is getting another chance.

At the same time, are you keeping track of all the young position coaches who get promoted to OC and aren't ready? It would be a long list, including Zampese in Cincy and Downing in Oakland. Sometimes they grow into the new role, sometimes no.

If you look at the success rate of college coaches getting a pro job, they usually spend a year as a position coach before getting playcalling or coordinator duties. That is because the speed and size of NFL defenses is such a huge leap from college to the pros. Members have explained the vast difference between the college game before - wider hash marks, larger rosters, grown men instead of college kids, etc.

My argument isn’t about one general specific, it’s coaches or front office men who aren’t good that keep getting the nod because of experience or things they did a decade or more in the past.

The same rings true for the college game.

The guys with the most success employ the leadership traits which stay constant throughout time, combined with the ability to be innovative and perceptive of the game around them.

There is so much coaching turnover because of those two main factors. Sometimes it’s obvious to spot, other times not so much.

But it’s becoming easier given the way we all consume information.

Bill Polian-esque

Why is Chris Tabor still here?

Why is Chris Tabor still here?
Am asking the same thing... he's like a cockoach, survivor of so many fo and coaching regimes, I don't get it because the last few years tge special teams has been bad...

To add on to the innovation, it's pretty much the opposite of basketball in that college football is where all the tactical breakthroughs are occuring before slowly being disseminated into the NFL. Andy Reid revolutionized the KC offense based on college spread concepts this year and as soon as week 2 Belichick was ripping some of their plays off.

I absolutely agree with the good old boys club that follows a lot/most NFL hires, I wish the league as a whole was just more receptive to new ideas.

Norv Turner will always do things Norv Turner's way, regardless of personnel. Guy was running 7 step drops with Glass Cannon Bradford last year while the entire starting offensive line was out. Can't stand coaches who don't adjust to their personnel.

And all this does is make me excited to see Teddy when he isn't held back by an outdated scheme with an outdated RB behind him.

People are always fighting the last war.

Except the handful of weirdos everyone shuns until they shock the world. Bill was that guy in the early 2000s.

How often is it stubbornness vs sheer inability?

Norv's interview:

HC : We have different players -- more speed than strength/technique; what are some ways you can adapt?

Norv: I offered that some thought and I didn't come up with much so I'd rather just stick to what I have.

HC: I need a straight shooter on my staff. Welcome aboard.

How do these things go man?

The very reason he's not firing Hue is because he admitted he didn't want to pay a coach not to coach. He's being more tight with his money in that realm.
So following up on this

We sure are hiring a lot of high profile front office guys to long term contracts that we clearly don’t have to hire or could easily cost cut on. for a team that isn’t getting rid of Hue because they don’t want to pay another coach that seems odd

OBR should not be confused for a source

Just creating depth.

Saves time. Once Dorsey is fired in two years they won't have to waste time looking for replacements.
