Rookie cornerback Greedy Williams made the play of the day Friday.
Late in practice during an 11-on-11 red zone drill, Williams went up and intercepted a Baker Mayfield pass intended for Odell Beckham Jr. in the right corner of the end zone.
Williams screamed and threw the ball in the air in celebration as he jumped up after rolling out of bounds, which wasn’t exactly what head coach Freddie Kitchens wanted to see after a big play.
“It was a nice play but I think we need to learn what were going to do with the ball after an interception,” Kitchens said.
Kitchens later clarified that he was somewhat joking with that comment because the interception was in the end zone, but had it been in the field of play Kitchens wants to be sure such a celebration doesn’t draw a penalty.
Williams originally was covering Jarvis Landry but recognized Mayfield was throwing deeper and he dropped to help fellow rookie Sheldrick Redwine, tasked with covering Beckham, who was running an out five yards deep in the end zone.
Williams has worked mostly with the second-team defense through two practices in camp but the ability to get his hands on footballs is hard to miss.
Pitch counts – Kitchens is being careful early in camp not to overextend players too much.
Case in point: receiver Jarvis Landry. Although Landry participated fully in practice, his reps were dialed back after he spent most of the spring dealing with a minor unspecified injury that kept him out of OTAs and the June minicamp.
Landry caught a touchdown from Mayfield in a red zone drill.
Kitchens cited data from the NFL that shows players are most susceptible to soft-tissue injuries in the first eight days of training camp.
RG shuffle – Kyle Kalis, the St. Eds product, took the first-team snaps at right guard Friday and Austin Corbett, who was with the ones Thursday, handled the backup center duties with the twos.
Eric Kush was at right guard with the twos.
When will Kitchens decide who wins the job?
“I do not know. I can’t answer that,” Kitchens responded. “I know the pads go on tomorrow. We will gather and continue to gather information, continue to evaluate and continue to try to get everybody up front better and we will see who comes out of it then.”
Just for kicks – The first real competition between kickers Greg Joseph and Austin Seibert of camp took place Friday.
Joseph went 4-4 hitting from 34, 41, 48 and 51.
Seibert was good from 34, missed from 41, banked in a 48-yarder off the left upright and he was also good from 51.
Many returns – The kick return rotation looked like this on Friday – D’Ernest Johnson, Dontrell Hilliard and Duke Johnson Jr.
Red zone threats – David Njoku caught a pair of touchdowns in a 7-on-7 red zone drill from Mayfield and Seth DeValve hauled in a pair from Drew Stanton in the same session.
Gasser for the D – Kitchens held a one-play competition to end practice – offense v. defense with gassers on the line.
“I will set it up when I see fit,” Kitchens said. “Whether it be an everyday thing, I do not know. When we get these pads on, some of that competition is going to take care of itself.”
Mayfield found Njoku in the end zone for a touchdown forcing the defense to run a pair of gassers after practice.
Americas team – The Browns popularity nationwide is starting to ramp up.
One sign of that, from Thursday into Friday, only 16 percent of the team’s content views on YouTube were from Ohio.
Puppy pound counter – Five puppies were adopted Friday and nine through two practices. The partnership with the Northeast Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is in its fifth year and since its inception in 2015 has seen a total of 369 puppies find homes during Browns training camps.
Injury report – RB Trayone Gray (calf-NFI) and RB Kareem Hunt (groin-NFI), WR Damion Ratley (right hamstring).
“Ratley had a little setback,” Kitchens said. “But he’ll be fine.”
Notable quotable – “We will have some tackling; I do not know if we will go to the ground. Our running backs will get hit. Our quarterbacks will not get hit, and if they do, then you see some more of that running,” Kitchens on Saturday's first practice in pads.
Up next – Practice Saturday 10 a.m.-noon, the first in full pads of camp.
The team will also hold its annual First and Ten Blood Drive at 12 sites across Northern Ohio to benefit the American Red Cross.
