2019 Draft, Pick #30 - Kevin Porter Jr., USC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He shot in the 30s from deep in High school. Terrible at the line. As for the mechanics let him leave it. Look at Shawn Marion amd a few others. Some times it just looks ugly but even if its bad mechanics or ugly if you get the result you want why fix it?

Work on his FT shooting but for his shooting sometimes trying to fix it backfires. Ask Markelle Fultz.
Thanks!

The one difference I would point out is that Fultz had a nearly perfect release before he got drafted. It's why he was one of the deadliest NCAA pick-and-roll players over the past decade. He had a shoulder injury and changed his shot afterwards.

Just to clarify, you think he will be a good NBA three-point shooter? Thanks for this.

I think if he sticks what he does he can sit between 35-40 percent early in his career. If he tries to force things or they try to correct his shot it may dip. I think he will be competent he won't be Garland or Windler. He can be a Sexton level 3 point shooter. He will be someone I am comfortable with taking a 3 but not necessarily my first choice.

I dont think there is a definite plan yet. Let them play and let it shake out
Yep. The likelihood of KPJ actually working out and becoming starter quality is low. We know what we have in Sexton so far so the idea has to be that we can see Sexton and Garland co-existing in the starting line-up. If KPJ comes along nicely then we reassess.

I'm curious how they knew he would keep sliding. Ballsy to take Windler first. I was totally on board for getting Porter JR in a trade with Miami.

Bobby Marks said how the draft works behinds the scenes. He said there is a league wide conference call and teams actually know who is getting drafted about 2 picks ahead of the tv. He said sometimes Woj get word before hand but they rely on the conference call. He didn't detail it more than that.

It would be interesting if after putting #26 on the conference call that #27-#29 was announced on the call before the Cavs put the card or whatever paperwork they need to for #26. I assume they got the #30 trade call somewhere in that time and it made them switch the pick. I wonder if they switched #26 knowing they had Porter at #30.

I wish Bobby Marks went into more detail of draft from a front office perspective. I want to know the rules or gentleman's agreements that are in place for switch picks and the conference call. It would be interesting what is actually said on the conference call.

This is the thing I think people are forgetting. Sexton has shown he is starter quality for this team. For him to lose his spot, both Garland and Porter will have to beat him out. I just don't see that happening anytime soon. Addition competition is going to drive Sexton even more, thats who he is.

Porter wasn't a starter in college and Garland played 5 games, they have a jump to make which is more than the leap Sexton had to make from college to his rookie season.

Porter could challenge Cedi for his starting spot just as much as he would challenge Sexton. We are probably years away from any of this shaking out. Other draft picks will be thrown into the mix during that time too.

Great individual talent & nasty Harden-esque step-back jumper. Now, can they corral that talent and get him to play within the team concept?

If they can't make him the sixthman. Hes a willing passer at times. But he does play best with the ball in his hands. Hes likely worse then both Sexton and Garland off the ball at this point. But an underrated aspect to his game is defense. No one talks about it because of the splash offensive plays it goes unnoticed but dude puts the clamps down in man to man situations.

This sounds like he should be paired with Delly from day one so he develops properly. Let the coaches give him plays off the ball and if he executes it right, you know Delly is going to reward him and get him the ball. This is a reason why I think it's important to keep Delly for a while. He will be able to help develop players off the bench and make sure the offense is running like the coaching staff expects it to be run.
