2022-2023 NBA Regular Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Nikola Jokić had 40 Pts 27 Reb and 10 Ast tonight

He joins Wilt and Elgin Baylor with at least in NBA history with 40 Pts 25 Reb and 10 Ast in a game

And his team still barely beat the NBA-worst Hornets in Denver in a game that went down to the wire. This isn’t the Nuggets year because the team around Jokic isn’t going to be able to get it done. Jokic and Luka are both in sad situations

in case you were afraid of the Lakers becoming good you can set your mind at ease now.

That's the problem when your team isn't even good enough to make the playoffs without an injury-prone superstar (or possibly even with him)
If they were smart they’d clean house. Which means including trading LeBron. I don’t know what NBA team would ever want Davis. He’s just not worth it.

They’re just a game and a half out of the play in, just won two in a row, and their ten-years-ago all-NBA team still puts butts in the seats. They’ll give it some time and hope they can thread the needle with managing to have Davis and Lebron both fully healthy for the playoffs while still winning enough to make it in

They bet on MPJ and Murray. It seems to be burning them. Murray looks like a shell of his former self. MPJ is in and out at critical points and can't really be relied on; his contract is an albatross right now.

MPJ was never going to be a 2way star. His defense was always suspect and his brain is of low quality.

If there was ever a guy to trade in a Sexton style upgrade like we did with Donovan, it was MPJ. I was saying it before when they said he was untouchable. I said, yes he would be untouchable on a max contract when his back injury comes back.

Before he was hurt, they could have had anything that came on the market. I don't always get things right, but I think this was major misstep IMO.

Bones and Murray are the two key players for them. If they can become consistently great scorers, than the Nuggets have a chance.

Weirdly, I actually think you build a team around Jokic like you would build a team around prime LeBron. Outside of having one extra world class. ball-handler (Wade, Kyrie), you want a team that is long, athletic, great defensively, and that can shoot threes really well.

The NBA is so tight this year that I think the Nuggets could, in theory, make a run and win it all. I just do not think that the roster is optimized to win it all with Jokic as the best player.

I don’t see any scenario where the Nuggets beat a healthy Bucks or Celtics squad, and I hope I’m wrong cause I love Jokic

Are there teams that don't want to be long, athletic, great defensively, and shoot threes really well?
Denver plays Bruce Brown, Aaron Gordon, Christian Braun, Bones Hyland, and Jeff Green. All of those guys are average or below average height and length for their position. They shoot the fourth fewest threes in the NBA. They shoot the 19th fewest free throws, allow the third highest eFG%, and force the eighth fewest turnovers.

The problem is that the team they built is not one built around Jokic's skills. It is a team that could work great if they had a few start perimeter initiators and Jokic was just a solid big with good handles and a decent shot.

MPJ getting back should help, but the team is winning because of Jokic, not alongside Jokic. It could work, but I would rather have longer wings that shoot a lot and well, but do not need the ball instead of a team with three guys that are best with the ball alongside Jokic.
