2019 Draft, Pick #30 - Kevin Porter Jr., USC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The biggest problem for rookies and young players is adjusting to the NBA speed. Sending him down to the G-league doesn't help that. Basically if they send him down to Canton while we have minutes for him to play with the Cavs, it's just wasted opportunities and time that would have been better spent running down that clock to get the game to slow down for him. Even if it's just him giving solid effort on defense it's better for him to be with the Cavs than going down to the G-league.

Yeah, and putting the ball in his hands as the best player is moving away from how you want him to develop right now. You want him playing team ball and working within the system and learning from better players. Dominating the Gleague won't do much for him besides give him the green light for bad shots.

The problem with sending him to the gleague is that it seems that the Cavs doesn't have a good gleauge development system... Can't remember any of the Cavs young players who improved there, can argue they even regressed when sent there... If they have an system like toronto, would make a better sense

I really like how awkward his game is, he just moves differently from our other guards and wings, plus he's got really good size. He's kind of quick and slithery but he also has strength to finish through contact. I'm seeing a future with this trio of Porter, Garland and Sexton, I think they can have success together. They can all get buckets and they all have a distinctive style, plus they get to all play together so early in their careers, they'll be able to learn from each other as they get better and better. Should be fun to watch.

He was cool. Plenty to work on, but showed some very good defensive instincts and effort. He really does need to start more basic. Game needs to slow down before any of that fancy stuff will work, but damn that Euro step was sick.

He's the most raw, but he has incredible upside and is still growing. He may end up fitting in well at the 3, though that is for the future. He has a wingspan comparable to Jimmy Butler - already an inch longer and may grow a bit. He has the potential to be one of the better defenders in the NBA as he matures. He could really become a lockdown guy.

Have to get him to stop taking mid range jumpers. Much like with Sexton last year have him focus on threes (They will come with time) and driving to the bucket.

Easily his best game. His on ball defense is fantastic, long arms.. hard to dribble past and can block shots of those that do. Off the ball he falls asleep. He got a stop on Lauri in the post today... adding to Gordon and Bitadze. Not bad for a 6'4 guard/wing.

I like his potential, but there are some surprises playing very well from this draft. Tyler Herro starting and making some noise, Hachimura is actually carrying an otherwise trashfire washington team. I agree that edwards was a good deal as a second rounder. TBH he has always played above expectations, so I am not shocked or anything. This is a very productive draft class. I think some of its potential was hidden by the Zion freight train. Come christmas, it will be interesting to list the rooks who are playing with their respective advanced stats.

I may owe this kid an apology. Now that he is playing under some control, he looks like he might end up being a darn good player.

It’s early but he looks like he has potential to be a good defender. It’s less skill than effort and court awareness. He covers for our other guards’ mistakes by constantly following what is occurring on the court.

Upside is very promising. Think he should just be himself and whatever he turns into embrace it. He’s got offensive skill and good defensive size so if I were him I’d be looking at great 3 and D players for guidance because he’s got the tools to be one himself. Is he going to be Andre Iguadala? Probably not but he dies flash good scoring instincts to be more than a role guy. It’s on him
