2020 Trade Deadline Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
king was had for a 6th. That was a huge miss. Even if he left in a year we’d get a compensatory pick and at least have a great slot guy for half a year going into the playoffs.

Are you sure it really was that huge a miss? How could 30 other teams all be so blind as to miss such a wonderful opportunity? Again, something clearly is going on with King that reduced his value from what fans expected. He was a healthy scratch in Sunday's game, and it was "not a team decision". There's something going on with him that dropped his value around the league.

Sendejo sucks. In the guy's defense, he's a 33 year old who was an undrafted free agent, who is best suited as a strong safety. So taking a guy like that and asking him to play FS...it's pretty much a recipe for disaster.

The interesting question is going to be what we do for a FS in 2021. Delpit is going to be coming back from an Achilles. So the question is going to be whether we invest in a starting free safety, or just in a backup? I doubt Delpit's recovery will be far enough along to know whether he can truly return to his former level of athletic performance. I suspect we'll try to sign a starter, and count 2021 as the year for Delpit to round fully back into playing shape. If he progresses well, then we can move one of the two after next season.

Pretty clear he was held out because he was going to be traded.

My most disliked argument of all time. “If nobody else signed/traded for them then was it really worth it?”
This argument can be made for every trade or signing or non trade of all time. I don’t care what other teams do or don’t do. When you have a massive need and the cost is so small. You make that deal.

Pretty clear he was held out because he was going to be traded.

Doesnt' sound like that was the case to me. King was held out of a game last year, week 15. No trade. He had discipline issues both last year and this year, and complained on social media this year about a lack of snaps. That certainly at least suggests there were issues. Sounded like he was just pissed/disruptive/etc..

I'd agree there isn't concrete proof of exactly why he was held out. So it could be because of a trade rather than because of something else, although the NFL isn't like the NBA in terms of holding guys out of games for trades. In fact, as far as I can tell, none of the other guys traded were held out of the game prior to their trade. So why was King the only guy held out?

And then there is the issue of the compensation. With so many people looking at that trade and being convinced that getting King for just a 6th rounder was a steal...why didn't any of the other 30 GM's in the NFL see it the same way? Not a single one of them thought he was worth even a 5th rounder? Why is that?

Just seems to me that there must be more to the story if a guy who is allegedly as good as King goes for that little.

Well, if they're planning on trading a guy they have absolutely zero reason to play him a weekend before the deadline.

If he gets injured you aren't going to be able to deal him.

The exact same logic applies to every other traded player...and none of them were held out. If you have an actual deal, you trade him. If you don't, you play him, then see if you get a deal afterwards.

The only circumstance under which that might not be true is if the team decided "one way or the other, we're going to get rid of this fucker before the deadline, so let's not play him." But in that case, it's the reasons behind the decision to move him no matter what that is the point. Why is a team so willing to give up a guy who supposedly is that good, and why is nobody willing to give up more than a 6th for him?

Also, the compensatory pick logic applies to the Chargers even more than to the Browns. The Chargers aren't flush with cap space for 2021, and are much less likely to be a buyer in free agency. That means they are more likely to be a team that gets compensatory picks. If "former All-Pro" Desmond King is really still that valuable, he'd likely be signed to a nice fat contract next season, which could make him a lot more valuable in terms of a compensatory pick than the paltry 6th rounder they got. So why were the Chargers so clearly desperate to move him?

The "I can't believe we missed out on him" narrative doesn't address any of those questions. There must be a reason neither the Browns nor anyone else was willing to offer more for him.

Come on, you know these guys are just sports athletes who live their lives on the field and have no families or personalities off of it that could influence their team's decision-making. If we as fans don't know of an issue or reason our front office doesn't make the move we so bullishly want, then that issue/reason simply does not exist and our front office is slacking on the job.

I agree that's generally a poor argument. In any auction, someone is going to wind up making the highest bid. Just because nobody else was willing to outbid the winner on the margin doesn't mean the player was not worth what was paid.

But my argument wasn't that he isn't worth a 6th rounder. My argument is that given that's all he was worth, he's probably not nearly as valuable to teams as some are claiming. People are in love with the name, not the player he is today.

He's a slot corner whose play has slipped significantly, was benched, and was clearly a malcontent that his team wanted to ditch. Now perhaps if you're a team whose biggest hole in the defensive backfield is the lack of a slot corner, and you desperately need a starter...he may be a fair risk. You give up a 6th rounder for a rental.

But that's not the Browns. We actually have two guys -- Mitchell and Johnson -- who are best suited to the slot. What we really need are a FS and a true No. 2 corner, and that's not King. And given what happened with the Chargers, you can't bring him here just to be a backup.

So is it worth it to give up a 6th round pick for a half season rental of a guy who may not be able to learn your system and beat out your starter, and who will be a disruptive malcontent if he's benched?

Given the history of Achilles injuries and his recovery timetable, I think you have to go find a starting safety that's a long term solution. IMO, the Browns need to approach it as if Delpit might never be able to become a starter because of this injury. If he gets fully healthy and looks legit, deal with it then. With how bad our safeties are right now, it can't really hurt us.

Mentioned his name in the draft thread, but Paris Ford is a guy I like because he can play both safety spots. If we spend a fairly high pick on a guy like that (or sign one in FA) then there's no real issue once Delpit is healthy.
