The Indians and Royals face off for the final time this season with the Indians leading the series 13-3 and amazingly, 7-0 in Kansas City. The Royals have three more chances to avoid the humiliation of going 0-10 at home to the Indians.
The Royals are three games over .500 in the second half of the season while the Tribe is five games under. The Indians have a two-game lead over Detroit for third place.
The Indians are 77-79 and need to win 5 of their last 6 to extend their consecutive streak of finishing over .500 to nine years. A 4-2 finish at least avoids a losing season, although there’s really no difference between 80-82 and 82-80 in my book. I’m just glad they played 162 games rather than 60.
Civale goes against Brady Singer tonight. Singer is 5-10, 4.72. Eight days ago he went 7 innings against the Tribe, allowing 6 hits and 2 runs. Sometimes Singer is very tough - he has seven starts where he went five or more innings and allowed one run or less. But he also has starts where he gets blown up. With eight days since his last start he may be a little wild. He has a big time arm but is inconsistent.
Civale is a year older than Singer but looks ten years older. He’s 11-5 this year but in his four starts since missing 2.5 months with a finger injury his ERA is 7.63. He got lit up by Milwaukee, then threw six shutout innings against the Yankees, then got got hammered by the White Sox in his last start. It looks to me like he needs to have all six pitches, or at least four of them, working perfectly to be effective.
After watching that last game I would advise him to avoid throwing those 90 mph fastballs high in the strike zone. The White Sox treated them like batting practice.
