2021 NBA Draft Safari

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I don't think he's only a scorer/shooter, though. I think both he and Kuminga were basically playing NCAA tournament level competition for a whole month (along with a 40yrbold Jarrett Jack who is still Jarrett Jack in how he commander the ball unjustifiably) and both showed playmaking on offense and defense that justified their potential #1 for a team projections.

If Green, Kuminga, Todd and Nix were on their own NCAA teams, I feel the first two would be locks for top 3 and the second two would be in that mid/late 1st Rd for sure.

All of their games were sacrificed a little on that select squad.
The Cavs are lacking a wing that has above average tools who could develop into an all star caliber player that is required to be a serious or even partial contender. Green has too much upside to pass up, plain and simple if they are in that position.
Wether he realizes that potential is up to many factors, but after the Porter situation died this( a big time prospect at wing is a must have and not something that they can afford to pass up.

Really hope the Cavs give a long look to Scottie Barnes. He seems like the long term solution to Sexland with his 6-9, 230lbs frame & 7ft2 wing span at 19 years old. Not only would Darius love another big to pass the ball at the rim, but Allen would love to have a bash bro for both O & D rebounds. Lots of times, Allen was getting Double and triple team at the rim, not happening with Barnes.
Barnes offense is raw, but Cleveland has a point guard that does most of work to get his big men easy shots. Add that Barnes has that Sexton Energy to get to the rim
He is the one if the Cavs pick out of the top 5.
Sengun is someone I better not see in a Cavs uniform unless they have a lower pick to do so.

I guess what I'm getting at is, just being 6'6" doesn't magically make him a "wing." He had the same rebound rate and block rate as David Stockton last year :chuckle:. Even if he's not the shortest player on the court, he's going to be, functionally, the smallest player on the court basically whenever he plays. Of course, because of his height, he has potential to become more physical and play more like a wing in the future. But I don't know if it's wise to believe in that potential.

I think there is a reason that a lot of mock drafts still have Jalen Johnson rated highly
Love his tools but has issues like KPJ . Apparently Coach K hurt his feelings by being too tough on him

Jalen Green is a no brainer in the unlikely event he is available for the Cavz . With a frail body he profiles more as a Shooting guard . The ice man George Gervin was pretty thin in his day
As was Tashun Prince.

I like him but not for this team as is, or how they are constructing it, not as a wing anyway, and not right after drafting Okoro.
I don't see them taking him at all really, unless he slides, and they are picking later than hoped.
They can't possibly be that high on any iso dominant guards. Not imo, not higher than 5th anyway.
I think aside from the confrontational headaches, when they moved Kevin Porter, who was the same archetype as Green for nothing, It says a lot about how they could value a similar prospect, who btw seems a bit similar in personality and probably if anything, would target an iso guard with some playmaking ability,a higher level of character, that is less polarizing, later in the draft, like Nah'shon Hyland.I would be fine if they added Green in the lottery, but only if the bigger forwards were gone. Then if they were able to get a high second and steal a big playmaking 6'10" wing like Vrenz Bleijenbergh it would be the optimal outcome after having to settle for a bpa that requires roster shake up

Starting to get more excited about Garuba, especially his defense. His performance in Real Madrid's playoff series against Efes was impressive in a vaccum, but even more impressive now in the context of Efes's Euroleague championship win and their utter annihilation of Sengun's Besiktas team in the Turkish League playoffs. They're 13-2 in their last 15 games, with both losses coming in that series to Real, both among their lowest-scoring games of the season.

Out of all the players Efes faced, Garuba probably did the most to take them out of their rhythm, making several key plays down the stretch in both games.

Last 3:30 of Game 3:

Last 5:00 of Game 4:

Garuba begins the Spanish League playoffs today in a couple hours. With all the other top prospects done for the season, he has a great opportunity to keep making a case for himself. Just to show what makes him special, here are a few plays in the above videos from the Euroleague playoffs that stood out to me.

