2022 Minor League Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
@DickyLeftridge

If the Gold Glove came out today, Kwan would win it in LF and Straw would win it in CF. Straw would be in contention for the Platinum glove...

Benson has jumped up this season cause of his improved bat and honestly deserves a spotlight on it. He still has a long ways to go and does not have the same fielding skill in CF as Straw, but majority of league doesn't either.

Benson has played 30 games in CF this season, more than he has played at any other position. Might need to update your views on these two players. You seem to be pulling from datasets for Benson and Straw that are a couple of years old at this point.
No way.

Benson has started 30 games in center and 37 in the corners. This is the same discussion we had about Daniel Johnson, when posters insisted he was a plus defensive CF, when he wasn't even playing CF in the minors.

Going into this season, Straw was a 2.9 fWAR player over a full season of 600 PAs.

Last season, his first as a full time regular, he put up 3.4 fWAR in 638 PAs.

If you throw in his miserable first half, he has been a 2.7 fWAR player over 600 PAs.

If he continues to non produce, he will be a 2 WAR player this season on his defense and base running alone.

But in case nobody has noticed, Straw has begun to hit and get on base.

All players go through a high and low and Straw is in a low right now.

On paper we may have jumped to quick to give him an extension since guys like Brennan have come out pretty much saying, screw you evaluators, I deserve to be a top 100 prospect, but if Straw gets past this low and starts hitting like he was, he is a candidate for a Platinum glove plus is a legit 1/9 type in the lineup...

Let me do the nicknames around here bubs. Just cringey at this point. SMH. My offer as to Myles Straw is on the last page. Still waiting on any takers.

In the spirit of getting this thread back on the topic, what do you do with Jhonathan Rodriguez? About as hot as any player we have. Very exciting prospect when he was drafted in the 3rd Round in 2017. At 22.5 he's still just in High A. Does he have a chance or is just org filler at this point?

This does not equate to being ready to play CF in the big leagues.

Hope his offense is for real, but its not realistic to expect a team to abandon one of the premier defensive players in the league.

I hate some are ignoring the fact Myles is a career .250 hitter OBP .330. Not great, but not bad for a premier defender at a premium position.

We extended him, he plays ++defense, and is a decent hitter normally. Jose is going through a slump, should we trade him?

I am with you on defending Myles, he isnt going anywhere nor should he. He will work through the slump.

You aren't understanding what he meant...

Straw is the best defensive CF in baseball right now... so he still deserves to be on this team because of that.

Whether we like it or not, Straw has a really long leash because of that contract extension.

None of us are happy with his performance with a bat, but we are dealing with it because we have to...

I mean there isn't better for speed, stealing bases etc around the league. He still has a good BB rate and SO rate...

WE ARE STUCK WITH STRAW... So deal with it.

Next when it comes to Benson, we all like the guy, but his stats don't support making him our next Saint... Though none of us we have any issues if he was brought up to the big league club...
Nobody here has the means to do anything but discuss possibilities and happenings. I really like what the organization has done as a whole, but that doesn’t mean I have to agree on everything. One of the happenings/developments I don’t like is Straw and his meager offense having locked down CF.

Admittedly, I’m a talent nut. Especially when that talent has good upside and 4-5 tool ability. Straw isn’t that, but you’re right in saying he’s the best defensive CFer in the game. It comes down to the having balance idea again. He’s no different than Hedges other than he’s faster while Hedges has more power. Both are incredibly boring to watch at the plate and bring very little offensive value. I’ll take a decent defending CFer with a consistently good bat over the best defensive CFer in the game. In other words, give me Kwan in CF over Straw everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. Conversely, I down like being pinned down with a DH that can’t play the field either, but that’s another story.

I'll tell you all this. If Straw turns it around and hits anywhere close to .260 this year, I'll come right on in here and congratulate him and say that I called it wrong. I have no problem with that. It's not about clinging to my prior bad takes with me. So who among the horde of folks in this thread will promise the same if Straw continues to perform at the current level the rest of the season? Who is going to come in here and own the fact that he sucks, I've told you he sucks, and you swore up and down he didn't in fact suck? Any takers?

I'll wait.

The problem with this is the qualifications being used to define "suck" vary from poster to poster.

Your version of sucking is a guy who isn't hitting, now clearly, at least .260 and most likely getting on base ~40% of the time and MASHING monster dongs like Gianna Michaels.

However, that is not everyone else's definition of sucking. Understanding that you have to get 27 outs to win a game, people don't think he sucks regardless of what he does at the dish because he, quite clearly, helps his team get 27 outs from his CF position and does so at an elite level.

So no. You don't have an open offer. Just move along man.

He isn't going anywhere this season. That's the reality of the situation from a baseball playing standpoint, farm system standpoint, and outside the field/agent relationship standpoint for the front office.

No use to keep spending all this time talking about getting rid of him, sending him down, or flat out benching him. It's not going to happen this year in 2022. Revisit this down the line in 2023 if he continues to provide nothing at the plate.

At least so far...

If we as a group continue to be so right/correct.. it's only a matter of time before CleFO gets our phone #'s and begs for advice !!..

Thoughts?..

I dont think the FO jumped the gun on extending Straw on an extremely team friendly contract that carries thru his entire prime.

He has a contract that averages $5 mil...if we don't pick up his options. If we do, it ends up being about $4.5 mil over the five years.

At age 31, KC is paying Taylor $4.5 per year for two years, but he isnt close to being as good as Straw.

If all Straw does is play elite defense and provide above average base running, he is well worth what he is getting paid. If he provides any offense (OBP), its a major bonus. Since his OBP going into this season, covering parts of four years, was .342, the contract is a safe bet.

Straw isn’t going anywhere, but how do they get some of these guys opportunities? I’m not arguing that any prospect would or wouldn’t be a better option. The question is how do they find out? I don’t want to watch any prospect produce better for another team than what this organization chose to keep. That is a distinct possibility in the case of Myles Straw.

In my attempt to be realistic I don’t think Myles is as bad as he is performing right now nor as good as he was in the 2nd half of last season. What gives.
