2021 53-Man Roster Cut Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
D'Ernest runs a lot more like Hunt & Chubb. He makes a decisive cut and gets yards after contact. He is also valuable on special teams for returning kicks and kick coverage.

I put my money on the Browns keeping all four because of the way they use the running backs. When Chubb was injured, they still split the carries 50/50.

Sometimes I think fans pick the roster they want for Madden instead of the roster the Browns need to run their offense.

This is also not an easy scheme for runningbacks. They have to make decisive actions, read their own line on zone, and read the defense on counter. Johnson already knowing how to do that is hugely important.

I'm pretty gung-ho about replacing Parkey. If/when we strike a deal for Santoso, can Parkey be waived from the IR? I hope I'm not counting my chickens...

Parkey was already placed on IR, so he's not eligible to play for the Browns this year.

Guys can only be designated to return from IR if they're placed on IR after final cuts.

Poking around career field goal percentages.

Parkey has a better career field goal percentage than Phil Dawson.

In all fairness to Nick Harris, he's really a guy who is only capable of playing center and unfortunately for him he's only taken 43 live game reps at C since he's been with the Browns (last week's preseason game at Jacksonville).

He's not a guard, he's never going to be a guard, and I don't think his significant struggles last year playing RG should be held against his potential future at center.

I'm not holding his reps at guard against him. But he played center for two full seasons in college, and scout team center for the Browns all last season, going up against legit NFL players. He's not new to the position. His issue has always been size/strength, and when he failed last year at guard, it wasn't because of mental errors but because he looked like he was on roller skates. But as you said, he's not capable of playing guard, so I'm not holding that against him. The problem is that when he played center last week, he still looked like he was on roller skates.

Point is that the problem doesn't appear to be lack of reps or skill. It just looks to be a lack of functional size/strength. And if that hasn't improved sufficiently since he was drafted nearly 16 months ago, I doubt it is going to improve in the couple of weeks we have until the season begins.

Ehhh. I thought he was better against Jacksonville than you did. Beyond that, I generally don't like making sweeping assumptions based off 43 preseason snaps. PFF graded him positively in that Jaguars game against the pass as well, so it wasn't all horrible.

I guess if there is a silver lining, it's the fact that the Browns have better guard depth than last year. So Harris is presumably not going to play this year unless Tretter goes down. His lack of functional strength may not be a huge issue until next year when they are deciding on whether or not to keep Tretter.

PFF grades against the Giants.

DEFENSIVE END
Joe Jackson: 71.7.
Curtis Weaver: 67.9.
Romeo McKnight: 66.6.
Cameron Malveaux: 60.6.
Notable: Jackson and Weaver each had two pressures.
DEFENSIVE TACKLE
Malik McDowell: 91.7.
Jordan Elliott: 79.3.
Sheldon Day: 64.4.
Andrew Billings: 59.9.
Tommy Togiai: 46.9.
Marvin Wilson: 30.2.
Notable: McDowell had two pressures (one sack, one hit), and graded 83.9 against the run. Elliott had a team-high four pressures, including a sack.
And here's a depth chart:
PositionStarterBackupBubblePractice Squad
LDEGarrett, Myles (lock)McKinley, Takkarist ¯\_(ツ)_/¯Weaver, CurtisMcKnight, Romeo
RDEClowney, Jadeveon (lock)Gustin, PorterMalveaux, CameronJackson, Joe
LDTJackson, Malik (lock?)Elliott, JordanMcDowell, Malik ⇧⇧
RDTBillings, Andrew (΄◞ิ౪◟ิ‵ )Day, SheldonTogiai, Tommy (drafted)Wilson, Marvin ↓ (UDF)

Browns will probably keep 10 of these 15 guys, with Myles and Clowney being the only locks because of talent.

Billings & McKinley both have $3.5 Mil fully guaranteed contracts, so there's no salary savings if they are waived..

If Harris doesn't play this year, then he's not going to have the chance to demonstrate that he's an acceptable replacement for Tretter before we have to make a decision on Tretter. So he has to demonstrate that this season, doesn't he? Otherwise, we'll have to keep Tretter next season as well.

I think fans overrate what they can see and underrate what they can't.

If Harris doesn't play, the fans won't know, but the coaching staff likely still will based off what he shows in practice.

I don't think Harris is gonna make it in this league based off how he looked at center in the preseason game.

How's Harris going to do that though? If healthy, Tretter's going to play every snap in the regular season.

Sometimes you just have to trust that backup OL are ready to step in and be starters without a lot of regular season/playoff game experience since those guys just don't sub like other positions.

Fair point. I'll just say that from what I have seen of him last year, and then this year, he has shown zero signs of overcoming his fundamental flaw as a player, and I'm very skeptical that things are going to change. He has had a full 16 months to work out like a madman and increase his functional strength, and there seems to be zero sign that he has done that.

If I'm a betting man, I'm betting he's not our starting center next year.

2 QB (Mayfield, Keenum)
4 RB (Chubb, Hunt, Johnson, Felton)
1 FB (Janovich)
6 WR (Beckham, Landry, Peoples-Jones, Higgins, Schwartz, Hodge)
3 TE (Hooper, Njoku, Bryant)
9 OL (Wills, Bitonio, Tretter, Teller, Conklin, Hudson, Dunn, Harris, Hubbard)

3 ST (K, P, LS)

9 DL (Garrett, M. Jackson, Billings, Clowney, Gustin, Elliott, Toigai, McKinley, Wilson)
6 LB (Walker, JOK, Smith, Takitaki, Wilson, Lee)
6 CB (Ward, Newsome, Hill, Williams, Green, Jackson)
4 S (Johnson, Harrison, Delpit, LeCounte)

Is my guess.

I like this for the most part but there's no way in hell Marvin Wilson is making this team. He's probably the last DT on the depth chart for now and easily slides onto the PS if the team sees value in developing him.

How serious is Schwartz injury? I don't see much of a place for him early in the season so wonder if it's worth tossing him on the PUP and keeping Stanton as the 4th TE/2nd FB and seeing how shit plays out at RB, WR, and TE.
