Well that was a joke. The Tigers scored 16 runs in 14 innings. The bullpen gave up 9 runs in 7 innings. While the Tigers scored 16 runs the Indians got 8 hits in the two games combined and lost a doubleheader at home to the Tigers for the first time in 44 years.
I can't believe how many pitches well out of the strike zone Wily Peralta got the Indians to chase, especially with two strikes. His first name is very appropriate. It was like taking candy from a baby.
Harold Ramirez needs to work on sliding catches. He tried two and both hit his glove and got away. Both were very catchable.
Why do we keep throwing Miggy pitches belt high on the outside corner? Do Indians pitchers enjoy watching him hit home runs to right center? Because that's the only pitch he can still hit out of the park, but we keep throwing to that spot. He has three HR's against the Indians and four against everybody else.
The only bright spot was Bobby Bradley going 4-for-11 with two HR's and a double. He also lined out to right on a ball hit 113 mph. The only bad note was the four strikouts against no walks and he's still chasing too much with two strikes on him. But you can't complain about 17 RBI's in 21 games and a .954 OPS, especially after the Bauer/Chang shit show we saw before Bobby showed up.
I have no idea what Tito was thinking when he let Logan Allen pitch to Eric Haase in the 4th inning with the Tribe trailing 2-1. I'm sure Tito knew that Haase is hitting .306/.986 against LHP's and .187/.678 against RHP's. Nick Sandlin was ready in the bullpen. Right-handed batters are hitting .106 against him. The situation screamed for a pitching change. It was a one-run game.
Tito decided to let Allen pitch to Haase, who promptly hit a 442-foot home run to make it 3-1. Tito brings in Sandlin to face the next hitter, but the damage was done. The decision didn't lose the game since the Tigers added more runs later and the Indians failed to score, but it was still a stupid decision.
I never expected to beat anybody, not even the Tigers at home, with Allen starting. I'm really disappointed in Quantrill. That was a winnable game as the Tribe scored four runs in seven innings. That's two starts in a row Quantrill has been lit up.
One more bright spot - Bradley Zimmer finally got an extra base hit; two in fact. He also made a nice sliding catch to save a run or two. And he got hit for the seventh time in 74 at-bats. Even Brandon Guyer, who was hit 27 times in 440 AB's with the Indians, has to admire that. For his career Guyer was hit once every 15.2 AB's. This year Zimmer is getting hit every 10.6 AB's, which is a big part of his .378 OBP.
If Zimmer can keep getting in the way of pitches and maintain an OBP of over .350 in addition to his range and tremendous arm in the outfield he could hang onto his starting job through the rest of this season. Unfortunately he's striking out in 35.6% of his plate appearances. If only he could learn to bunt. There's no excuse for a left-handed hitter who runs like Usain Bolt not to be able to bunt.
So now it's seven games against the Astros and Rays. This season could look a lot different a week from now, one way or the other.
