2020-21 Offseason Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think you decline/cut as many options/salaries you can this off-season. The exceptions being Perez (not a bargain but not a ripoff) and Hand. He had one really bad outing and in a really short year. I bank on him to be worthy of his contract in 2021. So the Indians will likely pick it up and trade him. Which means the trade package is really Lindor/Hand, and those are fine 1 year additions to any team. A "salary dump" of Hand alone should net one or two prospects.

Both Frazier and Andujar have a bad reputation with the glove which is why I would try to acquire one of them and make him the DH while moving Reyes to right field. Reyes in right was the plan this year that got derailed when the virus ended spring training and shortened the season. Reyes was a decent right fielder in San Diego and if he is more involved in the game he might hit better.

At age 23 in 2018 Andujar hit .297/.855 with 27 home runs in 573 at-bats. Due to the astonishing emergence of Urshela as an All-Star caliber third baseman with both glove and bat as well as the presence of Giancarlo Stanton at DH, the Yankees have nowhere to play Andujar. We should jump all over this guy, who would fit right in as a DH and could spell Hosey from time to time and let him DH for a day.
Agree.. that Giancarlo Stanton is now fully healthy.. my guess is he returns to a starting spot opposite Aaron Judge as bookend corner OF'ers.. Both of these guys can use their athleticism and prodigious power to play as a full time players.. CF is the spot the Yankees are least happy with..but Aaron Hicks can play when healthy.. and they have Florial waiting in the wings.. Red Thunder, with his adequate/only corner OF glove will remain a man without a spot coming into the 2021 season.. Tauchman and Gardner.. are Yankee depth..

What the NYY's really dislike are two spots.. SS and catcher. We can't help their catching situation.. but, SS.. is another matter.. The NYY's would really like to see Gleyber in a spot he has a chance to play well.. that can only be 2B. Even the NYY's know.. Gleyber is NOT a ML caliber SS.. If not with the Indians for Lindor.. it would not surprise anyone to see the NYY's make a move to fill that spot elsewhere. If a deal with the NYYs for Lindor is going to be done.. Red Thunder will undoubtedly be a part of it.. but, only a part...

IDK what the NYY's are going to do with their catching situation.. sign JT Realmuto?...

W/R to Andujar.. Yes.. following that rookie/break out season a year and a half ago.. he injured his shoulder and had labrum surgery. He worked most of the 2019 season and into the fall to become strong and flexible. IDK if it did any good for him.. Because it was his throwing shoulder & not his lead shoulder for hitting, his swing didn't suffer.... It has to be known Andujar will never be a great defender.. perhaps adequate or average (at any one of two or three spots: LF, 3B, 1B) might be his high water mark.. but, that bat.. was potent.. & can be again. For that and other reasons, he just doesn't have a spot in NY.. but maybe he could in Cleveland?. Maybe an Austin Hedges & a prospect for Andujar trade could be done if there isn't an agreement on Lindor and his value..

Thoughts?..

Hedges definitely adds decent surplus value to a trade. I think I rather keep him for now though. There is literally zero catching depth until you hit A ball so, I think Hedges might be forced to make the best of his opportunities in a Cleveland uniform. Of course his inclusion will not be torpedoing any deal involving Lindor. Catcher is thin, if we trade Hedges and Perez goes down.....

But what if we trade Perez to the Yanks and sign Realmuto? Lol.

Realmuto is going to merit a heavier contract than Perez, so its not likely to happen at all.

We still have Beau Taylor, and I wouldnt be surprised to see Leon (or a player like Leon) on a minor league invite. We also have Kungkuan Giljegiljaw who is a solid recieving catcher.

Otherwise honestly we do lack depth so I am hoping *fingers crossed* we pick up a catching prospect in the lindor trade.

Umm, Stanton’s $25M AAV contract ensures he will be starting. Not even the Yankees can platoon a guy at that salary.

who would think stanton is a platoon guy?.. ridiculous...

Sorry, I misread your earlier comment. I now see you referred to stanton’s return from injury so he returns to the lineup.

Makes a lot of sense. Seems like we should be able to get either Frazier or Andujar. The Yankees may value Hedges because with that lineup they don't need much if any offense from the catcher position. They need a guy who plays great defense and makes their pitchers better.

The Yankees are loaded with right-handed bats. When we played them last week Gardner was the only left-handed hitter in the lineup and he's 37. Neither Frazier or Andujar was playing. They seem to have little use for either of them. They need starting pitching and left-handed hitting. Happ is 37 and Tanaka will be 32 next month. Tanaka is showing his age - his ERA last year was 4.45. He probably threw thousands of innings in Japan before coming here in 2014.

By the way, the Yankees beat Tampa 9-3 in game 1 getting four runs off Blake Snell and five more off their bullpen. Their offense is on fire. First they got to Bieber and now Snell. Frazier started in left and homered off Snell.

Maybe it wasn't that the Indians pitched that bad but rather the Yankees are just getting hot at the right time.

or maybe they just had a better team

Antonetti and Chernoff today -

- tito will be back - not sure about the rest of the staff

- $$$ - the financial reality is daunting

- no decision yet on santana or hand - should be done by eom

- outfield - what you see is what you get

- additions from down below - working with jones on "positional versatility" - somewhat opaque on others

- lindor - uncertain market for both trade and contract

So Lindor's gonna be hard to move and hard to pay. Not a good situation. OTOH guys like Santana, Hand and Hernandez aren't going to be able to get normal FA money, either.

My current thinking is we should aim to add one major league veteran outfielder (preferably can play center) and one major league veteran middle infielder (second or short, could be Hernandez). The rest we can fill in with what we've got.

Renegotiate Santana or just let him see what's what in free agency.

Pick one of Perez or Hedges, trade the other (Yankees could use a good defensive catcher I think).

Wags, I think they'll trade Perez and let Santana, Hand, and Hernandez walk.

A deal with the Yankees makes sense. Lindor and Perez for Frazier, Andujar, and Green. If they Yankees prefer Hedges then that won't stop a deal from happening IMO.

Looks like 1B/OF work for Nolan Jones this offseason. Could be a chance that the #Indians will try to keep Hernandez past this year. Should be interesting.
Jones moving around will be good for him and the Indians. He's not going to unseat Ramirez from 3B, but his bat is needed.

I really like Hernandez's game. It's nothing spectacular, but it's consistent and good. Having said that I don't think he'll be resigned and I have 3 reason off the top of my head why. They are Miller, T. Freeman, and Chang.

Love what Hernandez provided for us this year and would have little objections in bringing him back. The biggest objection is I would rather give that 2B playing time to one of our young players to see what they can provide. Chang is probably the Opening Day SS if Lindor is traded. Freeman- and every other prospect- just missed a full MiLB season and he hasn't played a single AA game so there is little chance he is starting Opening Day. Miller could probably be that guy though.