Here in game 3, Garuba's all alone underneath against 7-foot 260lb center Sanli. Sanli wants to bury the smaller Garuba under the basket and get this offensive rebound. With Real Madrid down 4 with under 2 minutes left in an elimination game, a putback here could be devastating.

Garuba moves his feet nimbly and resists Sanli's attempts to displace him, and he keeps his eyes on the ball all the way from Larkin's hand to the basket.
HLbyY.png

Then he times his jump perfectly and uses every inch of his enormous wingspan to reach out and tap the rebound to his teammate
HLbBS.png

Here he's in a P&R situation guarding Euroleage MVP point guard Micic. After a pair of 3's, Real Madrid now holds a 2-point lead with under a minute left.
HLbFl.png

Micic crosses over and puts on the brakes, trying to get Garuba backpedaling. After shooting 5/5 from deep in Efes's game 2 win, he has another 5 triples in this game, and would love to add his 6th on a game winner.
HLbMG.png

But he can't get quite as much separation as he wants. Wary of Garuba's shot-blocking ability, he passes on the shot and ultimately ends up forcing a pass into traffic, turning it over.
HLbRS.png

Here in game 4, Garuba picks up 5'11" speed demon Larkin way above the 3-point line.
HLc0B.png

Larkin crosses over between his legs, trying to protect the ball and get the step on Garuba. But Garuba is too long and too quick; while keeping his hips in a low, balanced stance, he uses his reach to poke the ball loose.
HLbXz.png

Then he uses his quickness and length again to beat Larkin to the loose ball, earning himself an easy fast-break dunk.
HLc8U.png

...and again against Larkin a couple minutes later. Larkin wants to go 1-on-1 and try to break him down.
HLceZ.png

Garuba yields nothing, bouncing on the balls of his feet and flipping his hips multiple times. Ultimately, with the shot clock running out, Larkin forces a pass to the corner where the shooter steps on the out of bounds line for another turnover.
HLchU.png

HLcgq.png

Finally, in the dying moments of game 4, Real Madrid is nursing a 2-point lead and needs a stop and a defensive rebound.
HLctt.png

Larkin sees his least-favorite man Garuba ready to pick him up if he drives, so he panics and launches an off-balance 3.
HLcuA.png

It's clear that the shot is way off, and there's about to be a free-for-all for this rebound
HLcwC.png

The shot hits the backboard, bounces off a body, and is about to dribble out of bounds
HLcyo.png

But Garuba is able to reach through and get a fingertip on the ball to control it
HLczT.png

He grabs it and is immediately swarmed, in danger of losing the ball or falling out of bounds
HLcBb.png

But Garuba keeps his cool and *just* finds an angle to sneak the ball through to his teammate. Game over.
HLcCX.png

So that's how Garuba won two playoff games with his defense, against the best offensive team in Europe. As I watch more of him, I'm starting to think he's one of the most versatile defensive players I've ever seen.

I really want a 2nd lottery pick for him. Also very okay taking him if we drop below sengun/barnes

Green and Suggs simply aren't happening. It will be Mobley, Kuminga, Cade, Barnes, plan E(dread).

If they project one to be a star then they can absolutely happen regardless of our current roster.

This draft is significantly better than the last few. If Green has all the tools of a star you take him. Period. You figure the rest out later in terms of who to trade and for what.

If the Cavs rule Green out because of fit, this rebuild is going nowhere fast. I will divert all my attention away from the players/roster and towards replacing Koby Altman. A Garland-Green backcourt would fit together beautifully. Would give me shades of the Kyrie-Beal backcourt I lusted over before our pick dropped to #4 in 2012.

Suggs is a little different IMO. I don't think he's as 'cant miss' as Green. I can see a PG-needy team in the lottery looking to jump up for him. If we've missed out on the top tier players by that point and can move down and still grab from that next tier, I can get behind that.
