2022 Game #1 | #2 Ohio State vs. #5 Notre Dame | September 3rd, 2022 @ 7:30 PM EST

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I liked what I saw. They out physical'd notre dame which had to be the priority after the way last year finished. I don't see anyway there isn't a drop off in the passing game after losing Olave and Wilson. We should be a run first team anyway with these backs. When we establish the run, we can force them to put more in the box and then hit deep plays. Note Dame was keeping their safeties deep so just keep chunking them on the ground. We should have ran even more

I also think opposing teams defenses are real aware of Day and Stroud's tendencies. Day likes to call a pass heavy game and it takes alot for him to break from that. Stroud doesn't like to run even if he has room and never takes the ball on the option.

Day's offense has cut out alot of the misdirection stuff that was there when Urban was HC. It's really an offense that is about talent beating out the opposing team and doesn't take advantage of trying to confuse the opposing defense.

I do hope this will get Day to make the team more balance and maybe threat of the run can help open up the passing game. I also do think they can add more elements to the offense to be more creative. I'm not sure this offense has expanded or even evolved since Day has taken over as HC. To me the offense has gotten simpler each year and I think is a reason why the team doesn't look good when going against a similar talent team.

Aaron that you?

I don’t recognize a damn thing down there. The Stube and Library are about all from my time. I’m not sure if Out R Inn is still around or not.

Out R Inn is still there. Ethyl has been around for a little bit I think.

Little Bar. The Library. That's about it.

Yeah we don't use qb runs anymore. I think with this year's team Day needs to be really committed to running first and using the run to open up the pass. Think the running game really is going to be stronger than the passing game this year. There's a significant drop off from Wilson and Olave to Harrison and Flemming and EE. Not a knock on the new guys but last year's WRs were all time great.

I've been thinking about the defensive performance from last night a little more. I have to say the more I think about it the more impressed I am. OSU gave up 10 points last night. 10! Both of those scoring drives by ND had big plays that led to scores.

Field goal drive to open the game:
54 yard completion to open the game. Not great. 15 yard roughing passer tacked on to the end of the play. Not ideal at all. 1st and goal at the 16.
Defense proceeds to give up a 3 yard run to the 13. Stuffs the next run for -2. 3&9 play is a 1 yard run. Result of the drive a 33 yard field goal. Solid stand after the big play.

Touchdown drive.
ND starts at their own 13. They pick up a 1st down to move the chains. Defense forces a 3rd and 2 on the next set of downs. Pass down the sideline looks to be falling incomplete but Matt Salerno makes a tremendous catch on his back for 31 yards and a first down. ND scores their only touchdown 5 plays later.

Two scoring drives had big plays totally 85 total yards. ND had 253 the entire night INCLUDING those 85 yards mentioned above. 2 plays 85 yards. Rest of the night...46 plays, 168 combined yards. ND was 3-13 (23%) on 3rd down compared to 7-13 (54%) for OSU. ND picked up 12 first downs on the night compared to 22 for OSU. They also only had 76 yards rushing on the night on 30 carries. 2.5 yards per rush.

If this is a taste of what the defense is capable of, the Knowles hire is going to be a real good one. As previously mentioned in the game thread I live 20 minutes from the golden dome and ND has issues they need to work through. I do expect their offense to improve throughout the year as they have a new starting QB, a new coach in his 2nd game at the helm, etc. So the OSU defense wasn't facing the greatest show on turf by any means. But I am pleasantly surprised to start the year. Good start.

Back 7 had 6 guys basically play the whole game (Eichenberg, Burke, Brown, Hickman, Ransom and Mcallister) with Cody Simon and Steele Chambers getting basically equal reps at the other LB spot. 3LBs was only used once, and that was the goaline TD for ND. Josh Proctor started, but was yanked after he missed the tackle on the opening play and Ransom played basically the whole way.

A lot of rotating on the DL, which was expected.

Ok, Day didn’t call a great game, but Stroud’s refusal to run on the option needs to change. I remember a pregame interview, maybe Penn State?, and he was all “I will run over anyone” and he just doesn’t. He doesn’t like getting hit, never keeps on the option, which is kind of a staple play for this offense since Meyer arrived.
Like take Barrett. Dude had limitations. He wasn’t Pryor and he wasn’t Fields, but he would rumble. He got the most out of what he had.
Stroud has the tools, but if you can’t keep on 3rd and short, enough w the brave talk.

I excuse his passing game. Not a problem. We lost 2 first rounders, and those dudes helped JSN just victimize fools last year. JSN will grow, obviously he got hurt, but the QB has to find a way sometime.

Day didn’t run enough. But he did when it counted.

The defense was so fucking encouraging. I have high hopes that we can actually improve there. I love this DC. Tackling was meh, but that’ll come with time and players getting to that read and react speed.

We definitely didn’t look like the 2nd best team in the nation, but we have seen these young men catch a wave as they get coached up. Overall, that was a very fun opener and after getting obliterated by Michigan, which we deserved, I am overall very pleased w the toughness. We will need that to get where we want to go.
