The biggest problem for rookies and young players is adjusting to the NBA speed. Sending him down to the G-league doesn't help that. Basically if they send him down to Canton while we have minutes for him to play with the Cavs, it's just wasted opportunities and time that would have been better spent running down that clock to get the game to slow down for him. Even if it's just him giving solid effort on defense it's better for him to be with the Cavs than going down to the G-league.
Yeah, and putting the ball in his hands as the best player is moving away from how you want him to develop right now. You want him playing team ball and working within the system and learning from better players. Dominating the Gleague won't do much for him besides give him the green light for bad shots.
