It's interesting because his defensive instincts in terms of footwork is actually surprisingly good for a small rookie guard. Usually not only are those guys bullied, they're crossed over and blown by on the regular. Garland is pretty good at staying in front of guys and not biting on crossovers or play-fakes.
Obviously, the flipside is his lack of core strength which leads him to being pushed around and basically driven through. For small guards, Lowry is the master at using his upper body strength to get guys in precarious positions that either lead to scores or fouls or both. He was feasting on both Garland and Sexton, but the Cavs as a team had a great stretch of defense from the start of the 4th quarter basically until Lowry re-entered near the end and Garland was on the floor for that entire stretch.
Again, I see a puppy with big paws. Lowry had a field day doing his Lowry little-man-strength thing, but rarely did you see Garland lose him or anyone else completely, at least on 1-on-1 situations (help defense is a bit of a mess team-wide).
Some of those passes, especially the no-look where he completely fooled Toronto's defense into thinking he was going to the short corner but hit Nance on the roll... Beautiful basketball.
