Also worth noting that he’s been one of the youngest players in AAA the last two years.

That was one of the reasons I was always so optimistic about Jose Ramirez when he was coming through the system. He was always one of the youngest guys at each level.

Being able to produce at the highest levels while being one of the youngest players isn’t common.

Now that there are no more levels as for him to advance, it wouldn’t be surprising at all to see the kind of improvements @BimboColesHair is talking about.
Not saying he won't improve, just that I'm skeptical of him improving his plate discipline from an average 8% to an above average-great 10-13%

Awhile back Bimbo posted this list of under 21 players to post an .800+ OPS in AAA and the company is good and definitely encouraging for Arias. And while a lot of these guys are still young and some have had little MLB experience, the only one to really noticeably improve his walk rate is Acuna, who may be a bit of an outlier being an MVP caliber hitter when healthy.

Again, not saying it won't happen but from my outside perspective it seems optimistic. Would love to see it happen though because if he can walk at a 10% rate and cut down on the strikeout rate a bit he goes from potentially special to potentially really special.

SSS alert.

In his 9 starts since he's been recalled Arias is posting an .881 OPS over 37 PAs, including a .417 OBP. Posting his typical 20% K rate, but also a 19% BB rate. Has been on base 15 times in those 9 games after only getting on base 3 times his first 6 games earlier in the season.

And this isn't some fluke. He's been posting an .850+ OPS, .400+ OBP slash line since late August between AAA and the MLB with a BB rate at 17% and K rate at 20.4%.

Turned a corner in August as a hitter and seeing success at the MLB level after making that leap is huge for him moving forward.

Don't think the 17% or 19% BB rate is sustainable (obviously) because he likes to swing, but I can absolutely see him settle in around the 10% to 13% range.
If the Gards trade away Amed Arias gets first crack at SS. Let Freeman move around as the utility guy. Arias has too much potential with the glove and bat for the Owen Miller role next year.

I'm sure if you go through that list a number of those guys are already posting ~10% BB rates.

And save for a few of the names, Arias is behind in his development in comparison because he lost a season due to Covid. Most of that list were already at the MLB level in 2020.

So to add to the point Derek made about being one of the youngest hitters in his respective league the past 2 years, he also completely skipped over the AA level and missed a full minor league season. Alt site was nice, but it was not the same as a legit season.

Not shocking to me that he is continuing to improve upon his on-base skills that already took a step last season when his BB rate nearly doubled in 2021 in comparison to what he posted in 2019 in High A ball.

can someone tell me why Ruschmann is considered an expected better placing in ROY than Kwan? It’s not anything statistically, other than 7 more homers

Having the best season catching as a rookie since Piazza in 1993. Only the 5th rookie season in MLB history at C posting 5 or more bWAR. If he's up Opening Day like Kwan and Rodriguez he runs away with the award easily. Elite production for his position offensively and defensively. He's the best C in baseball already, IMO.

What he is doing for his position as a rookie is special. The other 4 names he joins as the only rookie Cs to post 5+ bWAR their rookie seasons? Johnny Bench, Thurman Munson, Carlton Fisk, and the aforementioned Piazza.

It's going to go Rodriguez followed by Rutschman then Kwan.

What's the SSS, did somebody pin him to being nothing good or something?

The only SSS I know is shit, shower, shave

Excluding Arias, only 4 of 17 (Acuna, Kieboom, Urias, and Lux) have MLB walk rates over 10%. Kieboom, Lux, and Urias all walked at a 10.6-11.9% range across their minor league career and walked 12.2-13.9% in AAA.

Based off of his minor league numbers, I think Riley Greene should be able to hit 10% and maybe Alek Thomas whose walk rate has dipped dramatically at the MLB level so far.

Acuna is the only one of the 17 to post a better walk rate in their major league career than in his minor league career

Arias ranks 13/18 in career minor league walk rate and 13/18 in career AAA walk rate

I'd love to see the dramatic walk rate increase and will be happy to eat crow on it, but it still just seems optimistic to me. We will see.

As I mentioned in my prior post, my 2nd season with QST and I still couldn't be happier. Always email updates, ton of great perks and other types of events, they make you feel welcome and appreciated.. are you planning to go to the STH event that's... next week I think?
Unfortunately I can’t because of work but that is an awesome perk! I’m hoping to attend if I renew next season!

It seems like 2022 was an outstanding year for rookies. Some years you really have to search for ROY candidates. Not this year.
Rodriguez, Rutschman, Kwan, Witt Jr., and others have had outstanding debuts. Good thing. Because the game needs more young stars. The G's success with rookies has been historic.

Just a fluke? Or something more. The Scout, Draft, Sign, Develop process has been around forever,
My question to all you development guru's out there: Has anything changed? Have schools like Driveline made a difference? Economic pressures?
