2021 Series #24 | Tigers @ Indians | June 28-30, 2021

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
and the next 7 are against Houston and Tampa Bay

Willy Peralta giving the Tigers length and quality. As we embark on the brutal part of our schedule and collapse in the standings, we're going to have to see who is part of the core going forward. So far this season, Bobby Bradley, Amed Rosario and Harold Ramirez have shown real promise as position players who are either new or had little opportunity in the past. We'll need more guys to join them if this season will be salvageable going forward.

Yu Chang should be DFA'd tomorrow. He seems like a really good dude, but he's not a MLB player.

I love the guy and have advocated for him to get a chance. Tomorrow/Today is July 1st.... What's fair is fair. Demote him/cut him. He had a good chance.

Harold might be a worse OF when compared to Franmil. He is bad.

Well that was a joke. The Tigers scored 16 runs in 14 innings. The bullpen gave up 9 runs in 7 innings. While the Tigers scored 16 runs the Indians got 8 hits in the two games combined and lost a doubleheader at home to the Tigers for the first time in 44 years.

I can't believe how many pitches well out of the strike zone Wily Peralta got the Indians to chase, especially with two strikes. His first name is very appropriate. It was like taking candy from a baby.

Harold Ramirez needs to work on sliding catches. He tried two and both hit his glove and got away. Both were very catchable.

Why do we keep throwing Miggy pitches belt high on the outside corner? Do Indians pitchers enjoy watching him hit home runs to right center? Because that's the only pitch he can still hit out of the park, but we keep throwing to that spot. He has three HR's against the Indians and four against everybody else.

The only bright spot was Bobby Bradley going 4-for-11 with two HR's and a double. He also lined out to right on a ball hit 113 mph. The only bad note was the four strikouts against no walks and he's still chasing too much with two strikes on him. But you can't complain about 17 RBI's in 21 games and a .954 OPS, especially after the Bauer/Chang shit show we saw before Bobby showed up.

I have no idea what Tito was thinking when he let Logan Allen pitch to Eric Haase in the 4th inning with the Tribe trailing 2-1. I'm sure Tito knew that Haase is hitting .306/.986 against LHP's and .187/.678 against RHP's. Nick Sandlin was ready in the bullpen. Right-handed batters are hitting .106 against him. The situation screamed for a pitching change. It was a one-run game.

Tito decided to let Allen pitch to Haase, who promptly hit a 442-foot home run to make it 3-1. Tito brings in Sandlin to face the next hitter, but the damage was done. The decision didn't lose the game since the Tigers added more runs later and the Indians failed to score, but it was still a stupid decision.

I never expected to beat anybody, not even the Tigers at home, with Allen starting. I'm really disappointed in Quantrill. That was a winnable game as the Tribe scored four runs in seven innings. That's two starts in a row Quantrill has been lit up.

One more bright spot - Bradley Zimmer finally got an extra base hit; two in fact. He also made a nice sliding catch to save a run or two. And he got hit for the seventh time in 74 at-bats. Even Brandon Guyer, who was hit 27 times in 440 AB's with the Indians, has to admire that. For his career Guyer was hit once every 15.2 AB's. This year Zimmer is getting hit every 10.6 AB's, which is a big part of his .378 OBP.

If Zimmer can keep getting in the way of pitches and maintain an OBP of over .350 in addition to his range and tremendous arm in the outfield he could hang onto his starting job through the rest of this season. Unfortunately he's striking out in 35.6% of his plate appearances. If only he could learn to bunt. There's no excuse for a left-handed hitter who runs like Usain Bolt not to be able to bunt.

So now it's seven games against the Astros and Rays. This season could look a lot different a week from now, one way or the other.

Tito asleep at the wheel, again.

IMO this team has the makings of being quite formidable once everybody is back, maybe the best in the division down the stretch.

However the distance between then and now appears to be way too far to navigate successfully.

I am very optimistic about the group of young starters that are getting hammered right now. If the rotation in Columbus right now was TMac, Mejia, Quantrill, Hentges, and Logan I'm guessing that most of us would be doing handsprings as they mowed down AAA hitters...drooling over the future of our rotation. But like has been demonstrated so often lately by hot AAA hitters getting demolished in their first looks in MLB, there is a bigger than usual gap between the two levels, and our kids (not surprisingly) aren't ready...and aren't able to successfully develop up here while getting their brains beat in.

When you manage or watch a baseball team at any level that is simply too young and inexperienced to compete day in and day out, you have to figure out a way to measure success other than the scoreboard. We may be converting to that kind of situation for the next month or so. This may extend to the rest of the season, if the FO decides to sell off its few veteran assets.

And if the FO decides to switch from contend-while-developing mode to straight development, it should not only sell off some of its veteran assets, but also make room to look at some more kids by getting rid of the dead weight, Chang being one. Id much rather get a longer look at a kid with a possible future, like Clement, Miller, and even Jones, than play Chang.

This team sucks!
Correction: this team needs to get healthy. They’re down Bieber, Plesac, Civale, Berto, Franmil, Naylor, and Jose got hit in the face yesterday. By no means am I saying we’re a World Series contender, but right now, we’re just trying to make ends meet with what we have until most of our guys come back.
