2019 Cleveland Browns Training Camp

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Just to throw a dash of negativity in with all the fawning over this team's talent:

I hope the coaching staff identifies who the best RG is quickly.

Rotating through like this to give each guy a fair chance sucks. When you're on the OL, every day that's a "tryout" like this is basically a wasted day in terms of practice. You're not working with your A-Team. You can't build chemistry and communication. It's frustrating.

James Campen knows what he is doing. My guess is that he wants all three guys comfortable if an injury hits the three interior starters during the course of the season.

Sounds like TJ Carrie was really good today too

I'm going to preface this entire discussion with I don't feel there are any problems--yet. But since there's nothing substantial to talk about, let's discuss items that could turn into problems down the road.

I'm not saying you're doing it, but dismissing any questions about the way our offensive line is being handled by waving your hand and saying Campen knows what he's doing is an appeal to authority. Going off track record (because we don't have much else), Campen is one of the better offensive line coaches in the league. But, as we all know, that doesn't mean he's infallible, and it doesn't mean he's going to be perfect in all aspects.

With regards to an injury, I think you can change "if" to "when." Injuries are going to happen and a team needs to be ready for when they do occur.

But, what scenario leads to a more able line:

  1. Setting your line early, letting those 5 starters build chemistry, build communication, and figure out what they need to do. Then, the backups know exactly what they need to learn, what the communication and calls are, and how to fit in when an injury strikes
  2. Having an extended tryout that doesn't allow your 5 starters to settle into their groove until much later. While the backups may have sat in on the first team reps, those reps were early on before the line found their comfort area.
Personally, I see more value in option 1. When I was in scenarios like this, every day with your non-competitive lineup felt like a wasted day of practice.
