2019 Series #31 | Indians vs. Tigers | July 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
How is a 31 year old with 2 years of limited previous experience suddenly doing this well?

Its odd right?

It's sometimes easier to look good in limited playing time. Being consistent when you play everyday can expose what you actually are.

The Austin jackson effect.

So essentially is our outfield of the future: Naquin, Mercado, Johnson, Bauers, Zimmer?

I really don’t see how Zimmer fits into the plans here long term. While Mercado makes poor reads in CF on occasion, he still projects long term there. The corner spots should be filled by Johnson, Naquin and Luplow with Allen as an ideal fifth outfielder. Bauers should remain at 1B/DH once Johnson settles in this season or next.

I was so high on Zimmer when he was coming up. It really hurts to write him off.

Where do you put him?

I kind of like the set up of having Naquin being this red hot in front the top of the lineup, especially when Lindor is a run producer being utilized in a leadoff role.

Sort of marginalizes the negatives of batting him in that spot to begin with, but I’m not sure what the best long term strategy is if Naquin continues at this pace.

Good point. If we are going to continue to bat Frankie number one. I like that too. We need runners on when he's batting. I'm not a big fan of Frankie leading off. I prefer him batting number 2.

But if we are going to keep Frankie at one then I'm good with Naquin at 9. I about given up on him, and he's just come back blazing hot. This is big for the team if Naquin is going to give us adequate play at right field.

He's been an extra base machine. 14 doubles and 8 home runs in just 179 at bats. He's filling in the Lonnie Chisenhall role very well.

.825 OPS is actually pretty good. He has a .500 slugging percentage to help bring it up...he has been hitting for some decent power.

Yeah, my bad I was meaning OBP. I know he doesn't walk a lot, so I understand there's some merit to batting so low.

But shit, we are batting Kipnis cleanup, and he's really not producing that great at all. His OBP is .298 which is pretty crap.

I don't get why we're batting Kipnis cleanup over Ramirez. I know Ramirez has had such a down year given his standards. But he's still better than Kipnis. Kipnis is what he is at this point.

Got to bump Ramirez up over him.

This guy is a multiple all-star. He's a year removed from being an MVP contender.

Let him out of the dog house. He's starting to get strides. Kipnis in no way should be getting more at bats over Ramirez.

We might not agree with Tito, but part of where he puts people is how they work a count, part is feel. I am not the expert, but he has moved things around and Jose is hitting better at his current spot and Naquin has hit well in the bottom of the order. Part of me agrees with that. I would like to move Kipnis out of cleanup, but not sure where to put him or move things around without running how some hitters are doing.

By chance, does anyone have 3 or 4 tickets for this Saturday night that they are looking to unload? Thinking of making the 4.5 hour drive this weekend.

Think this is a bit premature writing off Zimmer and penciling in Naquin and Daniel Johnson as long term answers. Zimmer missing such a long, extended time during a critical part of his development is kind of devastating. IF Zimmer can ever stay healthy and IF he can figure out his strikeout issues, I think he has the highest ceiling of any of these guys. Again though, that is a massive if.

Johnson looks very promising and I am high on him, but he is yet to take an MLB AB. Zimmer looked great in AAA before his call up in 2017.

Naquin, for as well as he is playing, is a flawed player who has had his own issues staying on the field for large stretches of time.
