2020 NFL Regular Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Fun fact about Raheem Morris.

Despite being in the NFL for eighteen years, he's only actually been a full time defensive coordinator for part of one season and that was the first 5 games of this year before Dan Quinn got fired.

On the surface I agree

But things change FAST in the NFL

2 years ago Wentz and Goff were future top 5 QBs set to be a rivalry atop the NFC for years

Lawrence hasn’t even taken an NFL snap. Burrow and Herbert could easily take a step back like Mayfield did after his rookie year.

As of now the AFC looks in much better position, but there’s a long list of guys who were prematurely annointed after a few seasons that have severely regressed.

That's a fair point. It just seems, as of now going into the next year or two, that the AFC is stockpiled in QB talent while the NFC has Rodgers, Wilson, 43 year old Brady, and not much else.

Another guy the Browns previously interviewed, albeit during Dorsey's sham search when he eventually hired Freddie Kitchens.

Can someone explain to me how the Saints are able to be so far over the cap?

I am assuming you are looking at the 2021 cap. Right now, the contracts they have for next year are way over the cap. It means they will either have to cut or restructure enough contracts to get under the number by the time the 2021 season starts.

I am. How do you restructure to get that far under? In trying find out how we can keep our core while also adding talent. It seems like other teams have always been able to just continually add people.

Agreed I’m basically just hoping some of the young bucks in the AFC flame out or else I agree with you, there’s a giant imbalance of talent at the most important position between the conferences

Restructuring is just the team and the player get together and adjust the contract. We did it last year with Hubbard and Vernon.

Sometimes, a player agrees to a lower salary rather than being cut. Sometimes you add an extra year and spread out the money so that the player makes the same total amount, but has a smaller cap hit. Sometimes you lower the yearly salary (lowering the cap hit) but add more guaranteed money (thus the players makes more in the even he gets cut). There's no one set way, and some teams are more creative. And the player has to be willing to do so.

We're eventually going to lose some good players. Just how the cap works. I think we can keep Myles/Ward/Baker/Chubb and most of the oline. Everyone else might flux. We already let a good LB in Schobert walk.

Rookie scale contracts become very valuable. For example, Wills being a solid LT but on a rookie deal for the next 4 years is a BIG plus.

edit - Also, NO is going to lose some good players this offseason. No way around it.

So with Jarvis & OBJ on higher dollar contracts with 2 & 3 years left respectively (while heading into their 30s); how do you think that plays out financially? Those seem to be the two deals I could see us re-working (if we keep OBJ).

I agree Landry and OBJ are prime restructuring targets. Richardson is one too, although he probably only has 1 more shot at FA so he might be willing to hit the market.

I wonder if we can afford to keep Ogunjobi as well. And Tretter, as great as he's been for us, won't be back after next year.

Do we really want to keep Ogunjobi (unless it's a cheap deal)? He's done a solid job at eating space in the running game but he seems to have regressed from the last two years. Sacks, QB hits, TFL ... all down half of what he produced in '18 and '19. And he wasn't exactly a Pro Bowler in those two years.

I'd love to keep Landry as long as we can. He's been such a culture changer and positive locker room guy.

I agree with Larry O, it comes down to price tag.

Richardson is 30. So even if we keep him around, it’s 1-2 years at most. Elliot obviously could be a starter but we don’t know enough yet.

It’s an interesting question and I don’t know how I feel about it.

A lot can happen over the course of an offseason, but it doesn't appear this relationship between the Texans and Deshaun Watson is salvagable.

To add, Baltimore does have about 26mil in cap space next year, but both Judon and Ngakoue are free agents. Probably can’t sign them both as is, and they’d have trouble doing anything besides keeping Ngakoue if they had to pay Ingram 5mil.
