Some of us got mock for asking what wrong with Bieber Velocity, well it was a actual concern by some people n the media, not just us……
THE VELOCITY QUESTION
On May 27, a FanGraphs story asked,
“What’s Going On With Shane Bieber?” It concentrated on his fastball dropping from 92.2 mph in his 2020 Cy Young season to 91.3 mph in 2022.
There was no question, his velocity was down. He was looking for a comfort level after the shoulder injury. He also was changing how he attacked hitters.
“Less curveballs, more cutters, more sliders,” said Bieber. “I’m throwing different pitches to new spots I never tried before.”
It took a while, but Bieber excelled after the All-Star break: 9-3 record with a 2.48 ERA.
“I never paid much attention to the velocity,” said Francona. “Whatever you are pitching at, that’s what you’re pitching at. Don’t try to get a number (on the radar gun) for the sake of a number.”
Francona has watched some pitchers become so fixated on the radar gun speeds, they mess up their motion and lose control of their pitches.
“I’m more concerned about command,” said the manager. “Pitchers can all compete if they have good command. ... Command is a word used less and less in our game and probably needs to be used more.”
Bieber did what he’s always done, dating to high school. He throws strikes. He wins games.
“The goal is to eat up innings, miss bats and give up as few runs as possible,” said Bieber.
Guess who leads the American League in innings pitched this season? It’s
Bieber with 200.
“He’s extremely intelligent,” said Francona. “I realized that from the day he got here. His work between starts is impeccable. He’s an easy kid to root for. And he pitches, he really pitches.”
