2019 Draft, Pick #30 - Kevin Porter Jr., USC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I liked his defense and that wrap around pass.

His isos inside the arc with the sole intention of scoring the ball is no bueno. The difference between Doncic/Harden isos and Porters is that both of them are distributors and good 3pt shooters off the dribble and they use tht kind of gravity to create for others. Porter has a long way to go, but he can not iso with the sole intention of scoring, especially if he isn't a good 3pt shooter yet.

Need to get Clarkson off the team asap, and try to make Porter some kind of PnR BH and distributor and ball mover out of isos. He can not be the last stop even if his teammates suck.
Very quick feet on defense. Looks like he can get to where he wants to go on offense and get his shot off; they just didn't fall for him last night. Can't tell much from 17 minutes, though, but his upside seems high. I wonder if his minutes will be cut when Windler comes back.

I would expect that to happen... 3 pt shooting has premium value for Beilein and this team lacks consistent long range shooting... He'll probably get more burn once Chucky McWolf is traded or bought out...

So far I like that he looks like a willing defender... He is athletic so he could be a good defender if he puts time and effort to it...

It's nice to have a player on the roster who is not at a constant size/length/athleticism disadvantage for his position. He also seemed to be a willing defender, if not yet a good one. He obviously has a long way to go before he can become a productive NBA player just in terms of skill development, but at least the physical tools are there, which is more than can be said for about 75% of the roster.

Unfortunately, as long as Clarkson is on the roster and they're both coming off the bench, KPJ is going to be stunted. It may even be beneficial for him to get some run in the G league just to be able to have the ball in his hands a bunch and play a ton of minutes, but the Cavs are so bad that they actually need all the NBA bodies they can get.

Orlando is a really good defensive team. Built to make things tough defensively for a rookie like Porter who's very talented but still raw. Lots of length and ability to contest shots inside and out.

He's gonna be up and down throughout the year. I think it's important to stay even keeled on him somewhat. I truly believe he will score 25-30 and be absolutely unstoppable some nights .I also see some 0-6, 1-12, 3/14 type of games coming. I just hope there are claerly identifiable things he improved on over the year.

Don't see him scoring 30 until he becomes a better 3pt shooter. In this system anyways. I can't see it this year.

My problem with the situation is that he comes off the bench with ball hogs. The vets didn't even look in his direction last night.

Yeah I really wish we could just end Clarkson home. I don't see a single positive thing his presence brings to the team. Let Garland and Sexton get a lot of experience trying to see if they can make playing together work, and then let them both play with Delly so they can have their turns controlling the rock.

Trade away all veterans who we feel the need to give the ball to. I want Garland to have the keys to the car and maybe Sexton is his co-pilot. When Delly plays his job should be to get those guys going off the ball and some easy shots. I don't need Kevin Love or Jordan Clarkson or anyone else for that matter being an offensive focal point for any duration. Let the young kids play, learn, play through mistakes, coach em up. But those 2 guys clearly should be the focus of our organization going forward. Even if it;s determined that one needs to be traded(Sexton), you still have a 2nd or 3rd year kid who shows elite scoring capabilities but struggles with passing and defense...but is a willing worker with a good attitude and will try to fix mistakes. Turned from a mediocre in college to really good shooter in the NBA in his first year. That's impressive and greatly enhances his already strong scoring chops.

I'm sure there are a couple of coaches who think they could turn Sexton into something. If the Spurs weren't already committed to Murray plus they have White...I'd say thats a perfect Popovich guy.

Hell, maybe Dallas. Though not sure they have the assets. I think Sexton inserted as a scoring guard 2nd option behind an elite wing ball-handler like Luka Doncic with a big like Porzingis to protect the rim behind him and also switch on the perimeter...I actually think that's where Sexton's talents could be maximized under a guy like Rick Carlisle. But they already used a lot of draft capital to get Porzingis.

I still am giving Garland and Sexton as a pairing the entire year or a good portion of it. I have a hunch they end up at least working offensively.

He's a work in progress. He got fouled going to the basket, then started settling for jumpers, then seemed at the end of the game like he was desperate to score. I liked his aggressive defense and he didn't foul too much. He altered shots and he was in the right places. He could be a beast defensively.

He needs to go ahead and go to the basket when he beats his man. He let the defender catch up to him a couple of times so he could show off his footwork. Should have taken it strong to the basket instead. Beilein I am sure is going to try to keep him from over dribbling, but I have a feeling that is how he gets his rhythm. He needs to form new habits.

Got great separation at times and was engaged despite not being paid attention to by teammates.

Kid is miles away from being a good NBA player. Needs at least one full year in Canton.

I think last night kind of showed the limitation with trying to feed the ball to Love in the post and this roster construction. He just isn't dominate enough to take on double teams and consistently score. There also isn't another stretch big to give him space. Let Garland and Sexton run action for him and allow him to stretch the floor for others.

I also think people get caught up too much with how Sexton and Garland work together. At worse they can play 30 minutes each with a split of 18 minutes alone and 12 minutes together. I don't think they play so bad together that the coaching staff can't figure out 12 minutes of how they can share the floor effectively.

As Sexton gets better at being a PG it will only make him better playing with Garland. If anything, Garland has shown to this point that he isn't as willing to shoot the ball as one might think he would be. Creating plays where someone like Sexton sets Garland up to take catch and shoot 3s could move him along as a off ball scoring threat or scoring threat in general.

The biggest problem for rookies and young players is adjusting to the NBA speed. Sending him down to the G-league doesn't help that. Basically if they send him down to Canton while we have minutes for him to play with the Cavs, it's just wasted opportunities and time that would have been better spent running down that clock to get the game to slow down for him. Even if it's just him giving solid effort on defense it's better for him to be with the Cavs than going down to the G-league.
