2021 Series #4 | Indians @ White Sox | April 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I very much doubt it. The Mariners just obtained Nola, a bat-first catcher, and probably needed to avoid the temptation of going back to Hedges. :p While I'm sure the Tribe valued Hedges, don't think his inclusion was a deal breaker considering all the other talent involved. I mean, this team was has blithely settled for mediocre back-up catchers for so long that I'd be surprised if they ever re-evaluate their stance on how important they are. I was thrilled beyond belief when they paid up for Hedges though. I consider him well worth it, and much better insurance for Perez than what we've been trotting out there.
Fully agree with you Who. The insurance policy that is Hedges is as close to replicating Berto as can be had IMO. The defense and game calling skills those 2 have is unequaled in the league in my eyes.

Anyone think that Franmil's defense in RF will be any worse than Naylor's has been so far? I'm pulling for Josh, but man he hasn't looked very good on either side of the ball to this point. I think he's pressing a bit, and I hope he finds his grove. If he doesn't then he isn't helping this team at all. Thing is, I feel like he's untouchable for some unknown reason so what we get is what we get with him.

Yeah, I'm going to die on the hill that Naylor's gotta play 1B on the current iteration of this team. He's not a RF, he's just not, and when you can actually trot out a representative RF tandem of Luplow/Daniel Johnson (on both sides of the ball, they have a good chance of being above average) then that's what you'll end up with eventually. If Naylor proves his bat will stick--I think it will, you're skeptical, and have a right to be--then maybe he can play LF in a post Eddie Rosario era, but having Josh playing RF in the current OF arrangement is madness and only undermines the team's strength (pitching).

Do I think Reyes would play as well out there as Naylor? Nope, I do not, especially since 80% of outfield play is just running down fly balls. As poor as Naylor is fundamentally, he'll still do that better than Reyes would. That's not to say I don't find a way to shoehorn Reyes out there at some point in this series. In fact, it's beyond me why Franmil didn't dust off his glove and play some out there after this game was out of hand early to get re-acquainted with the grass.

Good point about getting Reyes out in RF after the game was out of hand.

Naylor can easily instill some faith in me, and he made progress in doing so with a 3 hit night. I don't like him at 1B and I wonder if he can play LF better than he has played RF thus far, but that isn't an option until next season so why I even mention it is beyond me. There's just something about the configuration of this lineup that doesn't give me a warm, fuzzy feeling, but I want to be a believer. I'm a fan and I don't want to be a critic, but something seems off to me. Does that make any sense? It probably is due to a lack of confidence in Naylor and whoever is supposed to be playing CF, and a disdain for Bauers at 1B. I just have to remind myself that it's early and that they'll get it going. Until it isn't of course.

When nobody has ever seen Naylor play first base, which is his natural position, how can they judge him as not able to play it?

Like as has been mentioned before, the reason he was moved off first was because the Padres were looking for a way to get his bat in the lineup, because they already had Myers and Hosmer.

Its kinda like saying you don't like Jones at third base, because they moved him to the outfield to get his bat in the lineup.

Ten hits last night along with some loud outs (like Amed's line drive to third) and some warning track fly balls. The swings didn't look too bad except with RISP when they were 0-for-6. Naylor had hits to left, center, and right but with the bases loaded and two out they got him to swing at a pitch up and in. He flied out to end the inning and the Indians last chance of getting back into the game.

Naylor epitomized the frustration - plenty of hits but not at the right times.

But the Indians rank near the top of baseball in hard hit percentage so the hits will come at some point.

It's a disadvantage for A.L. teams to play in N.L. parks because the A.L. teams lose their DH while the N.L. teams don't lose anything.

Luplow had a HR off a right-handed pitcher. Naylor had three hits. Amed had a home run and lined out to third. Gamel drilled a double to right. The problem was they couldn't string hits together like the Reds did in the 3rd inning when they scored 7 of their 10 runs.

Maybe this is an overreaction to the lack of offense so far but I'd like to see them move Naylor to 1st, put Luplow in right every day, and Amed in center every day. I don't want to see Bauers and Gamel in the lineup any more. I know that screws the defense for a while because Naylor hasn't played first in a long time and Amed hasn't hardly played center at all. But we need some offense. The defense will come around.

I think an outfield of Rosario, Rosario, and Luplow with an infield of Naylor, Hernandez, Gimenez, and Josie will generate enough runs (eventually) to win more games than they lose given the starting pitching and back end of the pen that we have. Bauers and Gamel can be late inning defensive replacements. Chang can pinch hit for Gimenez against a lefty and finish the game at shortstop. He can also give rest days to Josie, Gimenez, and Cesar once the days get hot and the schedule jams up.

For several years, the Tribe has been indicating that they wanted to give Luplow a look as a full time player.

As has been mentioned before, almost everything that is being done to the position playing roster is a result of the fact that the org wants to give Bauers a long look at first base, probably followed by Bradley.

Consider what the roster and lineup would look like if we didn't have either.

Naylor would be at first. Luplow would be in right. Amed would be in center. Johnson would probably be bouncing between right and center.

Our defense would undoubtedly be better, and our offense couldn't have been worse.

"Stringing together hits". That's not, strictly speaking a Skill, is it?
I mean, didn't we see the exclusive effect of pure Chance here, but not really anything frequently repeated or repeatable?

Getting more hits, now that's actually a skill. Where they occur isn't really a matter of choice or strategy.

Stringing hits together with any kind of regularity requires a lineup full of high OBP batters, the definitive 'one thru nine' lineup.

As opposed to waiting for somebody to knock it out of the park.

We have been fairly good at the latter, but below dismal at the former.

Unfortunately, high OBP lineups are much preferable...if the object is to score more runs than the opposition.

One reason to be highly optimistic about the coming wave of prospects.

Ask and you shall receive...

Naylor starting at 1st today.... Reyes is in RF.... Could be an interesting one.

I realize this is last week's thread v White Sox - but - will we be playing tonight? tomorrow night? anyone sknow?
