2019 Draft, Pick #30 - Kevin Porter Jr., USC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Again JR Smith is a terrible comp. He literally has ZERO off the ball game. JR Smith made his career as a catch and shoot lighting bolt off the bench. In terms of ups and downs that could be similar. But it won't look anything like JR Smith scoring 50. Such a lazy comp man. Like in the other thread where someone said comparing Windler to a white guy just cause hes white, comparing KPJ to a guy with "attitude issues" just cause he has "attitude issues" is lazy.

Already better than Jr as a ball handler. He can definitely catch and shoot 3s tho.

He thinks he might be the best guy in the draft, that is a little scary. Love the potential tho

He can't catch and shoot 3s. He literally has no off the ball game. When he gets the ball he dribbles and does something then takes a shot. He does a couple dribbles/step backs what ever it is. He doesn't just catch the ball and shoot it. He might have been the best iso player in the draft and has massive upside. But he is not a consistent catch and shoot player at all right now. Hes more of a project off the ball then Collin Sexton was.

When is this guy going to be a CAV. We have a game in 8 days.

Crazy athleticism. Love his crossover and step back. One thing he has potential is his defense. He even said he wants to be the best defender which is unusual for a guy to say that at his age. Was so ecstatic when he was picked up by us.

I know some of you are very high on KPJ including the Cavs, but I just keep seeing a player like JR Smith who just never get out of the bonehead realm. That said, 30th pick equals JR Smith, you take it, but I feel he will never fully mature.

Can anyone give me an example of a bone head who did mature to become a fringe all star?

The question isn't whether he can de-bonehead. The question is whether he can de-bonehead while he's still a Cav. The light doesn't go on for some boneheads until they're on their 2nd or 3rd team

The thing is, even if he magically wakes up de-bonehead tomorrow, that's just step one of the process. We're talking about a guy who averaged 9.5 points per game in the Pac 12, which was for all intents and purposes a mid-major conference last year. He's got a looooooong way to go to become a useful NBA player. Don't understand how the reward (outside chance of being the next JR Smith) outweighs the risk (throws a wrench in the system we're trying to build and then flames out).

Well, he only played 22 MPG and, truthfully, I think he was extremely hindered by his choice of school. USC is not and hasn't had a good basketball program in many years. What could he have become at a school like Michigan?

His profile shows a lot of efficiency in his game except at the FT line. Even his defensive potential is surprising as well. I wish he would attack the hole more, because he looks really good when attacking.

People say they see Harden, but I think he's more T-Mac-ish with his talent. Maybe even a Donovan Mitchell talent but with a totally different mind set.

He only played 22 MPG and was playing injured for the majority of the games he played. Even in those 22 MPG he was more efficient them Cam Reddish and more productive then Nassir Little. He's one of the youngest players in the draft and noticeably had trouble adjusting to college life. I am not defending what ever he did that got him suspended but when I was 18 I did plenty of stupid shit and I was still in HS.

NBA teams do a ton of work on a kids background and personality before drafting them. Alot of teams passed on him and I get that. I believe in our coaching staff for now we got 2 people used to coaching kids his age in Beilein and Gottlieb(I understand she was a womens coach but she still coached 18 to 22 year olds). I trust in the kid being a class act off court he even mentioned in predraft interviews he wanted to help the community in what ever city drafts him. He has a good head on his shoulders he just has the normal immaturity teenagers have. Once he gets more structure and isn't forced to take classes he doesn't want to he will be fine. I'm more worried about his BBall IQ then him doing stupid shit off the court.

55% of his shot attempts were catch and shoot according to NBAStats. Can't say I watched enough of him to know which of you is right.

Sounds like waiters. He use to drive me crazy with that shit.

I only watched a few of his college games. From what I saw he got his buckets in iso situations. When he was on the floor without the ball he was just lazy and did nothing to get open. If alls we have to do is get him moving when hes off ball that gives us 4 players that can play on or off ball in Sexton, Garland, KPJ, Windler.

I know Beilein said he wants a team with a lot of ball movement so stock piling guys that have potential to excel on and off ball will be key.

Even if you look at it on a per-minute basis, 17 points per 40 on 56% true shooting is really average. The only thing that made him respectable rather than terrible is that he shot 41% from 3, but it's hard to trust it given the small sample size, weak competition, and how poorly he shot from midrange and from the line. I'm seeing JR Smith if the 3-point shot translates, bust if not. Don't get the Harden/TMac talk...that sounds totally wild. Would be like comparing Billy Preston last year to Chis Bosh, just completely different calibers of players.

It looks like NBAStats had their numbers backwards. Had his percentile listed in place of his attempts.
