Seems fairly logical, but I have no idea what they're going to do. I don't prefer Miller at 1B, but I like his bat. If they're calling Naylor up then I'd guess he's the RFer which means Mercado's playing time is going to consist of the short side of a platoon........again. I guess he can spell at 3 guys which would give him more AB. Not that I'm concerned with Mercado, but I am wondering how the pieces fit.

To me Mercado is the 4th OF, platoon at RF with Naylor vs lefties and gives Kwan and Straw time off as well... He could also be a pinch runner for Reyes, Hedges etc as well...

Meanwhile Oscar Mercado is doing his best Oscar Gonzalez impression with the bat...

I wouldn't be surprised if at some point we see Miller in the outfield.

He is a MIF by trade, athletically able to play all four inf positions. He has plus speed. As I mentioned before, he reminds me of Casey Blake, although a lot younger than Blake when he got to the Bigs.

Blake was a heck of an athlete...All State in three sports in high school...but not as fast at age 30 as Miller is now. Miller played three sports in HS, too.

While Miller began at SS, Blake was basically a 3B who moonlighted a bit at short.

IMO the key to where Miller ends up playing is what the org does at 1B, now and in the future...and the most likely options are in the outfield. He, like Blake, could end up playing wherever the hole in the lineup is....or he could get 500 at bats filling in everywhere.

Blake averaged about 2.5 fWAR for us, but that wasn't his biggest asset, which was the ability to cover up the weakest link in our lineup.

Do you think the “bookends” in this photo wet their pants at this moment?

At least in the long term I'd rather see Miller in OF / Naylor at 1B than vice versa, but short term the opposite makes more sense I guess. And you could probably swap Naylor's name for Jones as well.

Good post CATS. I fully agree. He has the athletic ability to cover just about every position other than P and C. I'm not saying he's great at any position, but he capable. In other words, as you say he can float to wherever he's needed.

That does create a question or 2 in my mind. If that is indeed the case and Miller becomes somewhat of a super utility, what does that mean for Mercado, Clement, Chang, and Bradley. Of those 4, Clement is the only one I'd hate to see get demoted.

Miller I think will eventually play some OF, but I think they will focus on him as an utility INF for the most part...

I dont see Chang and Bradley on the team for the entire season.

I see Miller playing almost every day, but not at any one position. Right now he will play 1B and 2B, but he could end up playing both COFs, too.
